Vice City Stories

We would like to start this article with a sincere apology and by admitting that yesterday's article claiming that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories required PSP firmware 2.81 was incorrect. We based this information on data we had obtained from what we thought was a trustworthy news source, but it appears we were wrong. The fact of the matter is that you can play Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories without updating to 2.81, using Booster's amazing DevHook. All you have to do is emulate firmware 2.71 and select the 2.xx to 2.00 UMD option and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories will work fine. The 2.81 update is on the UMD disc, but you do not have to use it.

Discussion has been rife on this subject both in the comments section and in our forums, with many PSP owners confused on whether to buy Vice City Stories or not because of this. We have had it confirmed by many of our forum users that it works with 2.xx to 2.00 UMD option in DevHook and firmware 2.71 emulation. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you, but it was a mistake that we highly regret. Most of you will have probably discovered that VCS works on 2.71 with DevHook, but this post is an informative article and is an apology from us to you. How will we repay you? By giving you the best news 24/7 of course!

An 11-page discussion in our forums has been going on since yesterday, so if you want to get in on the action, all you have to do is head over to our forums. This may be an apology, but it is clear now that you can have Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories playable with homebrew on 1.5 and with Dark_Alex's 2.71 SE-B custom firmware using the miracles of DevHook. To me, that sounds like more of a success!

 » Well...

2.81 did not change the encryption / decryption keys so I do not see why 2.71 would not be able to play it. I wonder if 2.82 can be decrypted or if Sony changed the scheme once again to throw off Dark_Alex.

 » Poor kids from yesterday...

I feel bad for all those kids yesterday who kept insisting this 2.82 rumour was correct when everyone else kept trying to tell them that they were wrong. That we were in fact playing the game on our devhook 2.71's. Oh well, they must be so ashamed now.

I can actually buy the game now.

Sony should know that th homebrew community won't give up on what they support and they should stop trying to stop us. But yeah, what do they care anyway...

Like I would give up stuff like the GBA emulator...

Yeah,i have it running from the XMB just fine. Just remember that if you compress the game, you will want to download the new overclocking module. I love VCS :) :) :) :)

 » That's Great, but...

Now I bet you there at least a handful of people who will hate QJ forever 'cause they believed that article about needing to upgrade and did so.

@lava soft

It works on Devhook 2.71, not a PSP updated to 2.71.

   Re: MLin (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » works for me

runs jerky but fine on my updated 2.71
   by Dimensio (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
» So how, exactly, do I do this?

I have Devhook .46 and the 2.71 firmware files for emulation. When I attempt to run the game from the UMD via emulated 2.71 I am told that the game cannot run without firmare version 2.81.

The game DOES work if I launch it from an unmodified ISO ripped directly from the UMD disc.

It would appear that people are making assumptions about what works and about what does not work without actually confirming any reports.

   Re: ja (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » you are so right

I have the same setting and the UMD does not work either. Edison Carter came to the same conclusion in a different forum.

UMD version DOES NOT WORK with DevHook, so dont bother buying it like I did.

Don't worry 'bout it QJ, you're still the best PSP news site by far.

the fact that you're posting here sez it all

DCEmu is one of the best news site cous it covers ALL homebrewq capable platforms including sega saturn, but for PSP news, QJ is still top and better looking too

FU QJ.net

   Re: Dark (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
» first of all, it's your fault.

If you care about homebrew that much, then you WOULD NOT update to 2.81 ....but since you CHOOSE to leave the homebrew for GTA.
That mean you have already decided not to use homebrew anymore. So no point in blaming QJ.

I am not on anyside.... QJ doesn't rock or suck... QJ is just QJ to me..

im emulating 2.71 with DA's SE devhook and the umd dont play. I have to make an iSo right? NE1 know what prxs to switch n stufF bc UMD doesnt play emulating 2.71

   by M (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » meh

Meh, it was a mistake. I don't really think anyone should get worked up about it. If you're too lazy to even try it on DevHook before upgrading, then you obviously don't care about homebrew that much anyway.

 » ya'll are crack heads

My iso runs perfect just through 2.71SE-b's new isc/cso suport alone without the need even for Devhook.

   Re: MJ (Unregistered) - 2006-11-01
 » yup

Works for me too - clean dump ISO, compressed to CSO (around 915mb), running on 2.71 SE-B. Worked just like any other ISO/CSO. no tricks! +D

The umd still doesnt work on devhook, right? The only people playing it on devhook downloaded the iso, right? I own it and want to play it. the 2xx->2.0 doesn't work for the umd, right- only iso. NE1 have tips for building my own iso ? thnx

   Re: . (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » .

yep, you need an iso... umd dont work. i just picked my copy up from eb games, when you try to run umd, it says, "this game requires 2.81, you currently have system 2.71" it says that even with that option of changing whatever 2.xx to 2.00. so yea, you need an iso

download fastloader .7 and read this article.

   by logicbomb.de - 2006-10-31
 » okay.....

so we've heard a million trolls say that that the ISO works with devhook 2.71

okay

great

fine. we know the patched iso works - its been practically shoved downour throats a thousand times already.

But what if you bought the actual UMD and don't care to rip and patch it?

can ONE single *****ing person at least confirm whether or noit the UNTOUCHED STOREBOUGHT UMD works in either 2.71 SEx or devhook (or even 2.71se running devhook)?????

because seriously, I haven't seen one success story of some just running the UMD and having it work even with the 2.xx to 2.0 sfo spoof

dont get me wrong, i want the UMD to work as much as anyone else but who here has been able to just drop this UMD in devhook and maker it work???

anyone?????

   Re: ME :D (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » Read

Maybe if you had read som of the previous posts you would already know by now the UMD WORKS on 2.71 emulated firmware.

   Re: logicbomb.de - 2006-10-31
 » LOL

how about YOU read.

I dont give a flying fluck about what YOU read on the forums or any the comments what I am asking for (and you might have know this if you bothered to comprehend anything) is someone who actually got it working with just the UMD.

YOU obviously haven't got it working with the UMD only cos you're obviously just regurgitating the same crap thats all over the comments. It seems that anyone who bought the UMD is SOL. can someone PLEASE prove me wrong WITH YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE instead of just repeating the same bull***** you've head from you momma's-sister's-cousins'-babydaddy's-sister-in-law FFS?

   Re: Dimensio (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » Unfortunately, no

As I stated in my previous posting, I have not been able to launch the UMD disc via Devhook. I was only able to launch the game after ripping an ISO file and launching that unmodified ISO in Devhook.

As the ISO works without any patching, it is possible that Devhook can be modified to run from the UMD without too much difficulty, but at present I know of no means for launching the UMD directly via Devhook, unless a 'swap' trick works.
