ZX SpectrumHomebrew developer for the PSP, chui, has recently released the second alpha of his ZX-Spectrum emulator called ZX4ALL. Before we delve deep into the emulator, let's have a short walk down memory lane first and try to remember what ZX-Spectrum is. This was a home computer released in the U.K. in the year 1982 and was made by Sinclair Research Ltd. If the U.S. had a Commodore 64, Brits has the ZX- Spectrum.

Some of the games that could be played in this machine are 3D Deathchase, Elite, RoboCop, and All or Nothing among many other titles. Unfortunately, it was discontinued in 1990.

Now back to the present times and to chui'S ZX4ALL. You may know the dev as one of those helpful people who slaved to bring us MAME4ALL for the PSP. Anyway, ZX4ALL is an open source ZX-Spectrum emulator. Chui shares that he is also preparing a new NEO4ALL and DCASTAWAY releases for next week. And with all that aptly mentioned, we bring to you the changelog for this second alpha release.

Changelog
  • Faze Zilog Z80 core.
  • Virtual tape for loading tape images.
  • More options: model, joystick, etc..

HexDump and ryosaebaa have provided the latest version of their PSPectrum ZX Spectrum Emulator (this enabled late 1970s arcade games to be played at home). They have chosen to port these the more famous Speccy/Z80 emulators for PC from scratch, and have since then updated their ported emulator.

PSPectrum Version 1.0.4 has been released with cool updates such as improved compatibility and improved timing problems, Savestates, and AY-3 emulation, among other things. Hopefully, there will be more updates with the next versions of this emulator.

Here's something for all you veteran Spectrum fans: Hexdump has released version 0.2 of his Spectrum Z80 emulator for the PSP, called PSPectrum. PSPectrum allows you to play all your favourite Spectrum games on your PSP. Here's what Hexdump said:

"PSPectrum is a Spectrum emulator for the PSP. It is far from perfect but it runs almost 90% of 48k/128k games and also has sound (only 48k by now).  About 4 months of developing has been needed to bring this emulator to the PSP. I could have chosen to port one of the well known Speccy/Z80 emulators for PC, but I preferred to start it from scratch because is something I always wanted to do."

This version has many features, including:
  • 3 Different screen sizes with filter, everything working in hardware mode.
  • Fully re-mapable PSP buttons
  • Screenshot support (1 per game).
  • ZIP support.
  • Almost perfect 48k Sound
  • New fast Blend rendering for keyboards, which doesn´t affect frame rate
  • GUI code rewritten to allow pressable options. Now pages are scrollable, and has been added a new look and feel.
  • Possibility to save different configurations for every game.
The emulator currently supports the .Z80 and .SNA formats.PSPectrum comes formatted for 1.5, and has not been tested on 2.0-2.6 using the eLoader.

ryosaebaa has emailed us to let us know about the newest emulator to hit the scene, the ZX Spectrum, aka PSPectrum v0.1. The ZX Spectrum (nicknamed the Speccy), was an 8-bit home computer games system that enabled the late 1970's arcade games to be played in the home. Except for the MK14, ZX Spectrums were initially produced by a company named Sinclair Research. This emulator was created by HexDump and ryosaebaa from Spain. Here?s what they had to say about it: ?

PSPectrum is a Spectrum emulator for psp. It is far from perfect but it runs
almost 95% of 48k/128k games and also has sound (only 48k by now).

About 4 moths of developing has been needed to bring this emulator to the psp.
I could have chosen to port one of the well known Speccy/Z80 emulators for PC, but
I preferred to start it from scratch because is something I always wanted to do. So,
don´t blame me for it :D.

Only .Z80 and .SNA support by now.

The emulator is really easy to use. Every screen has info about what buttons are
used and what they do. The only screen that doesn´t have this is the main emulation
screen (yeah, where you play), so here are some indications:
-> R: Show Keyboard
-> L: Show menus
-> SELECT: Show file selector.?

Plus2.rom and 48.rom are not included for legal reasons.

You can get it in our PSP Download section [here].
Please report bugs on their website [here].
Thanks for the email and this awesome emulator guys, great job! =)

Hscbaj from our forums has come up with a great idea to run the ZX Spectrum emulator through the VBA emulator. This will open the door for so many more games to be played once the VBA emulator is improved (though it already allows for much more use of it).

Check out the details in his forum post here.
