SCEJ - future firmware updates will focus on PS3 and PSP interaction - Image 1PS3 and PSP connectivity has always been a priority to Sony, and it looks like they have some pretty exciting plans for the two platforms in future firmware updates.

One of those plans include having the PSP use some of the PS3's processing power. Says SCEJ's Matsui:

In future updates, there are thoughts of raising the level of interaction, in the sense of “interactive entertainment”.

Among those ideas are enabling the PSP to cope with more processing while using computational resources on the PS3 side for areas where the PSP lacks resources, so we think that interaction between the two systems will be possible by having them successfully complement each other .

Don't know how they can actually make practical use of this though, considering that the PSP is primarily a portable console. If you're stuck connected to the PS3 to use its processing power, it defeats the whole purpose of getting a handheld.

Matsui adds that future firmware updates of the PS3 will add more services. They won't necessarily be about gaming either, despite Kaz Hirai's strong words about video games being the PS3's main premise. Says Matsui:

In addition, as with Life with PlayStation, we take the approach of making the PS3 something people will use from when they wake up, like switching it on to watch the news in the morning.

Since we believe that there must still be many areas in with both the PS3 and PSP can be of use in people’s daily lives, we want to continue to make firmware updates with this perspective in mind.

thinks this is crap, and doesn't belong on the PS3/PSP (console in genral actually), BUT i think this is nice, really, the idea with console is that you can have "everything" without having to buy new parts over and over, like with PC's, and thus makes gaming-consoles alot more interesting when about such features!!

i might have explained it in a weird way, and if i have, ask of me to re-tell! ;)

 » I love PSP/PS3 inter-conectivity

I loved it with GBA/Cube I love it even more now.

I wish more games would use PSP. I wish Sony would put that PSP-Plus (use Dualshock to control PSP) in the firmware. I wish they'd add the ability to convert any movie to PSP (PSX had this)

I'd kill for a PS3 Silent Scope to use PSP as the scope mounted on a Guncon3

 » All i want is

Sony put up the patch that allow us to play the PSP using a DualShock3/SixAxis. Of course you would need a Ps3 for this, but still, i want it so bad for fighting games.

PSP is the best system I've ever owned

   Re: beastlie23 - 2008-10-25
» no you are denied *****

it is only good for when you take a dump and you can stick your homebrew up your arse who wants to play half arsed games from old consoles

   Re: Datnizzle - 2008-10-25
 » I do!!

I love playing Mario World, Donkey Kong, Turtles in Time, Sonic Collection, and Golden Axe. Calling these games "half-arsed" would be incorrect.

 » you must..

you must be one of those guys who prefer graphics over game play. or maybe you cant beat or play the old games so you rage about how bad they are. to be honest the psp inst just a gaming console its also counts as so much more because of the homebrew scene. maybe you don't appreciate the work and effort of the psp devs as much as we do,but hey what do you know you're just a "OH*****ZZLOOKSATZTHOSEZZGRAPHICSZZZZ" kid.

» Some rambling on future of PSP/PS3 connectivity

That would actually be a pretty fun world to live in...

"I woke up to my PSP alarm clock function. When I turned it off, my PS3 automatically turned on and displayed my PSBulletin which gave me an update on current news in my area and todays weather. A tap of my PSP and my favorite tunes start to play from the PS3. As I head to work, my PSP plays mp3's over my car staireo. When I get to work, My PSP links to my PS3 over the internet and displays a mobile version of PSBulletin. During my brakes I can watch a play a quick game or make a Skype phone call. I'll post some memo's on my PSbulletin to remember to buy some milk...And tonight, The gaming starts, after chilling with my HOMEie's for a bit, that is.(PS HOME reference for daft people who missed it.)"

So.. Anyone else like to synchronize their lives with the Sony. I truthfully can't see this happening until the PSP gets some kind of cell service and can stay connected to the PS3 all day long. But hey, we have heard rumors of a PSP Phone. So some cool things can come of that idea and PS3/PSP connectivity.

RAMBLING OVER!

 » hmm

I would like to see them update both firmwares so that those of us with the chotto shot can do chat remotely. I mean the features are already in both systems. How hard could it be to transmit the psp's cam video image to the ps3? also upgraded wifi would be a nice asset. Also when is the psp gonna get used as rear view mirrors in racing games? when I saw that on the E3 video 2 years ago, I went out and got my 2nd and 3rd psp's. That's alot of coin to spend on the theoretical features that were supposed to be implemented by now. Seriously I would like to have that interactivity. aslo the psp plus stand alone mode. that would be SICK and would rival Ninty and Xsux. It would be something they would not have.

This would be a dream come true, just like an hour ago when I got to sit in a delorean for the first time in my life.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2008-10-24
 » Funny thing is...

The game they showed it on released without the feature (rear view mirror)....how wacked is that...

I welcome any interconnectivity they can get.....also don't think you need to be wired to your PS3 to use any of these features (like extra processing power) Since the PSP connects to the PS3 through WiFi, any features they introduce could theoretically be used over the internet....like they do video streaming now...

   Re: Miclowgunman - 2008-10-26
 » delorean!!!

I feel the love! I sat in a delorean five years ago and it has been my dream to own one ever since!

 » I'd like...

I'd like Trophies on PSP. I think it can happen... it should. The PSP would actually have me playing more if it had Trophies.

   by Datnizzle - 2008-10-25
 » I just want...

My PS3 to automatically encode my vids for the PSP when I transfer them. There is no reason to have a movie 1000 pixels wide on the PSP. Scaling it down as it transfers would be great, it would save lots of room on my memstick.

 » Truthfully,

Even though I think it's a good thing they're trying to do all this stuff with connectivity, what Sony needs to do is make so that with the PSP connected to the PS3 you can play Ad-Hoc PSP games against anyone else also connected to the PS3.

Most other people don't care about PSP/PS3 connectivity and that would actually get some more people to buy it(PS3.) The PSP has so many more sales than the PS3 does, so why think connectivity really matters that much? What Sony needs to do is throw around a little cash, so they can have a few good companies make games exclusively for their systems. If the PS3 and PSP get enough "good" exclusive games over the other systems, then people will end up jumping ship and more systems and games will be sold.

I think the games should be first and foremost for a video game console. Because that's why we bought it in the first place. For video games. After they do well in the games department then they can add all this interconnectivity and all this other BS. But right now what's it matter when less people are going to buy the systems because "A," just about everything on the PS3 can be found on the 360 and even then more exlusives can be found on the 360, and "B," while an amazing system and does come out with alot of pretty good games, the PSP has less support than the DS does altogether and pretty much the least support of any system in the current gen.

Please get your priorities straight, Sony. Get some support for the main reason people buy a system then make all these firmware updates.
