e[mulator]Some of you homebrew emulator followers have been wondering whatever happened to homebrew developer E and his emulator aptly named e[mulator] for PSP. Well, about two weeks ago, we featured the fix 2 for e[mulator] v0.81. Now, the good developer unleashed fix 3, and he shows no sign of stopping to perfect this emulator.

If you have forgotten all about this one, well allow us to refresh your memories. [e]mulator is a multi console emulator that supports E's own WonderSwan emulator (eSwan) and PC Engine emulator (HuE) plus Famicom and Gameboy emulators for the PSP.

Amidst all the fixes, the app is still not without any flaws. E considers them issues as a homebrew developer's work hazards, so he tirelessly corrects them. Now, he has taken care of the problems that has bogged the earlier versions. If there are still problems with this one, just make sure to let us and E know, through your comments.

 » PC-Engine CD-ROM ?

I was having problems getting the images/game to play correctly. Also after I had loaded it quite a few times, it just stopped letting me play. It would load up the game (DraculaX) then after first main cinema, when it was trying to load it would lock up.

I will download shortly and test it out and get back to you guys.

Not sure if E actually reads this (or can read this) but just in case, Hue's emulation since 0.64 has been really weird, i get alot of graphics glitches and freezes in certain games with any version later than 0.64, including all the releases of e[mulator]. 0.64 is still the best PCE emu on the psp hands down though. On the other side of the coin, the WSC emulation is fantastic and i've really been enjoying judgement silversword. Thanks for the hard work!

 » Bonk

Why is Bonk's Adventure so hard to emulate? Only my PC can handle the job. E, if you can rock this game out on the PSP, that would be awsome! I applaud you for working on not just one emu, but over 4, all in ONE PACKAGE!! Keep it up!

 » PC-Engine CD Update

First a bit about DraculaXX, Rondo of Blood(chi no rondo)

While Super Castlevania IV for the SNES brought the series to the new generation of 16-bit gaming, it seemed to lack some of the strides that previous games had taken. Where were the multiple characters, alternate routes, and different endings? Dracula X, released only in Japan for the PC Engine Super CD-ROM (known as the Turbografx-16/Turbo Duo in America), is widely regarded as the Holy Grail among Castlevania games, due to not only its aesthetic qualities, but also its sheer size.

In the year 1788, Dracula has once again been resurrected by some crazy cultists. He seeks revenge on Richter Belmont, heir of the family that so often sends him to the great beyond, by capturing his girlfriend Annet and goading him into a rescue attempt. Not one to stand by and let his woman down, Richter sets off to meet his destiny.

One of the biggest advantage of the CD-ROM format is the huge amount of available space, and it shows in the visuals. Dracula X looks absolutely incredible - the anime-inspired look is quite a bit more colorful than the dark, more gothic-themed Castlevania IV, and blows away the muddy look of the forgettable SNES semi-sequel. Not only are the backgrounds incredibly detailed, but the characters and enemies look gorgeous as well.

The format also leads to several anime cutscenes, as well as CD Audio music. For the first time, the Castlevania series was able to get high quality redbook audio. While several old themes make an appearance, there's an abundance of memorable new tunes, including Richter's Theme (used in the opening and first level).

While it's tempting to hold Dracula X in such high regards simply for the high levels reached in its graphics and music, that's not the real reason the game is so incredible. Dracula X is, quite simply, huge. There are only seven levels that need to be traversed in order to win, but there are five secret levels that must be found through a bit of ingenuity. Most of the secrets aren't horribly difficult to find, but it's unlikely you'll see all there is to see in a single playthrough. Many levels have alternate pathways within themselves. If that weren't enough, there are four captured hostages that, when found, will lead to the best ending.

The levels themselves are very interesting as well, taking you through one of the old towns from Castlevania 2 (except on fire), making your way through the old Castlevania entrance hall (except you're being chased by a gigantic bull demon), river rafting down a mountain, and dodging spikes and other traps in the dungeon - there's a lot to see and do here.

And in one of the most surprising momements of the series, one of the kidnapped actually joins you. Little Maria Renard, with blond hair and pink dress, armed with a variety of adorable animal helpers, will join Richter in the battle against Dracula. While the juxtaposition between the game's horror themes and the overwhelming cuteness is a bit odd at first, soon it will seem common place to take down a horde of zombies with an adorable 12-year old girl

I'd venture to say Maria is one of the best things about the game - although she can't take as many hits as Richter, her double jump makes her a lot more flexible. And her attack, where she throws doves at a short range that return like boomerangs, is actually much easier to wield than Richter's whip. I'd say that, in some ways, she almost makes the game too easy - Dracula is an absolute piece of cake when playing as Maria. But she's only there to play as if you want to - if you prefer the challenge, you can switch back to Richter at any Game Over screen.

