Ó

Pspgps3487A little over a year ago before the PSP was launched in the US, an incomplete “experimental” firmware version was leaked onto the web. It was non-functional but seemed to have a lot of intended features included such as a web browser, email client, and word processor. It took a long time for the web browser to surface, but according to a sneak peak of the March issue of Playstation Magazine (thanks to PSp2gamers) an email client will be included in an upcoming firmware update.

“PSM has learned from sources familiar with the PSP’s U.S. product management that one new firmware-enabled update will be called Sony Mail. The built-in email program will use the unique ID number assigned to each PSP at manufacture to eliminate a potentially confusing server setup. The program won’t require users to access a web site, but will let them choose a unique user name to associate with their PSP’s ID.

“Further down the line, but still slated for this year, Sony will release its GPS (global positioning system) add-on for PSP that was first shown at E3 2004. The yet-to-be-priced package will include the actual GPS peripheral, which connects to the top of the PSP via the USB 2.0 port, and a UMD containing navigation software and street data. Regular updates to the street data will be rolled out on subsequent UMD’s for an additional price.”

Thanks for the email, Sam!

GPS Sounds good but I bet it will end up costing as much as an actual GPS Map / Directions device or close...

GPS..... drools.... but then I won't be able to use homebrew... I think I buy a bluetooth GPS adapter for my phone instead...

How lame is it that we woeuld need to buy another new umd for map updates. The updates should be free or atleast downloadable via the web broweser for a nominal fee

Umm... Yeah. While looking through the dumped FW 1.0, I found a bunch of securtiy certificates with the actual word," EMAIL," in them multiple times. I thought everyone else did the same?

Ah good, new features = potential new security holes through which we can allow homebrew in case Sony force Rockstar to fix the save bug in GTA.

it;s so stupid when people say stuff like "satalite internet" that will never happen because that means anyone with a wireless reciever can get free internet

its so stupid when people say stuff and dont know what they are talking about

satalite internet would be set up just like cell phones are, where you need a subscription to use it....

i'm willing to spend like $70-90 on this thing if it works; $90 meaning if it has a lot of stuff i want in a gps system otherwise $70 to 'try' it if the GPS features aren't so great.

Hey n00bs!

There's no such thing as satalite internet, at least trough a GPS, witch is "Global Posisioning System"¨. The only thing it possibly can do is (what the name says) is send posisions to your PSP!!!

Still kinda nice tho...

DEAR SONY,

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU CREATE THE SOFTWARE/FIRMWARE SO THAT YOU CAN USE THE GPS NAVIGATION CONCURRENTLY WITH THE ABILITY TO LISTEN TO MP3'S. WHEN THE TURN-BY-TURN, VOICE-PROMPTED NAVIGATION SOUNDS (YOU NEED TO HAVE THIS TOO, PLEASE) THE MP3/SONG SHOULD DIM IN NOISE AND RESUME TO REGULAR VOLUME WHEN THE VOICE ENDS....ON BEHALF OF THE WHOLE PSP COMMUNITY, TRUST ME WHEN I SAY YOU WILL SELL FAR MORE PSPS AND NAVIGATION THAN YOU COULD IMAGINE....

And now, the obligatory negative comment...

OK, the web browser is pretty good and gives me reason to update to 2.0 temporarily, but the rest of these features would not give me the desire to update to a higher firmware version. Of course, if there was flash game support and a keyboard attachment available at local stores that works with the web browser and the word processor (if it is added to a future firmware version), then I would possibly feel the urge to update just to be able to use it. That is, when I grow tired of playing with the emulators and 3d shooters that have already been ported to the psp in between playing the wide array of games that require 2.0 or below...Aww, to hell with it, I will just wait until one of the genius programmers in this "scene" creates a word processor that can use the keyboard attachment.

As for the gps attachment, it would be a nifty and very useful gadget. If it comes with north american road maps and a feature that allows entering a location and being given driving directions to that location, then I will definitely purchase a second psp and update it for the purpose of using this peripheral alone. Hell, I will permanently mount it on the car's dashboard.
