PSP - Image 1

March 13, 2007 - After all the rumors and speculation, a Sony exec has finally gone on record to say that a redesigned version of Sony's PSP handheld is in the works.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, SCE UK managing director Ray Maguire told an invited audience of press, teachers and education specialists at the national launch of Sony's PSP in Education initiative that the current PSP is just the "first iteration", and that a "smaller, lighter" system will be introduced in the future.

Maguire also said that any redesigns would not affect the PSP's screen, which is apparently "fixed." Judging by Sony's track record of cutting the size and cost of their redesigned consoles since the PSOne was first introduced, a redesigned PSP could also presumably carry a lower price tag.

Following Maguire's statement, a Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that apart from firmware updates, no "immediate changes" are currently planned for the PSP. "In the longest term, of course we are always looking at ways to continue our platform development," said the spokesperson, "and this normal business practice is what Ray was referring to."

UPDATE (May 15, 2007): We were informed by QJ reader whoelse about a report at PSPGen regarding the "lighter and smaller PSP" allegedly in the works. Apparently, French magazine - The Official Guide of the PSP, has picked up this piece of info causing a bit of resurgence in this rumor.

As of now, there's still no new and official information about the "PSP Light" from the Sony camp. As always we will keep you posted about this matter, but for now, feel free to check out the PSPGen report complete with magazine scans and have your trusty Babelfish and Google Translate ready if you don't understand French.

Oopss almost forgot...the new PSP can't play game on bed coz it'll have a small d*ck like battery as weak as u n yr dad's black d*ck n gonna be torturing for yr mom.

» Of course it will be compatible with UMD's

What kind of a dumb question is that?

Of course this PSP redesign will have a UMD drive, it's a PSP redesign, not a PSP2.

And of course Sony will continue to attempt to make it homebrew-proof (which will eventually be cracked).

   Re: axelixc - 2007-03-13
 » It's not dump doG

it's not a question. It's a hope. Sony has yet to confirm any umd hardware means what u r saying just baseless rumors for the moment.

So there is no proof that current umds will be 100% compatible. Take a look at PS3 since Sony had it backward compatibility but what turned out was PS3 has backward compatibility problem.

   Re: Hyperbolic (Unregistered) - 2007-03-13
 » WTF

So you're saying that they'll make an update to an older console, which is now the PSP, and not make it play all UMD's? When they released the PS1 redesign did they restrict any PS1 games? When they released the PS2 redesign did they restrict any PS2 games? Both Playstation redesigns also came with the same CD/DVD drives. Even the DS Lite came with the same flashcart reader. Listen to what you're saying, you sound like an idiot.

personally, i don't know how sony could redesign the psp to be thinner without it feeling too flimsy. the current psp is good enough for me. no, unless sony releases a psp2 in the future, i would go for that. a redesign is for those of you who a) don't have a psp yet or b) can't handle yourself and must have the latest thing. the only reason i would get a redesign is if it had a second analog nub, and it probably won't

It's clearly an attempt to revive and breathe some new life into the handheld. Its clearly getting walloped by the DS and perhaps a redesign will attract more buyers that wouldn't have given it a second look. This is only a good thing to us. More people with a PSP means more support and thus more games and features.

   Re: .. (Unregistered) - 2007-03-13
 » ..

No. The PSP is getting beaten but not "walloped". It's actually a big hit in Korea (w/e). It also seems to be rising in NA. I think the new redesign, with the lower price tag, is going to kill the NDS. Presuming they make good games of course...

I think they just need to fix the problems that the system has. For one, the screen is horribly impossible to view in daylight, which makes it a horrible handheld device. The nub could be redesigned, and the +pad should be tightened. I'd buy it if only they made the screen more visible. I think they should make it a clamshell design so they can keep the screen the same size and protect it at the same time, they should put a better d-pad on it, fix the nub, give it better battery life, incorporate the functions of the remote into the psp itself to make the mp3 player more logical, add flash memory (at least 8 gigs) get rid of the umd door and make it slide into the unit, give it better speakers and louder volume, and give it a brighter screen so I can see it when it's beight outside or in the room.

