iRShell with Vista Clarity skin

All of us mourned the news about Ahman stopping development of iRShell. But then, just a little less than a month ago, we discovered that Ahman was still at work improving iRShell to make it even better than it was currently. And personally, I expected nothing less than a knocks-your-socks-off release. The day has come when we can finally lay our hands on the best PSP shell ever released.

And are we impressed? Well, that would be a huge understatement to say the least! Ahman has made the best PSP shell even better, in the only way he can - dumping a truckload of features, and making all of them work great in tandem. Obviously, I haven't had a chance to check out all of the features in there, but just for convenience sake, I'll list them from his documentation:

New Features:
  • Added "Mute Game Audio" funtion via R-Trigger+Circle or last menu item. This will bring up an Audio Channel Menu which allows you to mute each individual channel. Example, you can mute the in-game music and leave the sound effect. Pls also note the iR Shell MP3 Player is indicated as "MP3 Player" in the menu and can't be muted.
  • Modify the change CPU settings, so that it won't cause system hangup even if a game is running in the background. When you change the CPU speed and a game is in the background, you will see the screen flashes which is normally. Pls also note that the change of CPU speed under devhook environment has been removed, which means you can't change CPU speed within iR Shell when running devhook.
  • Allow redirection of PSP keypad to PC Keyboard or PC Joystick via USB or WiFi (usbhostfs or nethostfs). You can, for example, use a Xbox/Xbox360 gamepad with 2 analog sticks to control movement and aim in a FPS, like Syphon Filter. You can choose "Redirect Keypad to Host" via usbhost0, nethost0, both, or No Redirection under iR Configurator.
  • Allow pmf movie as splash screen. Use iR Configurator to choose startup splash type, including bitmap file, pmf movie or no splash.  The included skins do not include any pmf movies, you'll have to download them separately. The PMF player has been enhanced to support movie clips with resolution lower than 480x272.
  • You can now launch 2.71 XMB from iR Shell under firmware 2.71 (Real 2.71, devhook 2.71 or 2.71 mode of SEB"). With host redirection, you can view host video using 2.71 XMB video player, mp4 & avc are all supported. Photo & music redirection won't work. You can also use the built-in iR Shell MP3 player after launching XMB.
  • Updated the launch XMB function, so you can leave the game disc in the UMD drive when launching XMB. It will now detect your disc type. If you've a UMD Video disc, it will launch the movie automatically. If it's a UMD Game disc, it will skip the auto-launch and just goes to XMB.
  • Allow the use of the 4th brightness setting (maximum) on the LCD. Normally, you can only set the 4th brightness when connected to a power adapter. This version allows you to activate the 4th brightness anytime by pressing "Left Trigger + Brightness". The setting will also carry over to Devhook firmware emulation when iR Shell is active. To return to normal brightness, press "Brightness" button.
  • When installing skins, iR Shell will also install "splash.pmf", "logo.bmp" & HELP image files from the skin directory. A default set from /IRSHELL/SYSTEM will be used if any of these are missing in the skin. The logo.bmp is now unprotected, so you can use any 480x272 bitmap file as splash screen.  You can skip Help file installation via iR Configurator option "Skip Help Files Installation", this may be useful if you've customised language specific Help files and don't want to be overwritten.
  • Changed the maximum number of plugins from 10 to 20.
  • Changed the maximum mp3 playlist size from 10 to 30.
  • Changed the maximum highlighted files from 10 to 30 for File Manipulation
  • Added firmware version indicator icons provided by StoneCut.
    • 1.5 - Running under firmware 1.5 (both virgin 1.5 or 1.5 mode of SEB)
    • 2.71 - Running under firmware 2.71 (both virgin 2.71 or 2.71 mode of SEB)
    • MS - Devhook emulation using Memory stick firmware
    • NAND - Devhook emulation using NAND firmware
This version includes the following plugins for 2.71 iR Shell which means you can open those file types under firmware 2.71:
  • Pmf Player (PMF)
  • Bookr 0.71  (TXT & PDF)
  • PMPMOD AVC 1.02  (AVC)
  • Atrac3 Player  (AT3)
  • ZIP & RAR Unarchiver (ZIP & RAR)
Bug Fixes:
  • Fix the bug in unable to press Triangle under APP view if "Hide RDF Sub-directory" is on.
  • Fix the bug in unable to goto RDF View from icon menu if "Hide RDF View" is on.
  • Fix a serious bug which will crash your PSP if initial view is set to APP View.
You can associate an icon image to each sub-folder under APP view. Name your icon image as "icon.png" and place it inside your sub-folder. Example, /PSP/GAME/$Emulators$/icon.png

For the full changelog and instructions, please make sure to check out his guides in the zip file. The guide, by the way, is nothing less than a multi-page PDF file detailing each and every feature or iRShell v3.

I never heard about this app before. Messed around with the screen capture, browsed through a few of my UMDs' videos, and taken about 60 captures so far, mostly from Ridge Racer. Have yet to try what else is in here.

