PlayStation Portable - Image 1

One thing has led to another. Noobz and Team C+D's Pandora's Battery has opened a lot of doors for the PSP homebrew scene and it would seem that the possibilities are near endless. Flamingwolf from our forums posted a guide to running the golden firmware, 1.5, from the memory stick.

It is possible to boot firmware 1.5 from your memory stick and you'll find this nifty guide very helpful. The guide was originally written by Mathieulh. Need we say more? Here's the post ad verbatim:
  • Install the pandora firmware to the memory stick using the normal procedure.
  • Copy the files created on the memory stick somewhere on your computer
  • save your flash1 registry folder into your memory stick root
  • Extract 1.50 from a psar using psardumper.
    • extract it as encrypted and then once more as decrypted (save both dumps)
  • Copy the encrypted dump folders to the root of the MS, and get pspbtcnf.txt pspbtcnf_game.txt and pspbtcnf_updater.txt from the decrypted dump, and use those to replace the ones from the encrypted dump located at ms0:/kd/
  • Get the flashemu.prx and lfatfs_patched.prx from the pandora MS files you saved earlier (they are in the kd folder) and copy those into ms0:/kd/
  • open ms0:/kd/pspbtcnf.txt and ms0:/kd/pspbtcnf_game.txt and ms0:/kd/pspbtcnf_updater.txt files using a text editor and:
    • change /kd/lfatfs.prx to /kd/lfatfs_patched.prx
    • add /kd/flashemu.prx right after the /kd/fatmsmod.prx line.
    • save the files
  • Done, the 1.50 firmware will boot straight from the MS using the Pandora battery. Of course you may adapt this mod to another firmware such as M33.
Using Mathieulh's guide, you can basically boot any FW from your memory stick/s - that's in theory. If they find out how to do this with other FWs then it would be great for homebrew devs who want to test how their creations fare on different firmwares.

Though for now, we'll heed what Dark_AleX says about booting from the memory stick and custom firmwares. He said, "No CFW will work with this, because their kernel subset would need also a flashemu.prx. This method would only work to boot 1.50 from ms."

Well, let's hope for the best anyway. For more info, feel free to scurry over to the QJ PSP Hacks forums to discuss the tutorial.

"Game, set, and match."
would actually make sense, if I was actually trying to argue something. I asked a question. That post answers the question. The comment accompanying the link makes no sense, as we weren't playing a game, or debating anything.

The article was EDITED to mention that it only boots 1.50. It previously said you could use this with ANY firmware.

 » Cool

Maybe now future cfws will be moded so you'll be able to sitch between them, like 3.40 OE-A and M33, all by booting it off the mem stick. No more needin to Downgrade. Holy Crap!!! I just thought that if you can modifly firmwares to boot off the mem stick w/ pandora, does this mean if pandora's battery doesnt work with the slim, that we could extract PSP Slim Firmware updates on our mem sticks, and modify to boot off the fat PSP!? That would be awesome!!

   Re: df (Unregistered) - 2007-08-30
 » sdf

no u cant...the psp slim has features that make it different from the normal fat psp. so if u try to mix one hardware with another's software, u mite get f***ed.

but hey, i could be wrong. :)

Booting 1.50 off the mem stck on a slim might just crash cuz sony probly changed the PSP's idstorage entirely so it workds differently. u never know

   by Snarg (Unregistered) - 2007-08-30
 » .

I know that DA says that this will only work for 1.5, but his reasoning is because of the difference between 1.5 and CFW's
So would this not work for other official firmwares?
Yes I know you're going to ask why would you want to be on any other official firmware, but remember there are people out there who refuse to flash their PSPs, even now. (Some people like the fact that their PSPs have never been flashed), so if they could boot into 3.5x from the memory stick then they could at least play their favorite new games that they buy without having to upgrade.
Just a thought. But if it's not possible, it's no skin off my back, I have no issues with flashing my PSP.

Idiot.

They said IN THEORY it could be used with other firmwares, but not yet.

Nowhere did they claim it worked on any other FW yet.

   Re: Snarg (Unregistered) - 2007-08-30

Right, and who was arguing against that?
Your flame makes no sense. But then maybe that's the whole point.

maybe not tho

   Re: Ranguvar (Unregistered) - 2007-08-31

Yes, i was referring to FreePlay's half-assed claim.

FreePlay - "Had you bothered to continue reading what Mathieulh and Dark_AleX have said about this, ONLY 1.50 WILL WORK."

But QJ DID say - in theory. FreePlay is just being his usual flame-first-then-read self. Nothing new here.

   Re: Snarg (Unregistered) - 2007-08-31

Ah yes, in that case, then yes it does make sense. ;)

   Re: FreePlay (Unregistered) - 2007-09-03
 » Y'see, here's the thing kiddo

"They said IN THEORY it could be used with other firmwares, but not yet."

But that information was KNOWN TO BE WRONG WHEN THEY WROTE IT.

That's why QJ's writers are idiots :)

cant u already go from cfw back to 1.5 so wats big about this i really dont understand

   by NightShade15 (Unregistered) - 2007-08-30
 » well wait.

Could you possibly run the PSP this way, booting 1.5 with the Pandora's memstick trick, then trying to install a custom firmware after that?
Then this hack is ungodly, rather then having to try to brick a psp and install the firmware, insted, You get to DevHook it (Pretty much) and installing a new *firmware over an old one. (*Being the only time you had to mess with the BIOS. Multiple flashings is not something I like.) 1 flash vs 2 flashes (at min.)

   Re: 3vi1 (Unregistered) - 2007-08-31
 » feh..

Uhm... you don't have to "brick" your psp to downgrade it with the *normal* Pandora process.
   by wortmonger (Unregistered) - 2007-08-30
 » from 3.52?

Can anyone tell me if this would work from the newest official firmware or do I have to get a 1.5 unit to do the battery update (the pandora magick sh*t) and then use that? I just don't want to screw up a perfectly functional unit since I just had to replace my last one after getting stuck @ official 3.11 (I only use it for tunes and Tekken now - stupid Namco anti cheat nonsense)

   Re: Snarg (Unregistered) - 2007-08-30
 » .

This still requires an altered battery. So yes you would need a PSP that's already homebrew capable (1.5 or any CFW) in order to alter a battery for use.

Sometimes when your life is so empty and meaningless, even something as simple as being first poster can be exciting, because that's the only thing that they'll ever be first at in life, unless you count failing.
