Try PSP to MIDI While Waiting for PSP Ableton Live Controller

Since Rob King is still currently polishing his PSP Ableton Live Controller that allows you to control Ableton Live - a loop-based software music sequencer for Macintosh and Windows - wirelessly, he is releasing a "while waiting" application to keep us busy. PSP to MIDI, is a nifty little program that turns your PSP into a wireless MIDI controller and/or a wireless mouse (available only in Windows). Even if King placed it under the  "just to get something out there" category, this application is still worth a try.

Installation:
    1. Copy the psp2midi directory to your luaplayer Applications directory (usually/PSP/GAME/luaplayer/Applications)
    2. Edit the first line of INDEX.LUA in the directory you just copied to be the IP Address of your destination computer
    3. Copy psp2midi.py to a directory on your computer

Running psp2midi:
    1. From the command line go to the directory you copied psp2midi.py to and run "python psp2midi.py" (without the quotes)
    2. On your PSP run luaplayer and in luaplayer run psp2midi
    3. Choose the internet connection that your computer is connected to.
   
Using psp2midi:

psp2midi has three different modes (2 in non-windows operating systems):  Note mode, Chord mode, and Mouse mode.  When you start psp2midi it will be in chord mode.  Pressing select and the left or right trigger buttons at the same time allows you to cycle between modes (note: in this version there is not yet an indication of which mode you are in, sorry!). 

A complete how-to for the chord and mouse mode is provided in the Read Me text file that comes with the download.

Whoa, this kicks ass, but if it's possible, could you make this sort of app for reason? like just a small keyboard with maybe the nub for mod wheel and L and R for cutoff/resonance? That'd be awesome, and I wouldn't have to hook up my umx49.

This sounds kewl. btw if its a midi contoller you should be able to use it with Live, cubase, reason or any other midi apps

this is gonna be useless. why would anyone even bother making soemthing thats gonna just be intresting for about two minutes .
just get a real midi controller or use your mouse...the psp aint relly the right thing for controlling midi

whos gonna bother setting up thier sequencer and then fiddling with a psp trying to get some ***** to work when they could just use thier keynoard and mouse as perfectly fine midi controllers....a lot more butons and plus...if u r using ableton , chances are you are a keyboard anyway.

this is redundant before its even been released. what a joke.

I'm a complete fool, a wanker to say the least really. I don't appreciate the fact that people are out there coding for themselves and others applications like this which will actually make some people happy. I'd rather ignore the fact that this takes time effort and passion.

Personally I'll just sit here with my ISO collection and my loads of money (which I obviously have because I suggest anyone should BUY things rather than try and find another way) and will spit on all the good work done by anyone who can code like I can't....

Oh well... I know... I'm a joke..

Huge props for this!

We've been toying with creating an external midi controler for use with PSPKick for a bit and are excited to see someone else doing it via wi-fi.

honestly, I'm not gonna use this thing for any of my DAW's, not to mention the fact that I mostly use reason, and hardly touch ableton because it's a bit slow for me. I have quite a few midi controllers, but the only reason why i would use my psp as one would be to show off to somebody. I still appreciate the excellent work though, and who knows, maybe it could evolve into some sort of other extension, using the psp headset with an EQ/mixer homebrew program for audio recording straight to a daw via wireless would be pretty damn awesome.

dude, that's kinda of a weird idea. First, you gotta install a whole new program on your computer that is probably only usable by this. Man just look at this = http://www.psp-hacks.com/page/2/

Great work there mate! I'd kill for someone to port Serato Scratch Live onto the PSP working with the Serato box. It'd be so bazookas to carry my PSP to gigs instead of a laptop (hey, the smaller the better).

If you critisizing idiots checked the program 1st you would notice that it offers nonstandard in put methods. Using key combinations it allows you to generate and manipulate midi data. This is very, very useful and a great tool for jamming.

There are some of us who have an imagination & do not require pre made samples from which we cobble together another formulaic trance tune.

I have to agree with #18, I already have some promising plans for the livePlay application once it is released. With a open mind and some imagination you can do great things wit it (and I guess you have to be willing to risk your PSP too, at least to realize my plans, oh well).
