Sony's Pro-HG memory stick - Image 1

Sony announced the other day that development of the much-talked about memory stick PRO-HG Duo is now in full swing and will become available in authorized dealers and online retail store SonyStyle.com across North America starting August of this year. This hasn't been mentioned in a long time so let us refresh your memories about this particular memory stick (Pun not intended).

Sony's Memory Stick PRO-HG media is capable of recording times and data transmission and is three times faster than the standard Memory Stick Duo products. This is because of its 8-bit parallel interface and the flash memory device. The addition of four more connector pins results data transfer of up to 30MB/s (240 Mbps) megabytes per second.

But if for some other reason you still want to use just four connectors, PRO-HG Duo media is also capable of that but take note that the minimum write speed of 15 megabits per second will be employed. Quite curiously, the new memory stick features copyright protection technology MagicGate that provides security to commercial content like digital music and downloaded movies.

In relation to this, Sony will also be releasing
Memory Stick Duo ExpressCard adaptor. This is for personal computers with an ExpressCard slot - mostly familiar in the 2007 line up of VAIO computers. How fast will this make the data transfer, you ask? Well, let's just say that you can transfer one hour of personal video to your computers in around two minutes from a regular memory stick handy cam.

Memory Stick PRO-HG media is also available in three different capacities: 1GB (US$ 60), 2GB (US$ 90), and 4GB (US$ 150).

Can anyone tell me why do we need 240 Mbps for the PSP...?
Kinda useless IMO, unless you're downloading large files...on the PC.

   Re: GODzillaSDM (Unregistered) - 2007-04-26
 » 240 isn't that fast

240Mbps is only 30MB/s which isn't really crazy fast. If you have a movie file (600MB), it will still take 20 seconds to write. (assuming 30MB/s is write speed. The article only said transfer speed, and did not specify whether it is write or read.)

Still 30MB/s is faster than the current write actual speeds of around 7MB/s

Lol I don't think having this would make a difference cuz I have crappy USB 1.1, it's REALLY slow.

   Re: J (Unregistered) - 2007-04-27
 » @GODzillaSDM

i THINK it refers to write speed bcos when you read your not actually transferring any file, where as, when your writing you obviously are.

   Re: Snarg (Unregistered) - 2007-04-27
 » .

J - It could still refer to read, if it's reading the file on the memory card while transfering it elsewhere.

 » Not on psp

youll never get th HG speeds on the psp cause its memery stick port only has 4 connectors and does not support HG only regular pro duo. to get those speeds you need a compatible card interfac like a card reader or the VAIO port he mentioned

When it rans it pours. This may seem like a
nobrainer to you but what you fail to relalise is
while yes it has 4 connectors we will not see that
speed increase on the PSPs but it will still
interface with the PSP and you will still be able to
access the full storage capacity of the 32GB's.
You may need a firmware update to do so but
you will still be able to use it.

 » 32gb PRO-HG

Wicked Insider is right about the PSP being able to handle the new card when it gets released. What I don't understand is why alot of you seem to have problems wrapping your heads around it. It's only obvious that the PRO-HG whether it be 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, all the way to 32GB PRO-HG Duo sticks will work on the PSP hence yet another reason why it's posted here. GOD some of you are so dumb while the rest understand whats going on and can't wait for the 32GB stick to arrive.

 » it doesnt matter

the psp can only read 7 mb/s so the point of this card in the psp wont matter itll read and write the same speed...on other compatible electronics it will work faster...so getting this aint no different than any other 4 gb card...

Upgrade your PSP to Sony's 3.40 firmware and throw it out the window. That will solve your problem.

its either brad here is an advertisement bot or he just doesn't speak/type english natively.

about the topic, the psp will not benefit from this 4gb HG MS. we are awaiting the 16gb and the 32gb versions because we care more on capacity bleh. and i'll also use those high capacity MS as a drive to contain my flash windows xp, my PC will boot really fast that way!

How fast can the PSP actually read and write to a memory stick? If it can't even utilize the capabilities of this new stick why did it even get posted?

   Re: Jupp3 (Unregistered) - 2007-04-27
 » utilizing the speed

Of course when you're going to write big files, you can always remove the memory card from PSP and plug it into a USB2.0 memory card reader, that supports HG. Of course it isn't nice that you have to disconnect the card every time (which can wear the connectors), but at least you can get some advantage over a normal "slow" card.

But at least in my opinion, it isn't worth it.
by article sucks again... (Unregistered) - 2007-04-26
» once again another article with half the facts.

Isn't this a PSP news forum????

so does it work on PSP or not ???

I'd say not, if it has extra pins then it will need more than just a firmware update to get the full speeds.

If it's backwards compatable then just buy a normal memory stick for your PSP at half the price.

   Re: asd (Unregistered) - 2007-04-26
 » Jesus people...

Wicked Insider is correct on this one, just because it has more pins doen't mean the PSP can't read it. the extra pins are for newer equipment that can utilize the card to it's fullest read write capacity. The PSP will be able to use this card to it's fullest storage capasity but not it's read write capacity. I find it errogent of some of you that others spell it out yet ya'll keep skirting the facts laided out and confuse the others with you incoherent IF's. Some of the people here that post really do know what they are talking about but the facts get lost due to the uninformed making assumtions.

Wicked Insider talks about a 32Gb stick the article only mentions : "Memory Stick PRO-HG media is also available in three different capacities: 1GB (US$ 60), 2GB (US$ 90), and 4GB (US$ 150)."

I already have a working 4Gb card, so as I said before - the article is not very clear when it comes to talking about the new format and how it relates to PSP users.

Extra pins, means the PSP will not support it.
Yes it might be able to use the new Pro-HG 4Gb at normal speeds, but we already have existing memory sticks with this capacity/speed.

from engadget.com "Instead of making gimicky cards that have speed no one can use with their current devices, why not make an 8gb card for $60"

Re: Jauffre (registered but too lazy to sign in) (Unregistered) - 2007-04-28
» do you ppl seriously not read??

"But if for some other reason you still want to use just four connectors, PRO-HG Duo media is also capable of that but take note that the minimum write speed of 15 megabits per second will be employed."

"30MB/s is faster than the current write actual speeds of around 7MB/s"

Therefore the new cards will be faster by 8MB/s even if you dont want to upgrade the PSPs connectors. This is great news for the PSP, you just have to read how it improves it.

Your a tard, Wicked Insider was talking about a 32gb stick yes and there is no such thing as a 32gb stick outside of Pro-HG so your a moron that doesn't know how to read or think! Good going, you just showed off how stupid you reall are. His post was right on the mark even though you couldn't understand the plain logic in which he was explaining it. There is no gimmick your dyslexic, aliterate and ADHD so stop trying and just give up.

 » hmmm.

OK. Correct me please if/when I'm wrong. I have a sandisk ultra II 4gb. It has the minimum sustained write speed of 9 mb/s and read speed of 10 mb/s. I don't think it requires more pins...

Also, the sandisk extreme III has a sustained read/write speed of 18 mb/s. SO.... The psp has a hardware block on it so that it cannot go higher then 7 mb/s? or is it just the extra pins required for the HG and the psp can function faster?

Re: Chump Again (Unregistered) - 2007-04-27
 » 7MB/s rumor

I've heard this 7MB/s figure twice so far. If this is true, then it seems that the SanDisk Ultra II is the best one to go with (10MB/s bi-directional if I remember correctly).
