Despite coming out at the bottom of the consoles' sales charts, Sony remains optimistic that PS3 and PSP sales will pick up in the coming months, according to their latest financial report. Perhaps this has anything to do with the hardware redesigns coming to E3? That remains to be seen.

For 12 months ending March 31st, 2009, Sony shipped 14.1 million PSPs and 10.1 million PS3s. For the next fiscal period, Sony predicts 15 million for the PSP, and 13 million for the PS3. Packaged software unit sales picked up just a little bit to 240 million from 237.7 from last year. Sales via the PlayStation Store, however, are expected to do far better with thrice as many as the previous year's.

If the rumored Go! PSP and the Slim PS3 indeed come out within the fiscal year, then Sony will have new cards on the table that may up the sales in their favor. A UMD-less Go! PSP would definitely up PS Store sales, perhaps reaching their lucrative target, but I don't know about the Slim PS3 though.

New hardware aside, both the PS3 and PSP have very solid lineups for 2009. For instance, the PSP lineup includes LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, and the North American release of Dissidia. For the PS3, it's God of War III and Uncharted II, among others. So even if Sony doesn't whip out new hardware, I think they've got a pretty good gameplan to reach those numbers.
