Lead Designer of Wipeout Pulse speaks on the game - Image 1A lot of people remember WipEout Pure on the PSP very fondly. Some have even called it one of the highlights of the early PSP catalogue of games. If you've been looking for more, don't worry as WipEout Pulse is slated to be out this September.

So what can we expect from this latest iteration of the WipEout series? Game lead designer Colin Berry was recently interviewed by IGN and gave a few details fans might be interested in knowing.

First up, he discussed the difficulty of this game in relation to WipEout Pure. Like most games, SCE Studios Liverpool noted that some players found it either too easy or too hard. Well, they've been listening to their fans and addressed the issue,

We have introduced 3 difficulty settings in addition to the speed classes. The default setting is designed for the majority to provide an "achievable" challenge. We then have an easier setting which will allow players to play at the higher speed classes against less competitive AI, thus they can enjoy the speed of the game without always feeling they have no chance to compete.

Then we have the hard difficulty setting which means that even on the slower speed classes, the hardcore WipEout fans will face a challenge from the AI, and at the higher speed classes they have something to keep them coming back again and again.

Another issue he discussed was the presence of classic tracks in Pulse. You might be a bit disappointed to find out that they did not include any. However, Berry did say that they wanted to focus on getting out some new content for the game.

The lead designer then added that there might be a chance that the much-loved old tracks will be made available to players as downloadable content - if there is enough community support for it.

Finally, he talked about the music WipEout Pulse. Licensed music tracks are pretty much a tradition in this franchise, and it appears they won't be disappointing anyone with their selections. Berry let slip that the game will have 16 licensed songs from a range of "top artists." He also gave word that legendary German band Kraftwerk will be one of the artists, so you can expect a totally ripping soundtrack.

Will this game redefine high-speed futuristic racing on the PSP? We won't know until it comes out, but it' shaping up to be quite a title. If you want to read the entire interview, don't hesitate to click on our Read link. Be sure to keep checking back here for more updates on WipEout Pulse.

First glimpses - Image 1

Just a couple of days after Sony Computer Entertainment Liverpool has confirmed the resurrection of the classic racing game WipEout for the PSP and the PS3, out comes these screenshots. We're not complaining at all, and it's all quite the opposite as we join millions of nostalgic gamers in celebrating the return of this well-loved title.

The developers of this game have not yet announced a release date for this title but at least these screenshots, the very first batch for this new title, reaffirm the sequel's existence, and could very well be a sign of even more good things to come.

And that makes three - Image 1And that makes three - Image 2

Pure Wipeout

The folks at Sony Computer Entertainment posted an announcement at their site informing the unwashed masses that they will be providing no downloadable content for Wipeout Pure after October.

The downloadable content for the PSP Greatest Hits combat racing title essentially doubled game-time, making Wipeout Pure one of the PSP games that gave you the most bang for your buck. Add the bonus content to its other features, its amazing multiplayer, and its customization capabilities and you've got a good deal.

Don't take my word when it comes to the game's greatness. Gamespot, IGN, and Game Edge magazine have this game rated at 8 and higher. A  score of 8 is what anyone would call decent, right? Take the decent score of 8, add the 9 Expansion Packs from Classic to Wire05, add in the Greatest Hits price, and what have you got? Obvious must-have.

Unless of course you absolutely hate floaty futuristic cars that kill each other while racing. Then you'd be happy that they're no longer making Packs.

The official information we have so far is only for Japan, but it's probably unlikely that we'll see bonus content for Wipeout Pure past October. The bright side of this is that hopefully they're working on a sequel. Or maybe even a PS3 version of the game. That makes you feel all warm and fuzzy don't it?

LuminesIn a press release, Sony revealed the second wave of Greatest Hits games that will hit the PSP later this year. The first wave will launch tomorow, as reported earlier. Ace Escape: On the Loose, ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails, Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee, Twisted Metal: Head On and Wipeout Pure make up the first wave. Many people were disappointed that some popular titles like Lumines wouldn't be making the cut. Well, Sony has fixed that! The second wave games are as follows:
All Greatest Hits games will retail for $19.99 in the USA. Retailers in Canada seem to live in 2001 when it comes to exchange rates, so expect $29.99 or $24.99 if we're lucky.

Along with the press release came the information that "With more than 5 million units sold, the PSP system remains North America’s top-selling next-generation handheld in the period since its record-setting launch in March 2005." I'm just noting this because it's the most creative marketing spin I've ever seen in a press release. In one sentence, Sony has added enough restrictions to give the idea that PSP is the dominant handheld in the continent! I know some of you are thinking "Shipped vs Sold?" but that's not the case. Sony has sold 5 million since its launch in March. However, that's the thing! "Period since [sic] March 2005" means that November 2004 - April 2005, in which the DS sold 1,651,786 units, is not counted. Also, they say "next-generation handheld" to exclude the GBA which has surprisingly outsold the DS and PSP since March! Again, very creative people in marketing. They deserve a raise or something!

PSP Greatest HitsThis piece of info has been known for quite some time now but since the 25th is just five days away, we figured now would be a good time to remind people of the upcoming release of the first "Greatest Hits" collection for the Sony PSP.

Here are the games slated to be released as part of the first "Greatest Hits" collection:
  • Ape Escape: On The Loose - A game that's very reminiscent of Donkey Kong. But then again, pretty much all monkey games remind me of Donkey Kong. Anyway, in this one, the player is faced with the challenge of capturing more than 200 monkeys in eight worlds spanning more than 20 levels in order to prevent them from changing history. It's also got multi-player functionality as well as extra mini-games for players of all ages.
  • ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails - This one's a free-roaming off-road racing game with more than 30 unique environments and more than 24 highly detailed ATVs available. ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails also offers six distinct terrain types including snow, dirt, mud, ice, water, and grass. Up to four players can be supported via wireless multiplayer connectivity. The game also has several gameplay options including a training course, different race modes such as race, freestyle, and career, and various mini-games.
  • Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee - Part of the multimillion-unit-selling Hot Shots Golf franchise, Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee features six all-new courses and an all-new character customization feature that includes over 250 customizable body parts, accessories, clubs, and balls. The game also has an intuitive growth system that allows virtual golfers to improve their character's experience and abilities by spending more time on the greens. Multiplayer options include two-person matches, eight-person tournaments, and two-person miniature golf rounds.
  • Twisted Metal: Head On - We're heading off the off-road track and getting back onto concrete as Incognito Entertainment serves us another helping of destruction courtesy of Sweet Tooth and his "friends". Twisted Metal: Head On can support up to six players via wireless multiplayer connectivity, and gamers can either go head to head or compete against AI-controlled vehicles. Various power-ups litter each of the 12 arenas available in this awesome little game, letting players vent their road rage out on their opponents using weapons ranging from machine guns to unique vehicle attacks. And if you ever run out of ammo, don't forget: your vehicle is a weapon too.
  • Wipeout Pure - So far, Wipeout Pure is the only game on the "Greatest Hits" roster without a colon in its title. This combat racing title lets up to eight players battle each other via a Wi-Fi link. Players can also choose to compete against AI-controlled opponents and blast their way to the top. Downloadable content, including new tracks, ships, skins and music, can be downloaded to a Memory Stick Duo to expand the racing experience and allow for personalization of the game.

Well, there it is. If any of you guys fancy trying out any of these PSP games, we suggest you just wait a few days and buy the "Greatest Hits" pack when it's released. Five good games for a suggested retail price of $19.99 is a pretty good bargain. Also, watch out for more games to be added to the "Greatest Hits" roster in the near future.
