UMD going awol? Are UMD movies going the way of the dinosaur? Well, Kotaku reports a rumor today from an alleged Target employee stating that at least his retailer is getting rid of the poorly-supported format.

The story goes that the employee works in the electronics section at a Target store and when he walked in today he noticed the PSP UMD movies section was missing. His boss supposedly said that Target wasn't going to be selling UMD movies any longer. This employee supposedly then called other Target stores in his city, and they also said they had pulled the disks.

So, does this mean UMD movies are going, going, gone?

Well, we reported earlier that Wal Mart may get rid of UMD sales this year and that Universal movies studios are no longer going to make movies for the UMD format.

But Target online still lists around 500 UMD movies for sale, so these disappearances from Target could just be a regional effort. Or it could be the beginning of a trend to move away from the format.

What do you guys think?

» Movies for PSP are a bad idea anyway.

They won't put out the movies that people want to see and they won't bring the tiny UMD's down to a tiny price.

 » needs to be cheaper

UMD movies should be like $5 dollars each. I would buy a few movies at that price.

 » UMDs are anachronisms

Why would someone buy a UMD when they can buy a DVD for the same price or less. A DVD has more features and if you really want it on PSP you can rip from the DVD and encode it for your PSP.
Some marketing retard at Sony should be shot.

 » UMDs = Nothin..

they should learn by now that nobody feels like carring something bigger (thicker) than a CD now a days... well thats my point.. many psp owners just carry one game inside their psp just to save space without others umds... tech should be used there... downloadble... n how bout memory sticks with movies?? something that cant be formatted or whatever!!!

 » i agree with #5

umds are way over priced, lots are even more expensive than dvd's and have less features and can only be see on a psp with no line out or any way of watching them on anything else. they should make it down to no more than $10 for the new good onesand like $5 for the regular ones, then theyd be worth it but for now i'd go with dvd.

 » WAL MART PULLING UMDS

I myself am a wal mart associate. I work in the back and noticed there were boxes full of umd movies i asked my fellow employees and they told me we would not carry anymore movies in the umd format so they had to send those back.

 » think about this...

what if it means that sony realised what a peice of crap the umd "caddy" is... i only have one that is in playable condition and i just swap the naked umds through the top edge.

   by overflow.tiff - 2006-07-12
 » yeah

you guys are right. umd movies should NOT be as expensive as regular DVDs. its not everyday that someone gets a PSP. so this was bound to happen thanks to piracy and the small resolution. people complain too much about the screen being so itty bitty, y'know?

 » MS Movies

like #7 said, the idea of a MSD with a movie loaded on it would be a great idea aslong as you can load other stuff on it and aslong as a movie is small memory size cuz all my mp4's are around 800 mb and aslong as you can take it off and swap in another with like a download service they can do or something like that.

 » Memory stick?

Odds are if they start putting movies on memory sticks instead of UMDs, they'll use some form of ROM (Read Only Memory) card; that'll keep the price down to realistic levels (a flash memory card that would hold UMD quality video would cost the same as a 1-2GB memory card right now). Course that means that memory card wouldn't be able to be used for anything other than the movie (i.e. it can't be erased/written to), but I'm sure that's what they plan.

The reason they are not selling is because UMDs are a piece of *****, period.

   by DJShrimpy (Unregistered) - 2006-07-12
 » Heh.

Let's see, you can most likely buy a DVD cheaper, with more features, and a DVD player doesn't have a battery right? No, so the movie's won't suck the battery out in two hours. I wonder why these didn't sell then?

 » Universal Media my @$$

The fact that they charge the same price as a dvd for a video that has the movie and previews on it and nothing else is a bit beyond lame. I tried out "APPLESEED"(great movie by the way. get the dvd) using the psp2tv on my new 46" lcd. I chose this particular movie because of how intense the visuals are. Well It may be the fact that my monitor is too big and too clear. But it was a great dissapointment.

