PSP Slim details anew - Image 1The PlayStation Portable community was literally rocked when gaming site Kotaku unloaded tons of details for the much-rumored redesigned handheld console. However, the said report met skepticisms from the gaming community particularly the info on the 8GB worth of internal flash memory and alleged shift to LED screen.

Website Rumor Reporter, furthermore, categorically stated today that the said story is indeed misleading and (we quote) is "mainly factually inaccurate." Quite interestingly, the said site maintained that it has more credible sources and is now divulging what they call as the "real" details of the PSP Slim. Here's the list:

  • New slimmer PSP is indeed in the works. Hardware is essentially the same, and will NOT have any big speed increases.
  • There's no longer a UMD Tray, but a slot loader instead. Design is supposed to have an even "cleaner" look, much like the DS Lite.
  • The screen is the exact same size, and is sidekick-esque. This means that there's some sort of a flip-factor, making the overall system even smaller.
  • The screen is still LCD, not LED. Either way, battery-life will obviously be improved.
  • Sony is considering bluetooth capabilities.
  • Underneath the screen is the home button, the brightness controls and the volume button. This revision will also include all-new controls for chapter skipping with UMD movies and music tracks.
  • Not 8GB of on-board memory. 4GB is more likely. However, the storage capacity could change.
Again, we're just reporting unofficial info here. We also clarify that we wish not to discredit any of the various sources lately popping out regarding the looming PSP redesign. The best we can offer for now is a guarantee that QJ.net will be keeping its eyes glued to various channels until we flesh out what's the real deal with this issue.

Until that time comes, we're all free to speculate right?

TehMastr, your an idiot. This is not psp 2. This is only a redesign. Can you imagine how having a touch screen would affect other games already out? if you want a touch screen that badly go get a ds. and tilt sensitivity? wtf dude? Use common sense man. That'd be ok and all for a psp 2, but not a redesign.

Many people will feel cheated cause they bought an older version of the psp and here comes one thats totally different.

Guys this news is fake since, going to the source i check it out and he said this is what i gather from various sites, he is adding on several rumors together, so why even listen to this. Seriously, i say dont believe this until sony says more on the matter.

Tehmastr all of that stuff has been thought up by them and they said adding this would not be a great idea, when a psp 2 comes out possibly. Besides Your a xbox fanboy since your saying screw sony, get out of the sony fourms, your just as bad as the guy mister know it all.

 » Sony Conspiracy

Sony made the psp hackable. This is because they wanted people to buy more psps. Think people, why would such a big company let out psps with such a big flaw. I dont know if their plan is working or not, with all the umd piration. But every single firmware they release gets hacked. Most probably their just stupid.

   Re: B.B.P (Unregistered) - 2007-06-12
 » When did...?

Since when did Q.J start having retards as part of the staff team? what the posters were referring to was the previous list of what the redesigned psp's features were like(it said the psp's screen would be LED). So now before you go calling people dumb, why don't you get a better understanding of the situation.

You come out as being the dumb-ass and probably a kid who needs a smack in the face. Annoying lil piece of *****.

   Re: manaox2 (Unregistered) - 2007-06-13
 » wow

I didn't think the staff would through a temper tantrum on their own site. Of course they don't know that an OLED even psp sized would cost high in the thousands to produce. And I'm guessing this came from the previous article that needed correcting. The original poster is just making the connection that an LED screen was obviously not a feature in the first place. I don't want my psp screen looking like a litebrite.

   Re: Ryants (Unregistered) - 2007-06-13
 » OLED +> LED

OLED (Organic Light Emmiting Diodes) are LEDs (Light Emmiting Diodes) there juste organic (witch somehow makes theme thinner...)

" I think they mean LED backlit LCD's, they save on battery life and can give a brighter picture"
and Timmy, LCD (Liquid Cristal Display) don't produce any light and are alway backlit when used as screens. LEDs and LCDs are completly different...