Thanks Ahman. You just saved me from upgrading to 2.80.

that's all well and good, but until he get's over himself and gives people the one feature they want, iso's over wifi, it's all just a ton features most of us will never use or care to use

You have not really tried this version have you???

   Re: DCJoeDog - 2006-12-01
 » nope

no, I haven't tried it yet, I have the 2.71se-B'' rebuild tho, and like I said, it has lots of nice features but until the, in my book, ultimate requested feature is brought, it's just a cool thing to play with

let me ask you this, does it have iso's over wifi?

   Re: StoneCut (Unregistered) - 2006-12-01
 » ISO via WiFi

ISO via WiFi and USBhostFS is available via a plugin which comes bundled with iR Shell ...

   Re: MemStick (Unregistered) - 2006-12-01
 » mmm

why iso over wifi? spend the $70 and get a 4gb stick and be done with it?

   Re: DCJoeDog - 2006-12-01
 » I take it back

I humbly will now stick my foot in my mouth, since there was NO mention of this feature in the feature list on any site I figured it wasn't there. So I took people's advice and just installed it, setup my wifi setting and then press "X" on a iso/cso image, and what do you know, the damned thing loaded up over wifi

NOW, I will use this as my default shell, thanks AhMan

   Re: DCJoeDog - 2006-12-01
 » not perfect but...

ok, I have messed with it for a bit and this is my findings. I can load iso's and cso's with this plugin in 3.0 under 2.71, but there so somethings you all should know. 1. it is very sloooowww, but that was expected, 2. you can NOT use saves at all, 3. it is VERY buggy, and most times you will NOT load the game on the first try(works better with older/smaller iso's)

there you go, that is my little review of this one feature

I'm using 1.5 PSP and the nethost i downloaded via link above
SETTINGS:
(btw:router-ip 192.168.2.1)
1.) i startet with this command:
nethostfs -p 7513 -l mypass -r /cygdrive
2.) irshell settings are
NetHost IP/Name (AP): 192.168.2.32
NetHost IP (Adhoc): 192.168.2.32
NetHost Port: 7513
NetHost Password: mypass.

3.) created a connection called "Adhoc irshell" with a static IP and the correct wlan settings of course.

When i click on the nethost icon(s) i get an "connection error" then the app freezes and my psp resets after few seconds.

maybe i did a noobish wrong setting or sth :-P i dunno

 » iR Shell 3.0

Just when you thought homebrew couldn't get any better we have the mighty AhMan prove us wrong: iR Shell is back and it's back with a vengeance !

Coming back from his retirement only to give iR Shell the final fixup it so desperately needed in the dawning of the FW2.71(SE) era, we see AhMan not only add full support for FW2.71 with HenD but also full support for FW2.71SE-C by Dark_AleX additionally to the already "proven stable" platform FW1.5.

But iR Shell 3.0 not only adds a new dimension for those PSP gamers who are stuck with the dreaded TA82 motherboard, it comes with many new functions for everybody with a homebrew-capable PSP to explore. You can now mute selected parts of the game audio, like the music for example, and enjoy your own mp3 soundtracks mixed with the game sound fx even if the game's options don't offer such a choice. You can now use the 4th screen brightness setting at all times, even when your PSP is not connected to the ac adapter. You can now enjoy your own custom PMF movie or BMP image splash screens. You can redirect game controls to a PC or XBOX controller via USBhostFS or USBhostFS and much more. There are plenty new skins to enjoy and there are many bugfixes and general improvements that happened "under the hood", too, of course.

While AhMan already considered iR Shell 2.2 to be completed and had gone into retirement from development, we can only take iR Shell 3.0 as a final gift to all the PSP fans everywhere in the world. Download it, install it and if you like it then enjoy it in it's final release.

iR Shell development has now been stopped again and AhMan shall go back into his retirement. We should all be grateful and enjoy what we have. Respect that decision and don't request any new features. If you want to give back then create a new skin or code a plugin for it and share it with us. This community will stay here and you are invited to come in if you feel like it or need help with anything.

Thank you AhMan for this final release for us all ! It was fun testing all the crazy new stuff you come up with that I never thought would be possible. iR Shell 3.0 sure is a masterpiece and you deserve a long, long holiday from PSP development. Enjoy whatever you want to do now and drop into the forum every now and then for some PSP gossip :p

» I dont see the point of IRshell

What is the point of it exactly? Most of its functions can be done in the main XMB anyways, and you have to go into your game folder to open it. Can someone explain to me the point?

   Re: eminentjonfrost (Unregistered) - 2006-12-01
 » reply

XMB cannot multitask for one...

   Re: jrfhoutx - 2006-12-01
 » It's a shell dummy

The point is it replaces the XMB and adds greater functionality, like multitasking, mp3s in your games, 4th brightness, the list goes on . Try auto-booting it, that way you don't have to go into the game folder, and it comes up right away and you never have to see the XMB. I'm not going to rewrite the readme.txt, and if YOU wanna know what it can do YOU should try either reading the readme or going to www.irshell.com and investigating it for YOURSELF... Lazy f**king b@st@rd...
