UMD Movies to be region free? - Image 1 Could a region-free UMD movie be in the future of Sony's PlayStation Portable? If MTV is to be prophetic (and possibly correct) about it, then it looks like we just might.

Siliconera spotted new MTV releases that are labeled with an "All" region label instead of the usual number-system indicating the region the UMD movie is supposed to play on.

Now, nothing's been set in stone yet. For all we know, it could merely have been a packaging oversight (right, for all releases?!).  Or maybe it'll just be an MTV-exclusive thing.

We'll have to wait for more details on this one, and hopefully, Sony will speak out regarding this matter soon. In the meantime, keep those fingers crossed, and pray that these UMD movies become region-free someday, somehow.

This won't exactly save the UMD Movie format, no one gives a damn about it!

 » So

I do give a damn about UMD movies!
i love watching umd movies on my psp.
the movie quality is superb and sound is great,
umd's dont cost anything here, so i buy them aslong as they are available.

 » I liked UMD...

It's problem was price (Really should have been cheaper), content (More suited to episodic programmes?), dare I say file sharing and ever increasing memory card sizes, oh and the frankly ridiculous release schedule.

Whoever thought putting that many discs out at once was very naive to think they would all sell, especially priced more than a DVD. If you flood the market you only dilute your sales.

I still like the medium, just not how it was handled.

I agree with you, I liked the format also, Nearly scratch-resistant, relatively high capacity and a cool look.....

But sadly, Ash735 is right, the UMD format is dead, and region-free UMDs won't change that....

 » UMD's

I like movie UMD's as well I just wish there were more of them.
I'd also like to see TV series releases on UMD.

I'd buy UMD volumes of HEROs real fast.

Eureka Seven, Family Guy, Weeds ect.

We need more content.

 » um...

who cares about region? any CFW has the option for changing your region. just a fact....

» Have you ever tried it?

The region changing and region free options simply don't work. THAT'S the fact. I've played ISOs of different region movies way back when using devhook, but never the actual UMD. Just spits out errors.

» Not only is the UMD format dead, but movies on it suck

Watching a movie with the edges cut off so that it fits the screen is annoying at best. Like the others have said... this format is dead and I'm glad that it is. I am hopeful that a next Blue Ray's are supposed to include a PSP version with them.... That's the way it should've been all along.

 » Universal?

I guess now it's sticking a little bit more to its name. If Sony had put a UMD slot in the PS3 then they would have been able to push both the UMD format and the Blu-ray format at the same time. Plus, then they really would be Universal Media Disks and not just work with one piece of equipment. But I guess that would have had the potential to raise the cost of PS3 manufacturing, making the PS3 even more expensive. I think letting us save Blu-ray movies on our PSPs and calling it quits mostly for UMD is a much better idea.

 » WTF

do u no how many ppl DON'T have a ps3. ur asking us to spend $600 on a ps3 then another $100 each on 1 blu-ray movie just to get some good quality video on our psp's.i totally love umd movies they have GREAT video and sound quality. all the ppl without a ps3 or a large sized memory stick wud definetly prefer umd's (or their own converted mp4's)
