PSP logo big - Image 1If you frequent the PS2 and PSP online gaming servers, you may want to play the online modes for all their worth since you're not going to see them anymore after a couple of months. As it turns out, Sony will shut down some online gaming servers for some PS2 and PSP games effective June 30.

Check out the list of games that will be affected:
  • PlayStation 2
    • Amplitude
    • Destruction Derby Arenas
    • Everybody’s Golf
    • EyeToy Chat
    • F1 ‘04
    • Jak X
    • Lemmings PS2
    • My Street
    • Syphon Filter Omega Strain
    • This is Football 2004
    • This is Football 2005
    • Twisted Metal: Black Online
Of course, you can always resort to the offline game modes so you can still have your own piece of action from the games mentioned above, with the exception of EyeToy Chat and Twisted Metal: Black Online. The two titles do not come with offline modes, so gamers who are attached to them will have to say bye-bye to them come June 30.

 » Downloadable maps

Lemmings has downloadable maps, I believe. No head-to-head multiplayer as in the good old Lemmings for SNES.

» Its all about the number of users.

If not enough people play those particular games online, Sony (and other companies) cannot afford to pay to maintain the servers.

Generally when a game is out of print (ie not being sold new anymore) every day the company keeps its servers online, is another day of lost money. They have to balance this with the bad press they get when they close a server, and keep it up as long as it still has a large enough following.

It does suck when the game still has a small but loyal following, that just happens to be too small to make it worth keeping the servers up.

I guess there's always Ad-Hoc games and Xlink Kai.

 » DAMN IT!

I'm really going to miss Syphon Filter.

It is impossible to finish the game without completeing the online missions.

Too bad for al the people who buy a second hand copy.

And this is a 'SONY Bend' game too.

It would make more sense if Sony would release the server software when they close a server, so people can host their own servers.
