Sony brand manager for the PSP, John Koller, recently spoke his mind about Nintendo's new DS upgrade: the DSi. Gizmodo was able to ask Koller about his reaction to the DSi, and as it turns out, he does have some positive remarks (but at the same time still somehow manages to take a potshot at the DS' "12 and under" demographic). Here's the full quote: Nintendo has kind of a history of these [moderate] kinds of updates, and even with DS Lite, there was a lot of discussion, "Is that enough?" And they seemed to do pretty well there. I can see the DSi being successful. The DS lite was obviously very successful. Will DSi do well with [the DS's] demographic? It probably will. Will it be a product that expands their user base [beyond] under 12? I'm not sure. While no one can argue with that (well, it's his opinion, anyways - everyone's entitled to their own), it's interesting to hear him talk of "moderate kinds of updates" in the DS lifespan. Can anyone dare say the same thing of the PSP? Anyone? None? After all, when the PSP-3000 was announced, I heard comments that went something like "brighter screen, microphone, that's it?!" There's Koller underestimating the competition again. Does he ever get tired of running his mouth?

The majority of the gaming market already owns a DS. Why bother buying the same system AGAIN when you can get what the DSi is offering plus be able to play another games system?
On a few major sites they talk of the homebrew capabilities. Since Nintendo removed the GBA slot and all GBA compatability, that means that emulators for the GBA now need to be ported to the DS.
So here's what I say for those who own a DS or DS Lite, which most interested in the DSi probably already do. Buy a PSP, GP2X, or the upcoming Pandora.

» Also. As for the DSi camera.
"For cell phones and digital cameras, manufacturers have been increasing the number of pixels in order to appeal to consumers. However, we have taken almost the opposite approach. We cannot boast about the resolution as the camera for DSi has the 300,000 pixels resolution"
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/conference2008fall/presen/e/02.html
Not even one mega pixel. Terrible quality.

» I dont want to outright call this guy an idiot..
So, i will just say that he is deluded.
Given the sales of the current generation of the DS Lite, how can he suggest that ALL of that marketshare went primarily to the under 12 demographic? Im 36. I own both systems and can say without apology that my DS gets ALOT more playtime.
And, it's not because of the games. The DS offers everything from cooking tutorials, personal organizers, language tutors, brain trainers, exercise software, travel guides, and of course GAMES!
Just in the month of October alone, the DS will receive over 80 games! That is more games than the psp got for the entire year of 2008. I didnt even bother to count the 40+ games that were released last month(sept).
Now, that the DSi is being released, it will offer a guy like me(targeted demographic(17+) even more functionality with it's more powerful internet and cameras for my handsfree videoconferencing needs. Oh yeah and im sure the games are going to be as creative as ever!
.....So, this is how the PSP dies, with thunderous applause.

» Powerful internet and camera?
Read my above post please.
Also, you've never used Opera DS? Because of the DS hardware, the internet is slow as hell. I mean honestly. You'll have internet and a LESS THAN ONE MEGAPIXEL CAMERA for your conferencing needs.
I doubt you own a PSP because if you did, you wouldn't be praising on how the system is dying. I mean seriously you seem too much of a Nintendo fanboy from your entire statement.
Let me let you in a little hint. Even though the DS is going to have 80 releases in the month of October, it really doesn't help when only about two of them are going to be any good. On the other hand. The PSP only has 16 games being released this week in which three look to be good games.
Let's not get into the fact that the DS is well known for companies pushing out tons of games a year just to make a quick buck on the retarded fanbase.
Personally I'm glad that the PSP doesn't have as many game releases as the DS does. You don't have to wade through all that crap to find a solid title and the system rarely ever has a game that actually sucks. All the games pushed onto the system are atleast playable.

» I kinda like it...
But my iPhone does what the DSi does, only better. In terms of playtime, my DS sits unloved for the most part, simply because a hacked PSP means I can play PSP Revolution and Rakugaki Showtime, which trumps anything Nintendo could throw my way.
I do enjoy Mario Kart and The World Ends With You, but there are more PSP games that float my boat. Each to their own I guess ^_^

Your iPhone can play Nintendo DS games? Your iPhone has 2 screens? Even though the DSi is new, it doesn't mean you have to ignore all of the basic facts that the old DS had, which the DSi will have (except for GameBoy Advance games.)

I love my PSP but my DS definately gets more play time. Don't misunderstand what I am saying but I just don't think there have been very many good games recently on the PSP that have made a lasting impression, or added any kind of innovation to their games.
I am 27 years old and to say that only 12 year old kids play DS games is just ignorant. Now mind you, I am sure half the games on the DS were not made for "adults", it doesn't mean we don't enjoy them, regardless.
Sony's biggest problem is that they just think that their sh*t doesn't stink. I'm sorry but nintendo can make a good game without having to cramp everything with blood and gore. Get over it. Some of us enjoy fun colorful games too, and I don't mean some lame excuse of a puzzle game.

» agree.

