Ó

It looks like Sony had a business briefing in which they announced their upcoming firmware releases for 2006. As we reported earlier in regards to the new firmware update, some are old advertised features / updates, and a few are new.

Spring

  • Macromedia Flash support
  • RSS Channel (audio download)
  • Chinese font set
  • Camera/GPS library
Summer
  • RSS Channel (video)
  • Expansion of UMD video profiles
Autumn (between September 6th and October 6th)
  • Memory Stick Boot
  • Voice over IP
  • Network support
Also, the Camera will be released on September 6th while the GPS will be released on October 6th. Thank you to gareth72 for the heads up!

ok these terms are vague. all I care about... The one thing I care about... is getting this damn PSP to work on my university network! Does "Network Support" mean VPN connection support, because if it does then that will be the tipping point as to when I would cast off out of firmware 1.5 land and go foth to the inevidible and upgrade to version 3.5. GPS is a stupid feature they have it on new verizon phones, it better on the phone because A. It has talking feature. B Data is stored on verizon servers, therefore you dont need 400$ 4 GB memstickduo that hasnt come out yet and wont depreciate til the PSP 2 comes out which will have a hard drive anyway so basically now you should just sell your PSP on eBay now and wait for PSP 2 if you want GPS so bad in 2008 and dont have a cell phone from verizon or whereever else. As for the camera feature I think that the only good game that could come out would be connecting to a hooker that you can chat with on the cheap in some far off foriegn country. Basically other then that this feature sucks.

Well Based On The Distance Between Sept 6(Cam Release) And Oct(GPS Release) I've Figured That The Next Network Update Will Be Around July 6th

 » In my humble opinion...

If the flash support supports flash games with full sound support and the ability to map keystrokes to buttons on the PSP (and decent compatibility, of course)then I will definitely update, eloader or no eloader. When I get bored of that I can always use my spare used 1.5 PSP to play homebrew games again. But chances are SONY will not have implemented these features (yet) so I may not do so. I sure as hell hope SONY considers allowing decent controls for flash games because that would be a great alternative to homebrew which still allows people to create decent free content and would not allow any form of piracy.

As for the "PS1 emulator", if I wanted a portable version of a PS1 I would not bother waiting, I could always purchase a GP2X system which has a good PS1 emulator available and no need to re-purchase games I already own. Also, i will be interested in finding out how SONY intends to keep people from pirating games that are supposed to be played from the memory stick. Of course, if SONY is willing to encrypt some freeware to a format that will work on 3.X PSPs and allow people to download the converted version for free (as if that will ever happen, but wishful thinking never hurt anybody) then I would think more highly of this feature.

As for the camera, it would be a fun novelty if it has content disstributed with it that is similar to the eye toy and I hope the PSP will eventually have a messenger feature that will allow using the web cam while contacting people over MSN Messenger and AIM protocols. That would make it an almost must have item.

And last but not least, the GPS. This would be a nifty tool to use with a PSP system but the price better be very competitive compared to other GPS systems, I have seen a GPS that utilizes road maps and does not require payment to any services for $450 in some stores and am not really in the market for a GPS at this point.

As far as voice over IP is concerned, it would only be practical for me if it worked outside of wifi hotspots. I have a readily accesible cell phone so I have no need to use something of this nature. However, if a chat program that incorporated this feature (and still works with internet chat protocols) were added to the PSP, then I suppose it can be useful.

 » Q

Hope we'll get the camera specification soon... will it even be able to shoot stills/videos? (video chat is not equal to "video recording")

If not - I may sell my unit...

 » Well...

I just want some Playstation games, I'll upgrade for that.

 » i can c it now

the psp cam wont be all that bad unless you love homebrew, because i can bet tekken gold that you will have to update the firmware for it to work....

 » Read my Mind!

Wow! All this right after I woke up and thought "Hmm, here I am in April, with a PSP that hasn't been updated in a long time. Come on Sony, tell me whn the next update will be!" It's all thanks to Sony's BrainWAVE XMitter Portable, FW 3.21502. Good thing they can read my mind! :P

 » UPDATES! DAMN!!!

I want the PS1 emulator, but If that will cost too much will be just a friggin' waste, In that case I would update only if there's a GTA eLoader (or any other game, I don't care)

 » Flash Player?

With the flash player does that mean we can play flash games like N? If so that would be sweet---many probally would update so they can make flash homebrew games.
