Well now here's something definitely interesting. Tipster bitwreck sent this in; he just sniffed out a patent that was filed by Sony Japan. But... what is it?
I was just talking to Justin B. about this, and he points out that the illustrations here remind him of an old concept image for the PSP, as seen here. Note the button layout. And indeed, the patent was filed back in 2005 (before the very first PSP was introduced), so what we're seeing now could actually be a concept patent for the PSP-1000, theoretically making this PSP here a PSP 0 of sorts. Well, you can check the Via link for the full patent document, complete with hifaluting patenting jargon. But here's some things we can piece together:
Many thanks to bitwreck for sending us the tip and extracting the pics for us! You rock, man! Related articles:

uhhh dude, those are button. They seem to be there in place on the shoulder and trigger buttons which as you can see arent there. to me this shows that it is DEF a pre-psp 1000 concept because of the sheer fact it doesnt even have shoulder buttons.

wonder if it will even have analogs or buttons i would think sony would use touch buttons like the one for turning off and on you ps3 for psp2

M y head hurts, too much buttons again and again.
i want only 2 stick and four movement buttons on left and four buttons on the right, plus 2-4 buttons on the back, i hate touch screen, slide is better, if right stick could be into a roll-over ball. start button, no select button, home button instead, mic included, 2 small speaker on front and 1 med or big 1 in the back. no disc but memory card is better, i like the M2 (memory stick 2), the power and hold is some what inside the psp2, behind the slide screen. no wlan switch (always on), now on the iside of the game, make it like the new DSI, or maybe the same xmb from the psp, less setting as in automatic ad-hoc, infustrate and time. i wonder if the screen can be HD??? have a psp2 2 psp2 talk thru a internet or a cell phone provider. tv, webcam and lots more, that i can think of.
well my head is ok from typing this, does your head hurt for reading this?

Your asking for too much -
3 speakers? Come on.
Do you expect to fit all of that into less than 1lbs?
Remember, this is a PORTABLE device. Something you carry in your pocket.

If you check the image in the previous qj article, you'll notice that the concept psp definitely was based on this image.
So I guess it's the PSP 0

A patent does not mean the device actually exists. Wait until you get a filing with the FCC - that'll mean it's actually being made.