» actually, there may be a psp2 eventually

seriously, we can't discount the idea of a psp2. After all, remember when the atari came out? We were like, whoa! A computer game!!! Later on, the NES came out, and we were like, "OMG! GOOD GRAPHICS!!!". Then came the SNES, and we were like, "OMG, even better Graphics!!!". Then the N64, and we were like, "STFU, we've got @%#@ 3D graphics!!!", then the PS came out, and we thought that the graphics couldn't get any better (admit it, you all thought the ps1 was undefeatable). Oh, yeah, and when the GB came out, we were all like, omg, a handheld came with, get this: Cartridges!!!. Then, came the gamegear, and we were like OMG, color graphics on a handheld!!! Then, later on came the GBA, and we were like, WTF, that's really good graphics, and a HUUUUUUGGGGGEEEEEE screen!!!! So, yeah, like 15 years after we finished OMGing the previous technology, we saw the PSP, and we were like, no way!!! A gigantic screen? WITH 3D GRAPHICS??? AND A "CD" DRIVE (yeah, UMDs are technically mini-DVDs with a weird caddy)? WITH graphics that surpass the PS1?!! So, yeah, at this rate, in about 5 years, don't be surprised when the PS4 is introduced, (along side the "Nintendo ya-hoo!!!" and heXagon-Box 720), and the PSP2 is introduced with the ability to play PS2 level graphics.... So, yeah, get the point? Technically, many people said that the X-Box's graphics would not be surpassable, yet the 360 came out. And, even now, people are claiming that the PS3 has shown us the height of 3D graphics, yet, MARK MY WORDS: (as long as the world is not destroyed, and humankind still exists, etc. and sony is not sued out of existence,) there WILL be a PS4 or at least a more powerful competitor that makes a better system. Lol, I'm thinking Apple should join in, they seem to have gained a zombie-like crowd with their inferior computers and way-too-expensive ipods. Not that I'm saying that I hate expensive products, I mean I'll be honest: I think that the PSP is an overpriced piece of euro-$hit, but I'll admit that my PSP's graphics are superior to that of any competitor's (and let's face it, the ds is the only competitor we have; the gizmodos and gp32s are not common enough). However, I'll also admit that I really want to get a DS for their more fun games (and it doesn't hurt that the DS's touch screen is freakin' awesome, too). Wow, this is a very long comment. Feel free to comment on my myspace account at myspace.com/teh_g33k Preferably, under the psp blog. COOl, and thanks in advance for any flames/comments sent to me. OH, and please do tell me if any data I wrote was false or inaccurate, thanks.

 » PSP2... eventually.

The psp2 will eventually come, but I don't see it coming anytime soon. The psp is still doing well.
The DS was too big, the dslite fixed that.
The PSP doesnt need to be smaller, and theres no real problems with it. No need for a redesign here.

   Re: evilscarycomputergeek (Unregistered) - 2007-03-14
 » replies

actually, I have a quick statement: until the days of the ps3, I used to support PCs (and their superior abilities). Unfortunately, I've read somewhere that the ps3's cell processor[s] are able to make the ps3 compete with a "supercomputer", so technically wouldn't that mean that even crysis can't keep up? But, just to make sure I'm not sounding noobish, yes, it is possible that a weaker CPU paired up with an uberpowerful video card can still bring in better graphics. BTW, about this "psp-lite" that we are gossiping about, I think that a clamshell design would be excellent: Same screen size, same case size, but better button placement, and maybe, just maybe, an extra 2 buttons (perhaps some games can be made like those dual shock controllers made for the ps1, you know, the newer generation could be 100% compatible with 2 shoulder pads, but able to take advantage of the 2 extra buttons. Hey, dark alex might even make a firmware hack for our ps1 emulator to take advantage of the extra buttons). But seriously, the clamshell design sounds like a really good idea, and it would still keep the psp at the same size, i think. The only problem: having your pspee snapped in half by a younger sibling/ an angry parent.
