John Koller - Image 1Sony's senior marketing manager John Koller recently spoke at a panel on casual gaming at a Wedbush Morgan conference. He let slip that there will be a couple of new peripherals for the PlayStation Portable such as a keyboard and GPS unit. He also gave word that they have a new target market for the handheld.

Koller said that we can expect a new keyboard for the unit which will be "launching in the next 12 months." In addition, he also announced that a GPS unit will be coming up and will allow PSP users to get "better experience than you get on portable GPS systems."

The talk then turned to the possibility of porting the Japan PSP TV tuner to the U.S. He said that the TV tuners released there weren't compatible with North America's infrastructure, however, they are looking into a "wide variety of other uses."

Moving on, he discussed the shift in the PSP's audience. He noted that they first targeted 28 to 34 year old professionals, however, over time the demograph shifted to a younger and multi-ethnic audience.

With both points in mind, Koller said that "the expansion of PSP is going to continue" and that "it's going to be a very big growth area." It might be interesting to see if this projected growth will occur.

 » Couldn't agree more...

I'm Angelo, project leader of Unofficial piKey 0.4.

piKey is still a great application and 0.5 is in the making!

After doing some research on this it appears the a USB type keyboard for the PSP is a deffinante no.

The only other option is SIO. (The headphone port.) There is actually an official SIO driver in the PSP's firmware. Check out the PSPSDK docs.

It's even come to the point were Targus ha STOPPED producing IR keyboards!

The piKey project made them rich!

I hate it when Sony argue the the PSP homebrew scene affects Sony's profits in a negative way.

Due to the scene we have bought:

- More PSP's. Most of my friends got a PSP BECAUSE of homebrew.

- More batteries. Pandora!

- More memory cards.

- More external hardware.

So why the hell is Sony complaining! Hail homebrew!

 » Let's just say

Let's just say that the next release has many surprises.

However (because I'm such a perfectionist) we will only release till we feel it's perfect.

School has also been busy, so finding time hasn't been too easy.

I love PiKey, I do. But, I upgraded from fat to slim, so an official keyboard release is all I got.

 » "Upgrade"

Well if you call upgrading, waiting for Sony to s***** feed you software and hardware that has been implemented already through the homebrew community, then what kind of Upgrade is the slim at all?

Please don't leave out all the better sides comparing it to the fat, that's just silly. Are you forgetting the brighter screen? 64 RAM, load times Battery life, the obvious slimmer/lighter? Come on, the PSP is great, but you can't say there's no upgrade from the fat to the slim.

Also, Sony isn't s***** feeding me anything. This is ONE thing, everything else, homebrew is available for.

But I suppose you can tell me since I can't control my TV the Slim isn't worthy either, eh?