I'M A NERD AND PRORD OF IT!!! xD

   Re: Timmy A (Unregistered) - 2007-06-13
 » To Ryants

Haha, close but no cigar. You are right in the fact that LCD's do not create light. But what I am talking about is backlit LCD screens compared to frontlit LCD screens.

Almost all LCD screens created before this year are frontlit, they are less efficient, tend to be duller and can have an inconsistent brightness over the screen. Backlit LCD screen have recently becoming popular, with new MacBook Pros as one example of this technology being used.

PSP currently uses backlit LCD screens, the badly worded article posted by QJ intends to say, "The screen is still a standard LCD screen, not LED backlit. Either way, battery-life will obviously be improved."

Please hand in your Nerd license at the door :P

And to Mabie A.: Get bent, seriously. The article was very badly worded, and caused confusion amongst the readers.

Oops, should've proof-read my post above. I meant to say that PSP's currently have a frontlit LCD screen.

I see what you meen, honestly, I never really payed much attention du the differences between front and back lit LCD screens.

Personnaly, I think Plasma screens are better (I like the contrast xD)

» TO TIMMY A (GO HUMP AN APPLE)

Is ur brain degrading TIMMY A??? The PSP has backlit not front looollll and many other gadgets i.e. cell phones had backlit LCDs since 3yrs ago at least. Sh1tty Nintend had frontlit GBA SP. Now carry on wit ur apple.

   Re: Spike (Unregistered) - 2007-06-13
 » Uhh

The PSP has had an LED backlit screen for a long time now. Try finding a CCFL inverter in a PSP, there isn't one!

   Re: Ryants (Unregistered) - 2007-06-14
 » uhh, spike...

"LED backlit screen"
LCD, not LED!!!
like I said before, LED's produce light... so there's NO POINT in theme being back or frontlit...

   Re: Timmy A (Unregistered) - 2007-06-14
 » ...

Okay, I'm going to have to explain this slowly.

Four types of LCD screens
1. Unlit LCD screen. A screen which relies on ambient light filtering through the screen to light it up. Eg calculator, GBA (orig)
2. LED Frontlit LCD screen. Same thing, except with white LED lights to the side, but slightly infront of the screen. The light filtering across the screen lights it up. Eg. Mobile phones, PSP.
3. Cathode lamp frontlit LCD screen. Same thing as #2, replace LED with a minature cathode tubes. Used in larger screens. Eg. LCD TV's, Laptops
4. LED backlit LCD screen. Same thing again, but this time the LED's are _directly behind_ the LCD screen. Eg. Macbook Pros, Rumoured PSP revision.

If you still disagree, search wikipedia for "backlight", "LED" and "LCD". EG "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlight"

There are no commercially manafactured LED screens (other than a LiteBrite :P). But recent advances in tech have made OLED (Organic LED) screens viable. These do not require front or backlighting as they produce light themselves.

The rumour for PSP applies to LED backlit LCD screen. I'd imagine that it would be very likely for Sony to include this tech in the next iteration of PSP as the price is cheaper than OLED, and current draw is less than LED frontlit LCD sceens.

I love being the only correct person on a whole forum, it makes the comments section a great read. Keep up the good work, guys.

all of the stuff that the site listed is possible this time around, unlike the last load of BS. Still though, would you really believe a site who straight up lies about having these official sources, comes out and says that the info they spread was complete BS, and then says here is the real info from once again, some made up source? This site just shot itself in the foot as the most rumor spreading site I've ever seen...they change their story every chance they get...

 » cool...

That sounds amazingly cool if it does happen, sounds possible, but not nice to the rest of us. I don't expect more than 1 GB onboard memory myself if any, but its understandable that they would give you more now that they are trying to sell PSX games and other PS3 connectivity mini things via online download. I would still not be surprised if this was once again just another online rumor brewing based on the criticisms of the last one. I think Sony already understands is that what they really need is a knockout game, not a system redesign to lose more money on. Put it in the F' an rumor category please...

the new design will have a slot-loading design which i guess will be similar to the ps3 and wii's loading system. it's gonna be a real dust collector though thanks to the huge size of the UMD casing!!
