UMD movies available for US$ 5 at GameStop - Image 1

GameStop's just listed five new UMD movie titles that have just gotten huge discounts. All of these titles are now available for US$ 4.99/ That's a pretty big price drop, considering their original list price is US$ 19.99 each.

Normally, I'm not too keen on buying UMD movies even if they are on sale, but this bunch is made up of titles that are actually worth watching. There are four anime titles here: The first Ghost in the Shell movie, Ninja Scroll, the new Appleseed movie, and that classic of classics, Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira. Rounding the whole list off is George Romero's Dawn of the Dead.

GameStop's offering these titles for a quarter of their original price. It's a good deal, plus the titles are actually good, so check it out.

take a look...there are still new movies being released on UMDs and I love it when it is on sale. Just yesterday I bought FOUR movies for $20 at Circuit City thanks to QJ for the tip. Sadly it ends today and there where 2 movies I wanted which had a rating that I should not get. I never knew Bad Boys (starring Wil Smith) was R rated. I though it was PG-13. Anyway, are these movies at Gamestop really good? What's it about? (does it have action or comedy in it?)

 » Australian comparison.

Harvey Normans in Australia currently has UMDs for $7 and they are marked as originally being $40. Thats 17% of the original price.
Pity my Canadian PSP can't play them. (tried it through OE but wouldn't work)

maybe 5$, but their international shipping is around 25 bucks for france LOOL. C'mon, they're sending a 1 UMD in its box, not 3kg of instable platic
Bull***** offers, interesting for US only, as usual.

they would have sold well. But this is just gamestop trying to get rid of them because they need to make some money back on them.

 » Worst release ever

I bought Akira UMD movie long ago. It has no subs, only dubbed audio track, and it's cropped to 4:3 for optimum viewing on a widescreen-only device :-)

Just letting you know... Don't know if it's just me, but I rather watch a rip of the original DVD, scaled & cropped from original size to 480x272, with subs and original language audio.

 » THANK YOU!!

that was my first concern. i hate dubbed anime, although subtitles on a PSP screen aren't much better... my DVD is REdubbed (they did an even worse job the 2nd time) (and Kaneda doesn't sound like Leonardo anymore) (lol)
I wonder if the UMD uses the original english dub...? :P

Yet again QJ.net rips off other websites without giving them credit. Yet again, you've given no credit to Cheap Ass Gamer for breaking a deal. You all make Kotaku look respectable.

"it's cropped to 4:3 for optimum viewing on a widescreen-only device :-)"

You do realize 4:3 is NOT widescreen, so it would not be optimal for a widescreen-only device.. that would be 16:9.

» umd sucks, especially with DAX stuff

I bought a used PSP and the UMD drive toasted after I had it for 4 months.

Anyways, it's way better to throw in a DVD (or divx or whatever), encode to full h.264 at 480x272, put it on a memory stick and play it that way. Doesn't kill the battery like spinning a UMD does and you don't have to buy yet another stupid format.

Without Dark Alex my psp would be even more a piece of junk.

That's why you should buy it new ;) I've had mine for almost a year, and I've played hundreds of hours worth on my 49 UMD games. I guess that's what you get for buying it used :p I've seen too many people pick up a PSP for around $180...to me, its like, spend the extra twenty bucks and buy one new and ensure it works! My bro was lucky enough to get his for $160 at circuit city though (thanks to a coupon), but I'd seriously never buy a system like the PSP used...you never know how the person/people before you treated it ;)

 » hmm

hmm, sorry, by "original" I meant original concepts, types of games, as for not-another-ps2 cheap adaptation ;)

As for "original" + newly bought, I just cannot stand second hand things. I care very much what I buy, and I'd rather spend twice as much but get a new game. kind of compulsive maybe XD

Looks like they killed the sale already. None of the UMDs mentioned are for 5 bucks anymore.

» ...The Gamestops around here (Ohio)...

have so many UMD movies it isn't funny. They have a huge assortment of them along the wall. Four columns high (which may not seem like that much, but it is more than most places have).

» Anime UMD's: STAY AWAY! VERY AWFUL!

I bought the Ghost in the Shell UMD last December for ten bucks, and brought it right back after I discovered that the audio track was SO soft that it was unlistenable. Even in a quiet room, the ambient noise of ventilation would make the movie hard to hear. Even boosting the audio using the PSP amplifier didn't help make it any better. Avoid like the plague.

» umd is the ***** (on planes)

UMDs may be useless in your everyday life. But they are great to buy for plane trips. I just bought casino royale, which Im going to use on my flight later today. Its good to see they are constantly releasing new movies.

Im watching X3, or Borat on my flight back...
