It would seem that Sony's had plans of coming out with a UMD-less PSP all along. According to Sony's product planning division head honcho, Naoya Matsui, "We'd planned to release a PSP model without a UMD drive since the very beginning."Further elaborating on this statement, "But if we'd simply release the hardware, there wouldn't have been much for everyone to enjoy," he said in an interview with Japanese site GameBusiness. "We needed to prepare the right environment for it first - things like the transferral (sic) of content with the PS3 and PSN, and PC software to manage content like music and movies such as Media Go." Of course, they had to wait first until digital content is at a competitive playing field with physical media, and now the time is right. The PSP Go will simultaneously launch in the US and Europe on October 1, while Japan will get it a month later. Related PSP Go Articles:

This company has had their had up their ass for like 5 years now. Don't get me wrong, I have a ps3, ps2, ps1 and psp, but I've always had the idea in the back of my head that these guys have NO idea what theyre doing.
Maybe they'll straighten out by the time the PS4 comes out, otherwise I'll be going microsoft.
(assuming they fix their own problems with hardware)

Most of the hardware issues are planned ahead, that way they can get cash out of people who violate their warranty and have to buy a new consoles or whatnot.
I'm pretty sure they didn't want the RROD to get as out of hand as it has though.

I wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to switch to Microsoft, i mean Sony's hardware is usually better quality but they just don't have the first clue how to run a gaming platform, but because Microsoft is mainly a software brand they know how to deal with developers and customers, where Sony just wants to sell hardware, if Microsoft brought out a gaming handheld i'd buy it tomorrow and happily give up my Psp.

» Obviously not the plan from the beginning...
It's painfully obvious that the plan was NOT to have a UMD-less PSP from the beginning otherwise why not just release that PSP from the beginning, this is more corporate BS plain and simple. They are doing this to combat piracy, even though the problem is ALOT less or a problem then they want to publicly admit. This way their profit margins go up and the consumers sees none of those savings they get from a all digital distribution scheme.

I think you're absolutely on the ball on this.
Not only is the UMD-less PSP terribly overpriced (in the US, but especially in Europe), but even the digital downloads are way too expensive when you consider that the biggest cost is putting in a physical container like a UMD.
By going this way, Sony is not only ripping off consumers for the above reasons, but they're also betraying retailers that have been offering their stuff for all these years because they won't see any profits of digital downloads, since buying vouchers in a shop won't be very successful IMO.

I could definitely see the voucher thing taking off...
What about those consumers who are too young for a credit card?
Mom and/or Dad can buy the voucher at Gamestop and the kid could use that voucher to download that game at home.
And there is of course a person like me who doesn't overly enjoy using a credit card/debit card to purchase anything.
I find the fact that not having a physical representation of my money makes me buy too many things in a short amount of time and thus run out of money faster than normal.
Or there is the person who is working under the table or the person who doesn't own a credit card.
Why do you think used game shops exist?

you fail horribly... they are not doing this to combat piracy, are you kidding me? downloadable content is just as easy to hack/crack as hard copy content..we've seen it countless times already, dvd's, blu-rays, all forms of PC encryption have been cracked..
and mabey its painfully obvious for you young padawen, that a umd-less psp was not planend from the beginning. however multi-billion dollar companies do not waste R+D on releasing things wihout a reason.. UMD was the right format at the time, its not anymore.. they OBVIOUSLY knew that this would be the case when they released the original PSP.. ***** that to me is PAINFULLY OBVIOUS.
and what company have you ever heard of dropping prices when demand is high?
ever hear of supply and demand? ***** take economics 101 in your next high school year.. you may learn something..

It's been the plan since the Psp was first hacked, so that's not quite the beginning, it was just the realisation of a rubbish format.

» Logic would say later than that.
They would have to become aware that piracy was wide spread enough to be hurting their profits. That would take a little while, anywhere from 2-6 months, for that community to build. But, its hard to believe that they develop the UMD just to float the system for a few years and then phase it out. Or it could have really been a crutch to get to Digital Distro. Anyone know if a UMD is basically a small DVD or something totally different?

umd is a small form factor dvd.. just like the nintendo gamecube.. it uses its own flavour of compression.. however no different than any old dvd laser.. hence why developing it was NOT that big of a deal...

» SONY ...Not One Shread of Truth
It was not the plan! BS! They merely want to act like they are in control... they are not! Yes SONY you purposely made the UMD format because you knew it would fail so that we could all see that digital downloading is the way of the future. Is that how it works? They lied about the 2000, the 3000, and the GO... we are talking about an supremely arrogant company whom has seen its best days. SONY is out of touch and three steps behind the competition. Not doubt about it. Just as we all knew the GO was coming... we all know SONY is in decline. They don't give the consumers what they want... they think they can control our desires... and now they're paying for it. I love the PSP... but even now I don't have a keyboard, a cam higher than 2.5 megapixs, an official US GPS... and the list goes on... SONY is ran by idiots. The coolest thing about SONY is the aesthetics... these things look cool... but only moderate to low end in tech.

it would be quite stupid to stop making umds when the majority of psp owners own a psp that uses UMDS!
and everyone is in decline, it's a recession, stupid.

You guys are pure IDIOTS!!
Just because YOU want something included in the PSP does not make it legitimate and a reason to bash sony.
common its a dam gaming console. if i want a phone ill use my cellphone, if i want a GPS ill use my dam GPS.. if i want a camera ILL USE A F&CKIN CAMERA.
and the UMD DID NOT FAIL. it was developed as it was the RIGHT FORMAT at the RIGHT TIME.
and for those of you who say the UMD is the reason the PSP is so widely hacked, NO. its not the UMD, its the system itself to blame and its lax security.
***** were talking about a glorified PS1 in a compact form...not exactly ground breaking...
fak i dont know why i even bother posting here as im sure all you nooblets are just going to argue your idiotic points anyways...
you fail... so horribly you will never even know...
and now darkpigen.. your comment as well as others here, make you look like a tool..

If you want to carry around a phone, gaming device, camera, gps, video player then go back to the 80's and people will agree with you, but back in the modern world we expect our devices to have multiple functions.

He wasn't saying anything about the size of the thing, he was saying a gaming device doesn't need those things because it's just for gaming, but by that logic my cell phone only needs to make phone calls and all the other features are just superfluous, the simple fact is Sony just doesn't make the most of it's devices with both software and hardware, i mean hell... Even the DSI has 2 camera's on it.

i want my psp go to kiss me to sleep every night after reading me a bed time story and play umds for me on my old psp.
the psp does what it was exactly meant to do and enough. if you want something more, go buy an iphone.

» Ya, Right Sony
Ya, Right Sony, now is the perfect time. After everybody has purchased a butt load of games for the psp, now is the time to make them re-purchase them all over again, for the same damn system (just a different model).
What he meant to say was it has been our plan all along to screw everyone of our customers of the PSP.