» AGAIN, I have BOTH systems and the DS is the better of the 2.
To reiterate,
The opera system on the NEW DSi is made to be more powerful and faster than the current DS lite due to it's addition of ram and updated network functionality. The touchscreen browsing on the ds completely owns the 'dial-a-pad' interface on the psp. As for game quality, I would much rather wade through 50-80+ games a MONTH, than to wade through 30+ mediocre-good games a YEAR.
I have faithfully supported the PSP since it's inception. The only game that is even worth ME keeping the system so far has been Monster Hunter. The market in Japan can attest that as this game single handedly sold the system at some point. A system cannot just stand on one solid game. The DS has MANY solid games as well as solid applications that actually improve my lifestyle as well.
Btw, any idiot 15 year old sony fanboy who is, 'glad that the PSP doesn't have as many game releases as the DS does!!' is as naive, as he is stupid. Period.

» Alright.
So you don't think the 70+ absolute *****ty games that the DS has each month is kindof mindless? Haven't you ever heard the term, "quality over quantity."
While the PSP doesn't have nearly as much a quantity of games as the DS has, it definitely stacks up against the DS when it comes to quality. With the PSP most every game you buy is going to be good, rather tahn taking that hit and miss chance with the DS.
So you end up saying you've faithfully supported the PSP and the only game worth keeping the system for is Monster Hunter. Either you just like overhyped repetitive games or you really haven't tried many games on the PSP at all.
How about Mega Man Powered Up, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles, Gundam Battle Royale, Gundam Battle Chronicle, Gundam Battle Universe, Wild ARMs XF, Brave Story, Jeanne D'Arc, Silent Hill Origins, GTA LCS, GTA VCS, Driver '76, Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron, Wipeout Pure, Wipeout Pulse, Gurumin, Syphon Filter Dark Mirror, DJ Max Portable, Star Ocean First Departure, Star Ocean Second Evolution, etc.
There are plenty of games on the PSP definitely worth in keeping the system. I could easily list more. It also helps that all of the games that I've listed are better than the majority of DS titles. Don't get me wrong though, the DS does have quite a few amazing titles such as Feel the Magic, Contact, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker, but majority of the good titles can't compare to the majority of the PSP's good titles. Even alot of the average PSP games are just as good as some of the better DS titles.
For the record. Phantasy Star Portable > Monster Hunter. Atleast when it comes to repetitive grinding based games. Phantasy Star feels like you're actually progressing rather than slowly crawling your way through the game.

» kupomogli, those games...
Those games you listed are mostly... questionable.
Let me count my list of games that are actually B and up: Dracula X Chronicles, MHF 1/2, all Metal Gears (even the Acids) and maybe the Gran Turismo LIE (I'm still hurt...), I'm not a FF7 fanboy so easy breezy Crises Core is out and the FF Tactics port is riddled with slowdown, both GTAs are boring as hell, but while I'm not a God of War fan, I respect it's well deserved fanbase and quality. Everything else is either crap, average, or trumped by a better DS game.
You mentioned 3 DS games, but forgot anything with Mario in it's title (they're cash-ins, but they're good cash-ins), the 2 Advance Wars, current Final Fantasy spinoffs and remakes, Elite Beat Agents, Wario Ware Touched, the DS Castlevanias, the Trauma Centers, Hotel Dusk, the plentiful rpgs, and really just too many other games to count. The only edge the PSP has is with action titles (more power + more gameplay options) and DS/PSP multiplatform titles (which are typically mediocre anyways).
In another post you also stated that the DS will only have a .3 megapixel camera, but you forgot there's 2 cameras, the one on the outside having 3 megapixels. Enjoy your brighter 3000 screen.

Good job! You just named every single PSP game available!
And are all of those games great? No! Barely half of those games would appeal to anybody. Next time, get your facts straight before you try to defend your boring PSP which will break if you drop it 1 inch onto a pillow.

Hes kinda right I mean I own a DS lite but havent played it since I bought it LOL (dont get me wrong the DS does its job right). Yes the DS is also a kids toy and an adult gaming system while the PSP is for mature people. all my little cuzins own a Ds and my friends. when my friends saw my psp with CFW they bought a psp and were amazed . sure the ds has more games but 75 % is for girls/kids/just plain cr@P. the ds is a great system and sells but its not better than psp. just because it sells doesnt mean its better. its like buying a HD tv
and a SD tv in average people would buy the sd tv because they dont see the point in HD. I like my ds becuase my mario games :)

» hmm.
Well, PSP got "moderate" updates too, I won't lie. PSP-2000 = slimmer, extra OS features, more RAM, etc. Kind of a big and needed update.
PSP-3000 = built in mic, better screen...and something else that I forgot. That's moderate.
But yeah, Koller knows that lots of people above 12 have a DS, but hardly ANY of the games appeal to anyone above 12-14. Seriously, my DS has been collecting dust for a long while. I don't have anything against Nintendo since I loved playing my GBA SP, but the DS is just full of repetitive kiddie games. Not my cup of tea.
Can't say any different for my PSP, while it has a lot more games that appeal to me and I've bought them, it has also been collecting dust lately. We need more games that aren't ports, damn it!
