Shareware Cave Story

Just last week, developer Variant Interactive announced that Cave Story will be coming to the PSP. Now we receive a bulk of new information straight from Variant themselves.

Here's a li'l back story: it debuted as a freeware sidescrolling adventure game for the PC. After the announcement of Cave Story for the PSP, a fan contacted Pixel, the Japanese guy who created Cave Story. The fan allegedly received an e-mail saying that Variant wasn't allowed to make Cave Story for the PSP...but the info was wrong.

The truth is, Pixel doesn't speak very good English, and for this reason he mistakenly told the fan that Variant did not get his permission for Cave Story PSP. Christopher Boyer, CEO of Variant Interactive said, "We are clearing each and every step with Pixel before we move forward on just about anything, and are about to wrap up an early build for him to preview and put his OK stamp on."He also confirmed that Pixel would be getting a reasonable sum of money for allowing the port.

Boyer also said that they would keep the game relatively the same as the freeware version, but will tend to a few graphical improvements in order to make the game appeal to more gamers. They are looking to put in some modern graphics into the main version, but also keep the retro version playable as a supplement to the main game.

Glad to see that they're indeed confirming this great title coming to PSP. =) It's great they'll be updating the graphics, but it's even better that they're including the original, unmodified version. ^^ (As far as i'm concerned anyway)

yeah, the hell ending pissed me off. Couldn't pass it :(.

If it came out on PSP I will buy it for sure. A homebrew version would have been possible, though. This is sort of old news though.

So Pixel's getting money for this...that's good. But what's going on as far as the translation? Remember that Cave Story was originally Japanese-only, and can only be played in English thanks to the efforts of Aeon Genesis Translations. Will Aeon Genesis' translation be used for this port (and consequently, will they be paid for it) or is Variant Interactive going to re-translate the game for their port?

 » Hrm...

It would be nice if Aeon Genesis got royalties (they made a fantastic translation), but I wouldn't be surprised if Variant did their own. The business side of things always suck.

In fact, I'm kinda disappointed there isn't more apparent effort to "add" to the game. The updated graphics are a plus (as long as the retro "cuteness" is somehow maintained -- that's part of the game's entire appeal), but maybe some more secret areas, optional side-quests, etc. could be added. I know that Pixel has pretty much put the game behind him now, so I don't honestly expect any of these things to become reality.

This entire effort is one big balancing act between the opportunity to add improvements and the preservation of what many already consider gaming perfection.

» When freeware games go commercial..

Just strikes me as kind of a *****ty concept...I'm sure if it's a first on the PSP, it's still not the first time it's happened, though I can't think of another example...A game that's been around for a while and available for FREE on your PC is going to come out on a UMD that'll likely cost a minimum of 20 USD? YAY! Someone should bust out a homebrew version of this...Shoot, y'know, I haven't checked gp32x or whatever, in a while, maybe there's already a version out there for that...

» Freeware games HAVE gone successfully commercial.

Every Extend is a free PC homebrew game. It got picked up by Q, and is now a fantastic PSP game.
