deniskaTo say that Deniska's GPS/Mapviewer for the PSP is a hit is an understatement. More like a big, big, big hit. It also generated a lot of questions from PSP users on how to use this homebrew app. The talented and generous Deniska issued this tutorial to help all you directionally-challenged people from getting lost:

The map viewer package includes the cygwin script (in the scripts) to get the maps for any given GPS coordinate:
./getmap.sh [latitude] [longitude] [base zoom] [size]

  • The script takes 4 arguments. You can find out the latitude/longitude of the area you want by using following tool: http://www.mapki.com/wiki/Get_Lon_Lat
  • Base zoom [0-16] corresponds to the values of the zoom bar on that tools map (0 being the most detailed map)
  • Size is the number of the maps 256 pixel segments. Size 16 will create a base map 4096x4096 pixels. Displaying maps, large than 4096x4096 will suck up all the PSP's browser memory.
Once you have completed the above, you need to install cygwin from http://cygwin.com/. As a working sample Deniska used a pre-made map (generated with the getmap.sh script) which you can load and practice on:
  • Create a folder /WEB in the root of your PSP's memory stick
  • Download a small map of center of Paris from: http://deniska.dcemu.co.uk/bin/_PARI....34497_16x.zip (paste the link in to your browser if it does not work directly)
  • Unzip the map into to the WEB folder
  • The WEB folder should have 1x, 2x, 4x... folders in it, as well as 1x.html 2x.html...8x.html files...
  • Open PSP's web browser and type in following URL: file:/WEB/8x.html
If you did it correctly, you should be able to see the saved map.
  • Click on the map to zoom in or use LEFT TRIGGER to go back & zoom out. Use directional buttons to move up/down/left/right on the map.
There you go. Thanks to Deniska and your PSP, you will be able to find your way home like a homing pigeon or track down the house of the girl you like so much.

Do you see your actual position with this app or it's just like you're moving yourself on a map to find the right way?

 » some tips

ya you can.. the wifi downloader works great.

cygwin was a bit tough to get working, and it helps to know a little linux to get it rolling, heres my tips

DL cygwin and install it
DL wget and bc (google em up)
dump the zips inot the main bin.. not the userbin (ie the .exe files)
run the scripts

the logitude/lat is not the center point of the map but rater the top right corner, so some mokeying around is required to pull a map correcly.

enjoy this kickass program, its amazing!

 » Hot App.

This App is amazing... it would be cool if a custom firmware could be created to make the psp start up as a GPS dev only and then switch back (but that’s just a dream) anyways, it would also be cool if we could use four points on a map to get an entire certain region.

Keep up the good work

 » absolute con

in your last post about this you's made it sound like our psp was gps ready, like *****e was it.

and now you're praising this app again...fair enough it may work but yes, who has wireless internet whilst driving.

and ffs, full page adverts when trying to see comments, you guys must be rolling in it, I'm taking my business elsewhere, psp-hacks.com, maybe they'll have less ads, and they're not afraid of iso loading.

bye bye

Just wondering, so, you have to get individual maps for city's, you cant get a map for the whole of the UK/England ? - Down to street level of course hehe

THanks, will there be a postcode kind of search soon? Like from A-->b type of thing? Then directions, turn right here etc... ?

Thanks....BEAT TOMTOM!

» How does this work on 1.5

I want to try this app, looks awesome and useful.
Few questions:

1) 1.5 has no browser, in the readme you using the browser for everyting, how does that work? is it not for 1.5?

2)Do you have to extract the scripts folder onto your psp and run them from there or on your pc?

seems a little complicated, but I really want to try it.
Any chance of getting a more detailed tutorial on maps?
getting them and how to use them?

 » psp.connect.com videos

The videos I downloaded from psp.connect.com still need to be converted before my PSP recognizes them. What's the point of this site? I thought they'd be in PSP format already.

 » some help

13) no you don't need the reciever, its works GREAT just viewing the maps on its own.. GPS will just track you position on these maps. You can use other recievers guy said, but need to edit the config to suite you module (could be tough)

14) maps Need to be DL'd on you PSP (using program) or on your computer (using cygwin)

15) "browser" refers to teh program.. you can also use the web browser to view the maps that cygwin exports using the extra script provided.

dump the scripts into you "home" directory in cygwin once its installed on your PC.. You also NEED "wget" and "bc" google these bad boys and install them to the "bin" direcotry (theres a bunch of other .exe files there)

now boot cygwin and run the scripts.. type "ls" to list the files if you can't remember the name of the script.. sit back and watch it download, now you are cooken

16) ya there needs to be more description on how to get cygwin setup, its confusing as hell to get going, a prepackaged program all setup with the scripts would be nice QJ admins...

 » ./

copy the script folder to your cygwin home folder
use "cd scripts" to change the dir
use "./sript.sh" (e.g. "./getmaps.sh") to start the script.

 » Still doesn't work

I copied the script folder and ran the getmap.sh script but I like 300lines of errors saying something like
"/usr/bin/getmap.sh: line##: wget: command not found"

mayb something to do with installing wget properly? im so confused :(

 » same problem

first i get some bc command not found errors and then this wget command not found errors.
Are wget and bc not included in cygwin?
How to install them manually?

   by gabe (Unregistered) - 2006-08-20
 » Cygwin

You can choose to install them manually when you install Cygwin, just tick the box or whatever it is during installation of components
However I still can't get it to work :
