Alright. So the latest official firmware for the PSP was released the other day, and most probably, some of you are waiting for Dark AleX to give us some feedback before we update our PSP units.

So, Bob, what's the damage? Is it hackable?

Though not coming from DAX himself, Alek mentions that PSP OFW 5.50 came with it some tweaks which were not unexpected. Reports have been trickling in: there's the TIFF exploit, which now shows up as an incompatible file, and the strange bug with standby/suspend mode (note that this bug isn't universal). In Alek's words:

As we saw yesterday, this new ofw has been finally released, with those subfolders and some fixes that were expected, to be honest.

Between those fixes it’s the recent TIFF exploit that was found and that it’s still under development, and it seems that there are also some bugs, like one that literally f***s the standby.

What do you think about those “new features”? Have you got any bugs like those or can confirm the standby one?

Edit: Seems like this new update has the encryption tables changed (at least the 1g one), as it can’t be decrypted with latest psardumper. Anyway, won’t be probably a problem.

Posted by marcoshummel in the Dark AleX forums, these vids show issues found with the TIFF and standby mode on PSP FW 5.50. Again, the standby bug isn't universally confirmed for all kinds of PSP units. Some users have reported that their suspending their PSP works fine:

 » well

i hope this will ward off quite a few pirates.....

 » .....

Are you sure your not a pirate yourself? If not why would you be interested in reading about this?

   Re: Althor - 2009-04-22
 » Right

I have to agree with you there xkiraisgodx, however, just because they are lookin at m33 stuff doesn't neccesarily mean ISO pirate, it could just be that he is a HBrew enthusiast and thinks the pirating is getting out of control. Or maybe he is just jumping on the "PIRACY IS MASSIV ADN DISGRACEFUL" band wagon that made tracks onto QJ over the past few days. However, whatever fearlubu says will not stop people from pirating games.
Where there's a way, there's an illegal usage too. Unfortunate but in this case rings true.

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-04-22
 » So therefore xkiraisgodx

by your logic it also makes me a pirate and you a pirate as well. Since why would you and I be readin this article unless we're not pirates.

   Re: xkiraisgodx - 2009-04-22
 » yes...

yes, by my logic anyone here can be a pirate including myself if that is the case

   Re: xCraftx - 2009-04-22
 » -_- stereotypes

guess what? i have 5.00-6 m33 and I have never pirated a psp game, i use cfw because it gives me freedom to do whatever i want within the psp's ability :)

crowbar can open just about any thing.
crowbar is the master/owner of the universe
we prey to said being
and there are a lot of said crowbars
i better get to it!?!

And then Gordon Freeman will appear with the golden crowbar of destiny :D

 » Downer...

Maybe it could be hackable, if the Gripshift savegame exploit still works..?

By the way. Hail the crowbar!!! :D

   Re: Drunk Vegan - 2009-04-22
 » no

Gripshift exploit definitely does *not* work on 5.50.

They patched it with the "security update" of 5.03 - it's now locked out.

 » hmm

new tiff exploit perhaps? tiff support is still there.. they just blocked out the current tiff exploit somehow.

   Re: DarkXCloud - 2009-04-22
 » idk

Is tiff support there?... or what?

   Re: Foolmonkey - 2009-04-22
 » yea

regular tiff's still work, they just blocked the exploit. need a new one :P

Re: Aces In The Palm - 2009-04-23
» i think it goes deeper than that

i been trying the old 2.71 HEN's on 5.50 and to me it seems that if the tiff links to another file (say h.bin) then it is shown as unsupported or corrupted.

 » Arrggh!

Arrggh Ye all be Pirates, Now go off and plunder ye nearest Booty... Oooh!

   by hush404 - 2009-04-22
 » Ha.

Glad Sony is taking some right steps to stop piracy. Doubt it'll hold but it's at least nice to see.

Oh and Althor, claiming that "PIRACY IS MASSIV ADN DISGRACEFUL" is a band-wagon is f***ing crazy. It IS rampant and ruining gaming on the system! Developers WON'T make games that don't sell and they don't sell simply because so many people download them illegally. Homebrewing is nothing wrong what so ever - using said methods to get all the current PSP games for yourself without paying is wrong.

 » lol

   Re: NakedFaerie - 2009-04-29

You are the one to blame for 1 more pirate out there. Happy?
   by cloudnine - 2009-04-23
 » im a pirate, but...

it's because it's very real to pirate a game on the psp. The same is with the ds. Kudos for the guys that hacked it. I enjoyed many games and only beat God Of War. Now, here is the twisted part. During the past 6 months, I only played Hot Shot Golf 2 (PS1), NHL 2001 (PS1), Sonic 2 (Emu), Greatest Heavyweights (Emu) and Tetris (Emu). Granted, these games receive 80% of play on my PSP. The psp have a lot of great titles, but it's better for homebrew. It's only dead if you let it be.

 » Improved security.

i just upgraded to try 5.50 and what i noticed was it has improved security cz in the previous updates we are able to boot homebrews but it gives an error right? in 5.50 it just gives an error when tried to boot.....Argghh.

   by StrikeFear13 - 2009-04-23
 » Hmm..

I give DAX a week at most before he's got 5.50 cracked.

   by Aphex85 - 2009-04-23
 » Oh look.......

There are more people bashing CFW, Again! look i agree pirating is wrong, everyone knows that, but if your the sort of person that instantly thinks having CFW on a psp makes you a pirate then you should go too another site a ***** abouting it there.

How many times do i and others on this site have to say this. HAVING CFW DOESN'T MAKE YOU A F**KING PIRATE! If your downloading the game then fine, HOWEVER, CFW also allows us to use homebrew, emulators and Other wonderful programs that are completely legit.

Besides, I like having iso's versions of MY games. if i've paid for the games then i should be able to do the F**k i want with them. I and Other don't like using UMDs. There brittle liquid disks of s**t that take so much space up when i'm out and about.

So all you bandwaggon retards can go suck one off. QJ is based around CFW and homebrew otherwise they wouldn't post information about it would they.

   Re: NakedFaerie - 2009-04-29
 » agreed

I agree with you 100%

I have UMDs but they are so slow compared to ISOs and they also use more battery so bring on the big MS and ISOs. Am I talking about piracey? Nope. I'm talking about backing up the fragile UMDs I own. I got one the other month and used it twice and its now broken. I'm glad I made an ISO of it or I would be forced to go and buy it again.
