SEGA have announced that the first Tenchu game for the a handheld console, Tenchu: Time of the Assassins, will be released exclusively for the PSP on June 23rd, 2006. SEGA has partnered with FromSoftware and K2 Studios - developers of  Tenchu: Fatal Shadows for the PS2 - to continue the legacy of the Tenchu franchise on Sony's handheld console.

The Tenchu fans amongst you will be pleased to hear that the complex 3D environments the series is known for have been carried over on the PSP in their entirety, with no small detail overlooked. This game won't be a bad quality home console Tenchu rip-off. Enhanced stealth manoeuvres challenge your ninja skills, and all-new kill moves add yet more realism and entertainment to this ninja-based action adventure. Now, every enemy is susceptible to carefully planned stealth kills – even the end level bosses!

Matt Woodley, Creative Director of SEGA said "Tenchu’s gameplay offers all the strategy of a stealth game but none of the frustration. This next release represents SEGA’s commitment to providing compelling new content to the handheld market” . Classic Tenchu characters such as Rikimaru, Ayame, Rin, and Tesshu will return for Time of the Assassins, with each character tied to a different story, and each story offers different levels to play through. In addition to the scenario mode, there is also a ‘free mission’ mode that’s comprised of 50 independent missions to enjoy after you have completed the single-player campaign.

Tenchu: Time of the Assassins will also feature to ability to play head-to-head and cooperatively with friends using the PSP's Ad-Hoc feature; along with the ability to create your own stages and share them with friends, also via ad hoc download.

Wow! This game came out in Japan almost a year ago. I already beat it twice. Never thought it'd come to American shores. It's a good game, the graphics are impressive but the game is a bit too easy and there isn't much to do.

Most of the same starts you out on one side of the map and you have to get to the other side to get to the boss. Along the way you find some guards to fight but not many. It's mostly you running around and looking at the beautiful enviroments. Maybe it'll be tweaked for American audiances. Hopefully.

Although I never played it all the way through I've played the japanese one before and it's an alright game... I never tried the level creator thingie though, which all in all sounds nice. Now that I finally got a second PSP I think I'll give it a rent.

 » better be different

i have the japanese one aswell, it was dissappointing, since the ps1 versions were way better, this ones draw distance is appalling. but hopefully this one should be different and better...

I though this game was disappointing too. Graphics kinda sucked, and it was really easy. Besides, it has some control and cammera issues that didn't make it any better.
It's still a Tenchu, though, but it looks more like a PS1 game than a PS2 or PSP.

This is great, there are a hell of a lot of characters to controll from all of the Tenchu bosses to a samurai to a bear. The multiplayer is downright awesome and making your own levels is the ****. They need online though because I have a hard time finding people with Tenchu though. The map editor is awesome and from the SSs looks like they added some type of AA but the DD looks the same although it's not a problem if you ever played a PS1 tenchu game.

 » this game is great

Ive had the japanese version for ages, its probably my favorite PSP game. plenty of playable characters & you can also create your own missions, or download missions created by others

my questions is: did they change anything, or is it exactly the same game??? (apart from the language that is)

» Tenchu PS1 style on the go...

I found it familiar to the tenchu I played on the PS1 console. That is a good thing. My favorite.
If you are looking for a new Tenchu, I am sorry.
But if you love the ninja action of Tenchu enough, and want it on the go.... :)

 » @14

The load times are pretty good, especially considering iso's are slightly faster than loading the real deals, and also to the person who said the graphics were bad...you are an idiot!! The graphics scaled down VERY well from the PS2 version!!!

» LOOK @ THE SCRREN SHOTS

LMFAO!!! Look at the screens, u can totally tell they are from a devkit version on a PC!!! look how crisp the textures are, anisitrophic filtering (or even 2Xsai maybe) Also no jaggies, the res of these screens are higher than the psp can do natively, looks like some hardware anti-aliasing aswell! I have the game, a psp screen is smaller than the 1st screen, and mine looks all jagged on the edges in comparison! They got thems a nice radeon, yes sir!

 » Well...

I just hope they fix the draw distance, and the load time is slightly annoying at times, but it's bearable. The game lags too much on certain levels you make or at times in the JAp version, hope that's fixed too.
By the way, Fatal shadows is a great game, you should get it if you really like the Tenchu series. D:
