Okay, so we were really impressed with Joe Stranger's detachable PS2 stick for the PSP, and it seems that you guys were too. Most of the comments on it said things to the effect of: "I want that." So, we decided to check if he's made any updates on his amazing mod, and this YouTube video turns up.

Yep, the thing has an outer casing under the stick now. It's really starting to look like something you could buy from a retailer. Some people have commented that if he did manage to put this accessory erm... mod up for sale, he'll make millions. Well what do you guys think? Would you really buy one? Or would you rather wait until Joe puts a tutorial up so you could put your soldering skills to use?

Some people have been screaming mad though, and they are demanding that Joe post schematics and tutorials, just to prove his project's legit. That's the internet for you. Well, we here at QJ don't really want to take sides on that issue. So far as it looks, the vid looks real. You guys make up your mind about that on your own.

Anyway, we're still waiting for that steering wheel "accessory." Keep up the good work Joe!

It doesn't really solve the problem of only having one memory stick because you still can't use them both at the same time without discomfort. If it was on the othe side it would be a more useful attachment I would think.

   Re: Edlad (Unregistered) - 2006-10-19
 » Having 2?

Firstly i assume you mean having one analog stick, rather than 1 memory stick.

Secondly it's not a 2nd analog stick in the sense that it can do different things to the current stick, check out:

http://pspupdates.qj.net/PS2-s-analog-stick-ported-to-the-PSP-/pg/49/aid/69065

You'll see the 2 sticks perform the same function, it's just easier on the thumb.

   Re: _F1 - 2006-10-19
 » I think you're missing the point

I'm assuming you mean analog stick... The point of this mod isn't to provide a second analog stick, as such, but simply to improve the existing nub.

It would be close to impossible to make another stick that could be used in combination with the existing nub, especially as commercial games aren't developed with the capability of two analog sticks.

The only way that could be possible is with major hardware modifications and homebrew would have to be developed specifically for the second analog stick.

 » PSX Emu

Er... well, responding Edlad + _F1 we should remember the 3.0 FW and its PSX emulator. Lots of games use TWO analog sticks. How this will be taken care of, we should wait + pray.

that is just a usb socket, it is not a real usb input, it will only work for the analog

that thing is uber crap. looks crap & would play crap. its totally out of the way of the psp.

i wouldn't mind buying that ^^ because this could mean that one day someone could make a homebrew to play ps2 games ... but would need some more shoulder buttons :/ but still, he's got a good idea on a mod .

 » Next Step

Now that this analog stick mod is complete, the next step to this mod would be to map this to a bluetooth sensor to pick up the SIXAXIS signal and you can play PSP games with the PS3 controller using tilt steering and etc functions.

 » I don't see...

What's wrong with the current analog stick? I have never had any problems with the one I have and it feels great to me. I don't want some large-arse analog stick on it sticking seven miles out of the face of the PSP; it goes against the whole sleek look and won't fit in the cases.

The one that comes with it is cool enough for me and has some resistance to it. It reminds me of the Dreamcast's analog stick and that's my favorite one. The PS2's analog stick is too flimsy. I hate the loose feel it has and actually prefer third party controller analog sticks to the original.

 » right side PLS

yeah man the whole left hand side is a bit of a waist, we got a anologue stick on the left allready. . . but i see why hes done it coz it would be a mission to map the cross square triangle and circle buttons to an anolouge imput and also i can't think of any games that have controls mapped those button unless some of the new 3D fps homebrews support it in the future, such as psp doom ! that would be aswome, then maby we can have Z.0.E on psp one day then my handheld will be compleat! as we have FF7 and DDR for the psp in the works as of firmware 3.00

 » dual analog sticks

Coded arms would be greatly helped by a 2nd analog stick, or something. This mod looks really good, and I have to say that my analog nub on my psp isn't the most responsive thing ever, sometimes it sticks to the right and dosen't center rotally, so something like this, to use a quality analog stick, would be awesome! good work.

@Reneid Klein
The PS2's analog stick is the best for its smoothness, 2nd to the Xbox S controller, just because the xbox controller has better thumb grips imo.

   by Samball91 (Unregistered) - 2006-10-19
 » maybe....

you could move the stick to the other side and make it control the D-PAD, or have one on each side, for D-PAD and Analog at the same time, making it more like an XBOX or PS2 controller. This looks great though, i'm looking forwards to more updates.

   Re: KGui (Unregistered) - 2006-11-10
» Finally, someone who gets it...