If there's any area of the game that can be improved, it's the controls. Many of the amenities introduced in Super Castlevania 4 are gone - no multi-directional whipping, minimal controls in mid-jump, no whip flinging. Richter has a backflip that can be executed on by tapping the jump button twice, which is very useful for some of the more irritating enemies. However, a new feature ca

However, a new feature called the "Item Crash" is introduced, where you'll take your special weapon and do a major attack that eats up a lot of hearts. Also of annoyance is the fact that invulnerability time - that is, the flicker after getting hit where you can't be damaged - has been greatly shortened, meaning you'll tend to lose life very quickly if you're not careful. Thankfully, the game isn't too difficult, at least compared to the NES entries.

While I personally prefer the later generation Castlevania titles - that is, the ones like Symphony of the Night and Harmony of Dissonance, that are more RPG in nature - Dracula X is quite simply the best old-school Castlevania game there is. Even if you're a Castlevania pro and you manage to blast through the game in your first shot, there's a lot of other bits to see, do and experience.

Unfortunately, due to marketplace conditions (and the fact that the game is in such high demand), Dracula X often goes for very high prices - often $100+. And Konami, somewhere along the line, decided to crack down on distribution of the ISO image. Thankfully, the game is fully playable on the Magic Engine emulator, so you don't need to shell out the money for a PC Engine if you want to play. Hopefully Dracula X will be the next to be considered for the Chronicles line.

Onto my tests....

Still cannot advance past the title screen/menu in DracX. Once I enter my name and try to Start Game, it freezes up. I actually got it to work on old version of emulator, upto 3rd lvl or so. I tried using save states to help, but now I cannot locate them on my stick...and do not know if they are causing these problems.

I hope work continues on this project, as this emulator emulated the music perfectly! No other PC-Engine CD emulator for the PSP currently can boast that.

 » DRACULA X - PC-ENGINE CD!!!

[E], this is a personal request.

My birthday is in 3 days (16th) and I am much to old to be celebrating it... Please release fix 4, and work on this game for me please. To have this game emulated perfectly, especially on PSP would totally rock my world! I can watch the opening in Stereo Sound, and first cenema, but then it locks up!

Anyways keep up the good work, noone continues their work for as long as you have on this project, and IMHO I don't think you've gotten the respect you deserve. Thank you for all the hardwork.

 » PCE Dracula X

Yamabigdog, you have good tastes. I also want to be able to run this game on the PSP, and Ys Book I and II.

So far, the emulator that best runs PCE roms and cd's is YAME038e for the PC. Dracula X runs perfectly on it. Maybe this homebrew developer could find some open source of such emulator and apply it?

 » compatibility

Has ROM compatibility improved with the PC Engine emulator? It seems it was at it's peak with Hue v.62 and seems unchanged (or even worse) now. I'd rather have that than tacked on NES and Gameboy emulators that have already been perfected by others. I really haven't been able to tell any difference between the last 4 releases. Also, why does only one flipper work in Devil's Crush (TB-16?)

» THere is way to play DracX on PSP

# 11

There is an emulator that runs it, PCEP 0.7 and I think most of Hue's work as well. Plays it beginning to end with autosaves working, and savestates sorta working. Also runs Y's Book I & II a bit better on sound, but not as demanding as Drac-X prob why. Only downfall is that it emulates the sound very scratchy. [E]'s emu did it perfect sound, just the tracks were out of order, and the load problems. Anyways the emulator is PCEP v0.7 and findable on this website here

http://pspupdates.qj.net/PCEP-for-PSP-v0-7/pg/49/aid/6227

Or find it under Turbo Grafx 16 & PC-Engine, last file on their archive =-). It is the only functional PC-Engine Super CD-Rom system on PSP, I've played thru Drac X on it, I think I got savefile still. If you need help just post again here, as I'm keeping my eye on this emulator by [E].

Super CD Rom2 System V3.00.pce
The Super Cdrom v.3.00 bios is the start up of the cdrom, so you need this to run cd rom games. Google it.

Re-name your mp3's like this..

01.mp3
02.iso
03.mp3
So on.. I think only 2 .iso files.

Anyways GL, hope you get it running.