The home screen is a bit choppy but with a little adjustment things get smoothed out. The games are pixelated but not as bad as the movies. I've tried this before on my old tv. But that was a 26" console. And it was still a bit choppy but it didn't have the huge squares that showed up on the lcd.

MaxMedia and proper editing to the videos that you encode is the way to go in my humble opinion. The bar down the street from my place sometimes lets me hook the psp up to their plasma when the game isn't on, and the picture is much cleaner with the videos I've set up than what I got with the umd.

» UMD should have been for games only.

The movies and music were a bad idea for the UMD. People were excited because they thought UMD's would be used in a large assortment of devices and there would be burners available. I remember when Sony even considered allowing the PSP to burn data onto blank UMD's.

Well after all of that we ended up with a format that will only last until the PSP goes under in about 5 years.

So, what happens when the umds go off of the shelves -- you have this slot in the back of your psp for nothing? - and the whole dvd ripping thing hasn't really worked for me - it seems that there is always one chapter on the dvd - that's in another language... does this happen to others? --- the only time i could really watch the movie was when i ripped a rigion 2 movie - das vermächtnis der tempelritter. --- german - national treasure - when i ripped it - the audio track on the entire ripped and converted to mpeg4 file set was in English - and the last chaper was in german - which i understand - and i was able to watch that movie - but you'd figure that the whole movie would have been in german since it was the german dvd --- how would i set the rip language? - if i can't buy the umd's then - i want to at least be able to rip dvd's so that i can understand them - for example - the american region 1 - shreck 2 movie -- was half in french when i ripped it :-/

My sentiment exactly…$5 would be too much, after tax you’re closer to $10…for what? And just exactly how-the-hell many copies of Shrek do I need? I would like someone to give me a good reason to buy a UMD…the Sony marketing and development department obviously had a few. At the end of this year I’m going to be the high bidder on a UMD (.01 + $1.99 s&h) and place it next to my Betamax, DAT and MiniDisc collection of Sony’s failed view on the American marketplace

 » about time!!!!!!!

UMD Movies Suck anyway.
I haven't bought a single movie yet, and never will!
Seemed like a good concept but prices killed it!
If they sold for $4.99 maybe I would of bought some.
Yeah, get them of the shelves , they're just taking up space!

   by CarXCrashXHearts - 2006-07-12
 » Sorry to say,

but they're not pulling UMDs off of the shelves, moron. I almost crapped my pants when you made that the title.

On the other hand, UMD movies and music? THEY SUCK! BRING THEM OFF OF STORE SHELVES ALL YOU WANT! It'll make more room for real UMD content, like games!!!!

 » yeah

I mean why should you lug around a disc for one movie that you cant watch anywhere else instead of just putting 5 on a memory stick and taking them off watching them on pc when you like convert dvd's to memory stick !

 » AHHHHHHHH

I a fine with them letting go of movies. But if they get rid of Games im gonna be so pissed.

Sony should just give up on the UMD format and stick to releasing stuff on memory stick.

At least the duo/pro duo format isn't gonna die anytime soon.

 » Maybe just a sale?

My wife told me about some UMD games at Target last week going for $5-10 also, maybe it was just a sale on all UMDs? She wasn't too interested in titles but knew Infected was one and she said another was some sort of army game...

 » yeah...

If they were cheaper then they would be a hit. They cost as much as a DVD and if your going to get a movie you want to be able to watch it on more than your psp. People just buy bigger memory sticks and put movies on those. I personally have never bought a UMD movie.

 » UMD's are not Universal!

Sad, they are cool! If Sony would have made something earlier to make it so you could watch a UMD (UMD player?) on your TV, then they would have lasted...if not then drop the price! ~$20 for a movie that you could watch only on your PSP? Everyone buys movies (DVD's) but not everyone has a PSP. So in order sell them to us, don't make them so expensive...$10 or less is more like it! What were you thinking Sony?

thare is. im not sure whare you can get it but i remember reading an article about that stuff being sold on UMD
