Some people have noticed that their PSPs' UMD slots only partially close on one side. This is just a minor irritation. Personally, I'm not bothered by it. But then again, some units may have more evident misalignment problem than the others.

djzander over at the QJ forum has posted a little trick to fix this problem. It seems that the little bugger that's causing this minor irritation is a screw (marked on the pic). Taking it out enables your UMD slot to close almost perfectly. Of course, it's going to void your warranty (just thought we'd remind you).

The screw, though, is obviously there to hold some parts together, so anyone who's thinking about giving this a try better think long and hard. You might end up with more than just a voided warranty on your hands...

» has anybody tried this yet?

because the partially closing thing really does bother me. i would do this in a heartbeat, but i'm afraid of dropping my psp and it breaking in half or something. can somebody give me details on what this screw actually does?

 » What?

that just sounds stupid. ya take a screw so you're umd door will close. ( it might make you're psp explode INSTANTLY)

 » This works too.

I found that if you take a hacksaw and cut down youre psp just to the left of the [ ] button but not into the screen the door should close perfectly. of course this voids you're warrenty but at least that damn door will close proplery.

you're welcome for the tip

 » wires??

Hey whats those wires under the screen tray for? lights or something there not in any regular psp

   by akuma2099 - 2006-06-18
 » ok then

Let's just start removing screws from the PSP just to see what happens. Yea it will fix the UMD door problem but that screw is holding something together and removing it will just lead to worse problems than a slight UMD door misalignment.

 » probably nothing

it most likely wont do anything, just like if you take one screw off the back of your psp. i think its just for extra support

 » cool

personally the door thing bugs the bejeezus outta me. But I don't know if I'm willing to crack open my psp to fix it. Plus my warranty is still in effect...so for now...no but thanks for the tip.

 » .....

youd be an idiot to open up your psp and risk trashing a $250 system all just because your irritated by the umd door not closing all the way.

 » Excellent.............NOT

If you remove the screw it could mean your Psp would be more vulnerable if dropped. By the way, I have noticed that my USA Psp has a more secure UMD door on it than my Jap Psp but it could be a coincidence.

 » ...BEWARE...

That is a very tricky screw to remove, not the actual removing part but teh fact that if you ever put another similar but not the same screw in there you will DEFINATELY break your screen. For the sake of your umd drawer, just loosen the the casing screws. Hell you got the sticker off by now anyway.

 » Hmm

My UMD door is quite messed up. I actually have to take my hand and put strength into it to open the UMD door. I've already taken apart my PSP multiple times for various mods (sometiems just scouting missions) and managed to replace the warranty sticker almost flawlessly //^_ Though I'm not going to actually remove the screw till I find out what its holding on, thats what I'm going to look for later tonight (will post results later.)

dont know about the rest of you, but my UMD drawer sticks out on the other side from that screw..

   by Bel Z. Bub (Unregistered) - 2006-06-19
 » no way..

that screw got noting to do with that, besides it's too short to cause any trouble..

both my psp's close perfectly after they've been appart.. so it's probably friction caused by not tightening the screws in the right order (cross over) sony just needs to train their personel better... :)

» i need to clean my screen anyway

im gonna try it later, im just worried that itll make something more vulnerable if dropped, since i have in fact dropped my psp before. once, it fell out of my playgear from 3 feet and the umd drive stopped working for about a week. scary stuff.

   by RaiderX - 2006-06-19
» YOU GOTTA HAVE SOME REALLY BAD OCD TO DO DO THIS!

Nice find, but really...

Ive noticed my drive doesnt close all the way on one side, but thats because the little clip is more to the other side and doesnt hold against the springs on the left. but i personally could care less

 » replace the screw

dont just remove it (although only one screw) but replace it with a flat head screw thats lies flush with the board, better idea?

» Good tip and this wouldn't affect your psp

When I put a mod-chip in my ps2 I removed a couple of screws and did not pu them back and it hasn't affected it so I don't know why that screw in the psp would affect anything if it was removed.

Opening up a PSP is simple and easy..Dont fire the board and use proper precaution and youll be fine

Its not like you can ship it off to SOny anyways since theyre pricks and update the FW...

» re to number 4: wires?

the main white "wire" see in the backround is the antenna for the WiFi. some one should figure out a way to extend it without damaging the psp.

Damn do I hate the UMD drive!!! It just looks so cheap when it pops open.

   by Matt (Unregistered) - 2006-06-19
 » hehehehe

all you have to do is take out the screw and shave off a little bit of it then put it back in and voila! the back of the screw doesnt affect the UMD door and it still holds everything in place...
