The last time we heard from Greg Rucka and his involvement in Sony's Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, we got to know a bit about game's themes as well as how espionage itself is viewed in both the game and real life. Now, through this video interview of the writer himself, he fills us in on what sort of treatment he gave Syphon Filter's story, as well as his reactions in playing his very own video game.
In the interview, Greg Rucka admits that he's more of a character-driven writer - he makes the characters drive the plot than the other way around. This is what he did with Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, bringing Gabe into conflict with the game's main cast and making it affect not only Gabe but also how the game plays. Awesome. Near the end of the interview, he describes how great it was to play a game that he helped develop. He also mentions how his seven-year-old son asked if he could play it, to which he wisely replied, "No. It has shooting. You're seven. You can't shoot yet." Smooth, Greg. Watch the embed below for more details (as well as awesome gameplay bits). Enjoy! |

With the release of Sony Bend's Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow
coming up fast, Sony has let loose another batch of screenshots from
the game. Before we get to them though, here's a quick backgrounder on
the game.In this follow-up to Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, things are looking pretty grim for Gabe Logan. The IPCA is facing closure due to a failed mission and Gabe's partner Lian Xing has disappeared, leading to suspicion of her being a double agent. Gabe's not gonna leave things as they are, though, so he goes solo to find Lian and retrieve some stolen tech. With that out of the way, let's get back to the screenshots. We've categorized them according to which gameplay mode they're taken from - the game's single-player campaign and the multiplayer mode. Check 'em out below. Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow is scheduled for an October 2 release. Check out all the screenshots behind the Full Article link! |

IGN posted a dozen new screenshots of Sony Bend's upcoming Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow. The game is looking as impressive as we've seen before, featuring series hero Gabe Logan in action. The premise of Logan's Shadow is simple: The agency he works for gets shut down due to a failed mission where a naval cargo ship gets robbed of important technology. Suspicions are high among the higher-ups and all indications point to Lian Xing, Gabe's long-time partner. Lian Xing mysteriously vanishes, further driving the notion that she's a double agent. Desperate for answers, Gabe sets out on an independent mission to find his friend and secure the lost cargo. Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow is a Sony PSP exclusive. More Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow screens after the jump! |

An interesting entry recently appeared over at the official site of Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) regarding the Syphon Filter franchise and a seemingly new game called Syphon Filter: Combat Ops. It already has a rating, T for violence, and its publisher is going to be Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA).
However, one should take note that there's more to this than meets the eye. It is easy to assume that Combat Ops is going to be another iteration in the franchise. But we tried searching for Logan's Shadow - lo and behold - it's not listed at all in ESRB's database. We're thinking that this could be a new subtitle for Logan's Shadow. It is also possible that ESRB hasn't updated its database and Combat Ops is nothing more but a WIP title for Logan's Shadow before it was officially announced by SCEA. At any rate, the entry is indeed interesting and rouse some curiosity among us. What do you think guys? Just a new or old name, or a whole new adventure all together? |

The last we heard about Gabe and his latest adventure on the PlayStation Portable, we found out that Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow is pretty much going to take full advantage of the gadget's resources, making for better-looking gunplay and smoother stealth-sneaking. We get that and some multiplayer action on the side with this huge screenshot update of the game that has Gabe up against pretty much every armed Tango out to get him. In this huge load of eye candy, we get a look at the other places Gabe will be skulking around in, and it's a great diversion from all the scenes where we see him sneaking around in a tanker. We also get a sneak peek at the many outfits (probably character models) you'll be able to don during multiplayer games, as well as an unintentionally funny picture of someone blowing himself up. Let's hope it's as fun as the multiplayer option in the old PlayStation One title. Ah, run-by knifings. Updates as we get them, and enjoy the screenshots! |

Sony Bend's Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow on the PSP has been getting quite a bit of publicity. This sequel to Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror looks to offer more of the same great gameplay and storyline, crafted by none other than Greg Rucka. If you haven't heard of him, Greg Rucka is a writer of comic books and novels known for his work on Atticus Kodiak, the DC Checkmate series, Adventures of Superman and Wonder Woman, as well as a few runs with Marvel's Wolverine, and Elektra. He had quite a few things to say on the game as well as the themes that it explores: We [the developers and himself] tried to put something that I love in my videogames into it, which was some emotional investment -- that you cared about what was going on. That there was a reason that you gave a damn about what Gabe (the main character of the game) was doing. If you're familiar with Syphon Filter, you'll probably know that espionage plays a very important part to its storyline and gameplay. Rucka touched on this subject and how he would like it to be tackled in Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow. He noted the deeper implications of espionage and it being a tool used by governments: It's all a question of how espionage is actually a tool of politics. Espionage doesn't exist in a vacuum. So that, and again talking about the relationship that Gabe had with the other characters, was how we ended up where we were. With genius Rucka calling the shots, the game appears to be developing a very interesting and engaging storyline. Will it live up to the high bar its predecessors have set before it? We'll have to wait and see. If you want to read the full interview, click on our read link. |

Gabe's back in the fray and he's looking better than ever in this gameplay video update of SCEA's Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow. Complete with his trademark buzzcut and bad-ass gravelly voice, the guy can still take down any heavily-armed tango with a couple of shots from his handy pistol despite having a name that's rather metrosexual-ish. Awesome.
One thing yours truly immediately noticed from this video is that the game itself looks a whole lot better from the previous gameplay videos we've seen. This is probably due to the fact that the title's developers have only recently revealed the little fact of Logan's Shadow being made to take full advantage of the PSP's processor - all 333 MHz of it. We also get to sneak a peek at the Havok physics, with the enemies' models falling in unscripted positions as Gabe put their lights out. Even more awesome. Check out the video at the embed below, you won't be disappointed. Enjoy! |

Over at the PlayStation blogs, Chris Reese, technical director of SCEA Bend Studio, announced that Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow is using all of the 333 MHz power of the PSP processor. Picking up from Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, Logan's Shadow is also about visuals, says Reese, and so they pushed further with detail, producing effects such as realistic water rendering in gameplay. Additionally, they've introduced Havok physics and more interactivity with elements in-game, while giving allowance to faster artificial intelligence (AI) response time. Logan's Shadow is being touted by the developers as a step up from Dark Mirror, and the expanded processing limit has allowed them to meet that claim with tangible evidence. "I can't wait until you see for yourself the difference that 333MHz makes when you get your hands on Logan's Shadow this fall," blogged Chris Reese, and we couldn't have said it better ourselves. More on Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow as they drop in. A well-deserved shout out goes to themm for the big tip. We owe 'ya one! |
