Arguru and PSP 3D have finally released the newest game currently in development: Turrican PSP alpha. You might remember our article about Arguru testing his 2D engine with the Turrican graphics a while back, and now the game's alpha version has been released.  Although the game needs more work as it's still in development, this clone of the popular Turrican/Metroid games is showing promise.

Turrican PSP Alpha isn't fully playable yet though, as the engine lacks some basic things like additional enemies and working level transporters, to name a few.

But like we said, this game shows promise. These are some of the features the finished version WILL have:

  • Non-linear levels that will allow players to put in links in the level maps to a specific point in that level;
  • Permanent power-up items that can also be included in the same way in level maps;
  • Items that players will need to achieve certain skills (morphing, double jump, etc.).
Turrican PSP has only been tested on 1.50 FW, and developers are not yet sure if it's going to work under GTA/eLoader. This is because of the memory requirements of the alpha release, but cutting the .WAV sound files is said to reduce RAM load.

Hopefully, the developers of Turrican PSP will be able to finish the game soon. Stick with us for more updates.

You can immediately tell if a homebrew game wasn't coded in LUA.

 » Hell yes!

I've been putting time into setting up Turrican 1 and 2 for the Atari ST emulator on the PSP only to find that without being able to remap keys to the PSP buttons, I am unable to use all commands on the fly (without getting the virtual keyboard out). Really looking forwards to this, and I think a great starting point for this project would be if they ported the levels from the original games first.

 » Errr, what happened to copyright infringing stuff not making frontpage??

LMAO - So much for the copyright infringing stuff not making it to the frontpage anymore. (http://forums.qj.net/showthread.php?t=52942)

You'd think after making a point of it in the forums QJ would at least email there bloggers to tell them to stop posting this stuff :)

Aside from that, looks great, will be trying this today!! Keep it up, I LOVE TURRICAN!!!!

Got most of the aforementioned versions of the game on my memory stick already. The one I prefer is Turrican 2 of the Amiga (best soundtrack IMO). Of course, with that far from running perfectly at the moment, I'm trying to go for the next best thing through the ST version. If only Skeezix will release a version of CaSTaway with editable button mappings so I can map the spacebar to one of the face buttons I'd be set.

@6: words from the coder in psp3d forums:

"Graphics are ripped indeed. The idea would be change all graphics into original material once this gets more polished (if someone wants to...). I'll focus the little time I have to work on it on the engine and leave content creation (mods) for others."

So FFS stop posting BS, this game it's looking ACE.
