This article was originally posted on May 30, 2008 at 6:31 p.m. By way of the PSP port of the Chipmunk Physics Engine (CPE), homebrew developer MK2k managed to create Stakker PSP Final - a game that utilizes physics in a practical but fun way. Stakker even borrows concepts from the arcade game Stacker, block dropping mechanics from Tetris, and destructive physics fun from Boom Blox. This is Stakker PSP Final in its Update 2 form. There are basically two parts to Stakker PSP: a construction phase and a destruction phase. The construction phase provides you with random blocks that you may switch around in order to build a tower. The blocks come down at a steady rate. You may build the tower any way you wish, but as soon as the tower touches the marked height, the construction phase is over. But the fun has just begun: the game launches a primed missile, which will drop from the top of the screen. You launch it at the tower on whatever altitude you wish so as to cause maximum fallout. The tower's parts will be sent flying from the impact, and every time they bounce of the screen's walls, you get a point. Bounce as many pieces as you can, and gain tons of points. Build a tower with as many pieces as you can, and make them bounce often, and aim for maximum score. Coder MK2k has entered Stakker PSP to the PSP Hacks Homebrew Idol 2008 contest, but also took care of several suggestions made by the homebrew community. Update 2 has made the following changes to Stakker PSP Final:
Download: Stakker PSP Final Update 2 Visit: QJ.NET's PSP Development Forums *UPDATE*: This is just a teeny-eensy-weensy update, really. It appears that homebrew developer MK2k had two versions of Stakker PSP Final Update 2. Either that or someone requested that the analog input be dropped for simpler, more elementary controls. Stakker PSP Final Update 2 SE (it gets longer by the update, doesn't it?) is every little bit identical as the previous version you can download from the link provided above. The only difference with Final Update 2 SE is that it doesn't make use of the Sony PlayStation Portable's only analog stick. Like I said, teeny. Enjoy! » awsome game
this is 1 of the most addicting games ever. I just hope MK2k really doesnt stop updating this. IF he does continue it I would like a couple of features in it which I think would make the game even better.
1) When a peice falls off the platform, only 10 points should be deducted and you shouldnt have to restart the whole tower.
2)The game has a freeplay mode where the platform is the size of the bottom of the PSP screen (so 480 pixels long) and in this you should have a bomb feature where you can drop a maximum of 3 bombs into the tower ( by holding L shoulder plus clicking Trinagle/Square/Circle) and activate them at any given time (by holding R shoulder plus clicking Trinagle/Square/Circle)
I really love this game and I hope MK2k will release some more updates which have the features I listed.
Thank You

» Can you fix it?
Sorry bad english... Great game, but there's still some problems. I have a "FAT PSP" and it FREEZE some times, when I put the START button or I choose something in MENU. I testet the "Stakker PSP Final Update 2 SE" versio.

» Some Bug
This is a very addicting game. I love it. Love the sound tracks, some of my personal favorites in there. However, one very frustrating thing happens.
On my slim PSP running 3.95 GEN with 4GB memstick. After a piece falls off and I get 10 points deducted, the tower clears, a new tower starts and the first piece that lands perfectly fine goes away and deducts another 10 points. Veru rarely will it happen to 2 pieces in a row but I've sen that as well.
Very frustrating for anyone trying to build a high score but so far it hasn't stopped me from playing.
I will film this bug once I have more time in case the developer would like to see it.

» Don't press down
This happens to me too, what is happening is when you press down to make them fall faster, it goes so fast that it goes through the platform. Just don't press down for the pieces going directly on the platform. He even has a warning in the readme stating this. Maybe he'll fix it in the next version.

Thanks for the replies, I personally went in to a state of euphoria when I heard the opening guitar for "Dead Skin Mask" - Slayer's been my #1 favorite since Haunting the Chapel.
I read the install notes but skipped everything else, guess I wont hit down, impatient bastard I can be. :)

I love this game, even though I suck at it really bad! Here's a few suggestions I'd also like to make for a future update:
1. Let it play music stored in your memory stick.
2. Add a freeplay mode to let player create something like a rube goldberg machine! Add more shapes like triangle and circles. Say for example, player can select shape from a top menu, then increase/decrease size using analog stick, position it using d-pad, rotate using should buttons, etc, on a blank canvas. Then press start to see what happens! May be add some kind explosive to add the add as the main goal, to set it off. The more pieces successfully used, the higher the point!
3. I agree with above poster, don't restart the whole tower if a single piece falls of the platform. Make it say, it 3 falls, like a lifeline before each restart.
That's it for now. :)

1. It already does play your tunes, it uses the ms0:/MUSIC folder.
2. What you describe is this kinda game you get everywhere, sorta Draw-and-let-run stuff. Most of these games don't have a goal to achieve and I wanted to avoid this.
3. Practice more and you'll handle this ;)

» Hmm
1. Playing music isn't working. It only plays that default track.
2. Well I said a goal for type of mode would be to have a final objective, like set off an explosive/fireworks. Although PSP doesn't let you draw using a stylus, using the controls I described it shouldn't be too hard to create basic shapes, and I don't know if there are such games for the PSP. If you do, let me know! Try to visualise what I described. Create shapes to set up a contraption, apply the power of physics and the end it with a big bang.
3. I'll keep trying!
Anyway I think you released a new version of the game, so I'll check that out.

That's the issue with every JGE++ based Game/App. Suspend mode is not supported, sorry.

» Reason for the "SE" Version
The "SE" version was made because someone reported to me that his analogstick is stuck to the down-left corner which results in continuous skipping of music tunes in the game and thus a big deal of annoyance. I just made that version for him and any other who have analog stick problems or just want to hold SELECT and press D-Pad for the music player stuff.

The link on the download page was being stubborn, only taking me back to the same place(refreshing the page), but it finally worked.
Love this homebrew though. It is awesome. Are you the guy who wrote crayon physics?

Had a few suggestions,
like others expressing their distaste with the "instant wipe" of all your blocks if one piece falls off.
I was thinking to do away with the height marker line for each level, instead just have a certain score that has to be attained for each level, that way you can have more freedom with the number of levels.
For example if your blocks reach the top than the missile comes and you get to shoot the tower, if what lands in the hole and walls adds up to the level's score, you go onto the next level, if not you start over from the base, maybe with the leftovers that didn't fall in...
In later levels you can add shape or color bonuses where a random 3- maybe 7 piece shape gets generated, you make the shape the shape solidifies, you shoot the tower, the solidified multi-piece shape falls in the hole you get the bonus, if not, you don't get the bonus... It adds a lot of challenge and variety to an already very solid game.
thank you for making this, i showed my girlfriend who is a avid lumines fan, she could not stop laughing, well until she got the screen saying your score is too low, than she wanted to throw the psp at me!
good luck with your developments!

» Cheaters
IMPORTANT: I have encountered a lot of cheating attempts on the stakker online highscore. I cleaned the table and locked it. Don't be too angry at me, there will be a security updated version out soon and I'm thinking about starting the highscore completely over, so go practise for that day (release around tuesday next week, stay tuned)!
