KarrakerIn case you are not aware, Sony has a new guy manning the senior director post of their corporate communications. He's Dave Karraker and while he isn't new to the game industry, he never expected he'll eventually end up where he is now considering his background. He actually started out as a TV reporter for CBS and NBC in Santa Barbara and Reno.

Enough about the guy and on to why he's making news today. Recently, gaming-dedicated site GamaSutra interviewed Karraker. It was a rather long interview and it was all about their marketing strategy, the PS3 launch, and other Sony stuff. However towards the end, the discussion shifted to PSP and downloadable contents. The moment we read that, we were like, "Dude, now we're talking."

"I think handheld is incredibly important for us, particularly as we start developing more and more downloadable content. And I’m not just talking about games, I’m talking about entertainment content as well," Karraker reveals. He then specifically pointed out TiVo-to-go saying it actually is a big hit. He then went on saying the DS simply cannot be compared to their product, as the former is more about gaming while the PSP offers a whole wide array of things.

The discussion then proceeded to PS1 games on the PSP. When asked how the emulated download works, Karraker explains, "Basically you just download them to the PS3, and bounce it to your PSP, and those will all be under US$ 5. And then there will be downloadable content from hotspots." Hmm, just under five bucks. What do you think?

Anyway, they then capped off the conversation with the types of games different markets dig. While actions and sports games work well with the PSP, such titles are not big hits in Japan as they prefer RPGs. Karraker then reflects, "it’s just a matter of getting the consumer in Japan accustomed to the idea of playing an expansive RPG on a handheld device."

It's true you won't "Need" a Ps3 to get Ps1 games on the psp, but it's mentioned so much i'd easily believe they're only rolling out the PS3 bit initially

This guy is actually quite smart. If you're remotely interested in this you really should read the entire article at gamasutra.

It really is worth it.

Well, if PS1 games for PSP were sold for 5$ or less, I would certainly buy a whole bucket of them.

If, on the contrary, they cost 10$+... then maybe one or two, namely FF7 and Oddworld : Abe Oddyssee.

Wii Virtual Console downloads START at $5 for NES games, then go as high as $15 for N64 titles!

$10 for N64. It is still a rip-off. So is this deal with sony. I have 53 games. WHy do i have to pay $5 per game again. Ugh...I wouldn't even pay $1 more just to get portable versions. Why not just run an emulator for them on a laptop? They are portable then!

if that´s true - 5 bucks a PSP game....

 » Pricing

Wow. If they really are charging only 5$ or so a game, then i'm all for it. I remember hearing before they'd be a good deal more expensive than that, but i'm not going to complain.

Just so long as i get Symphony of the Night on my PSP anyway. ;)

Sony - listen up. I am NOT buying a PS3 to get PS1 games for my PSP.

Deal with it or lose money.

Your choice.

   Re: Destructo - 2006-11-08

It has been cleared up already, you will NOT need a PS3 to download PS1 games for your PSP

i doubt that you will have to buy a ps3 for ps1 games to go onto the psp, that would be an interesting marketing strategy, but i am almost 87% positive that there will be a way for you to download them off of the internet. i wonder when the 3.0 firmware will come out though, there's been soo much talk of it, and its coming close to the release date of the ps3 and no update yet, hmm, i wonder........1

any idea when the ps1 emulator is gonna be available for the psp???

   by SomeGuyWithAnIdea (Unregistered) - 2006-11-08
 » Suppose...

that someone you know downloads a PS1 game for their PS3. Wouldn't it be possible that after they "bounce" it onto their PSP, you could "bounce" it again to yours?

If so you could have like 1 guy with a PS3 and everyone pitches in like a small sum and you all get the game. Possibly even cheaper than $5. (gasp)

   Re: Jake_Hoshgothen (Unregistered) - 2006-11-08
 » Possibly...

Not if it is a literal transfer, and not a copy. It could pass on the original, modified in some way by the prior system, and then delete the file as a result of the transfer, leaving you with only one file...

 » grrrr

i dont care how much it costs as long as i dont have to buy your crappy PS3 to download them to my psp!!

I just want to simply pay for them, download them over night and put them on my psp via my laptop.

athough downloading them via a hot spot wouldnt be so bad :-). I have a wi-fi max at home and it will bring a whole new era to the PSP.

Belive me when I say this; Sony, you are going to make a fortune!!

why should i pay for ps1 games i already own just to play them on a handheld. Il just download em 4 free off somewhere.

   by psp-er (Unregistered) - 2006-11-08
 » yeah

do they plan on saying what games will be out?
ridge racer and...
what?

why does everyone assume all ps1 games will be buyable? you really think square would release FFVII for $5? or $10? it's 3 discs so.. $15 maybe?

if the only thing that comes out are Sony made games then this ps1 thing will fail.

4 discs. man i paid less for the real PS1 version!.

oh and Firefox 2.0 rules. it checks my spelling so i don't sound like a moronic dumb illiterate n00b.

   Re: Jake_Hoshgothen (Unregistered) - 2006-11-08
 » Uh, No.

Square, you are forgetting, does not hold the rights to the software. It is officially made by them for sony. Therefore, sony may manipulate the price as they please.
   by Argh (Unregistered) - 2006-11-08
 » Ok.....

So you have to buy a $600 PS3 and a $250 PSP just to play old PS1 games that are worth only $2?!

 » Curse You Sony!

YES! I curse you... $5 for download of PS1 games. That's very tempting to UPGRADE and leave the hombrews at HOME... so to speak.

by Dr. Diesel (Unregistered) - 2006-11-08
 » He's correct...

He's absolutely correct, though. The DS is about gaming, the PSP isn't. It's basically a PocketPC, with the notable difference that its manufacturer doesn't allow people to use it the way they want to.

Kudos to the homebrew scene for giving me the PSP experience Sony doesn't want me to have.