(not to Samball91) --
Geez, a lot of you ppl are dumb. This isn't a completely seperate analog stick, it just piggy-backs from the nub. You should look into things more before you make yourself look like a fool by posting your (obviously) uninformed replies.

Also, placement isn't an issue, you could place it just about anywhere on the casing that isn't already occupied. Joe just placed it where it's most comfortable to him.
--
At least YOU get it, Samball91. Actually, All of the buttons CAN be moved "outside the box" (though I'm not sure if the D-PAD would work with a literal analog joystick -- it'd be closer to an atari joystick; they could be moved to the other side though.)

What I'm thinking is an entire mod for a PS1/2 controller... it'd take some work, but it IS possible (minus the extra R2 and L2 buttons); and if FW3.0 is going to emu psx then maybe sony will give us a usb controller of their own? Maybe not...

How did he make that slick casing? I'm impressed!
by donut dude (Unregistered) - 2006-10-19
 » well...

this can lead to dual analogs for fps games
maybe he can add some more triggers

 » sigh

god damn you people are stupid this is not another usb input. both sticks will and will always do the same function. another one is impossible unless he makes the other stick take over for the digital pads. but those are not a pov... so yeah impossible

   by Dude (Unregistered) - 2006-10-19
 » Easy...

Lol. King of an easy project, other than the cutting a hole in the middle of the faceplate. I could've done this, but I loke my PSP unmodified.

 » / [] O X

does anyone know if the / [] O X buttons give an analog or a digital output cause i know the ps2 and xbox pad buttons are analog (weather games choose to use it or not)

its just i would be interested in this mod to play katamari by mounting the analog pad on the other side

   by picneec13 (Unregistered) - 2006-10-19
 » pretty sweet

i, personally, consider myself horrible with soldering guns. I think it would be easier for the less capable DIYers to just plug in some type of thing that plugs in the top usb port of the psp, and comes along the top to the left to about where the stick is already... if you understand what i mean by it.

   by jabberwocky20 (Unregistered) - 2006-10-19
 » Nice design

I can see how this would be a good attachment, allowing the thumb to stay in a more relaxed position. I can't tell ya how many times I had to stop in the middle of intense game play just to give my thumbs a break :P . And yah, the casing is nice too. I like how the thing just plugs and plays. I would have to say the best thing about it is you wouldn't need any stinkin firmware update to run it...lol.

 » really coming along

man this is really coming along well i dont think i would pay for it i mean dont get me wrong its cool but its nuthin a little sodering and a couple things from radio shack couldnt do still amazing. but the fact remains thaqt people would buy it for fear of breaking there psp so if sony aint got a problem and ur sure that theres a small possobility of breaking em then go 4 it. i was thinking just a few min ago woulld u guys think it is possible to have an open connection on ur computer wireless internet of course and through the feed u oculd acess the music on ur computer? that would be an sweet a$$ accesory wireless music feed from pc to psp couse ud probly not with out the right ardware on ur psp maybe i should tell sony of my idea. naa

you can already do music, videos and pictures from pc to psp, use pimpstreamer
   by p0stal_sean (Unregistered) - 2006-10-19
 » ook people listen

its not a usb port like u think yeah its a usb connector but thats just coincedance that it happens work out in the design. it does not in any way connect to the mem stick so don think this would work on ur computer. xcept maybe using ur keybar in some wierd way as an analog stick. 3 he cant put it on the other side ot make any buit of a difference cause u can only use i analog at a time THIS IS NOT A SECOOND ANALOG STICK. 3 this is just sadured into the analog stick its not directly connected to the psp so its pretty much just an analog mod. ok i hope some of u learned sumthin today till next time 4 really need to try this so if i got some free time in gonna try it my self since my nub has been broken for some time now

 » I want one!

I always find using the current stick uncomforable. I Would LOVE this. If only I could purchase this, but I don't see how i could buy the input, seeing as how it would have to be added into my PSP.

 » explain

what i dont understand, and maybe its because of my lack of knowledge on electrical engineering, but in FPS games, the shape pad operates as though its a d-pad, so why couldnt a stick be installed on the right side of the PSP and replace or emulate the same electrical functions. So up would be triangle, down X and so on, aswell as diagonals, since the pressing of two adjacent shapes simulates that...i dont know...thats what i want though, SOMEONE MAKE THAT.

   by alright (Unregistered) - 2006-11-01
 » ppl think

k its kinda cool but on the other side it would be more better then u could use two at once for like a fps game or something then some one could emulate halo on the psp that would be sweet

i'd deffinetly buy one
