id Software, Fountainhead open mobile division for DS, PSP, cell phones - Image 1Renowned video game development studio id Software Fountainhead Entertainment announced today a new partnership that will bring about the new division id Mobile. This new department is tasked to come up with games for mobile phones, Nintendo DS, and the Sony PlayStation Portable.

"Worldwide, mobile gaming has the potential to eclipse conventional gaming platforms. The resource constraints of mobile platforms reward technical and design virtuosity, making it a place where we can leverage the historic strengths of our company," commented id Software technical director and co-founder John Carmack.

Prior to this official team up, the two companies have already collaborated in coming up with games like Orcs & Elves for DS as well as Orcs & Elves II and Doom RPG for mobile phones. id Mobile will be headed by Fountainhead Entertainment Founder and former id Software Director of Business Development at id Software Katherine Anna Kang.

"id Software is known for doing things that don't conform to the status-quo and as a result, they've led the gaming industry forward through their original ideas, technical prowess, and the uncanny ability to see into the future; with id Mobile, that tradition continues," added Kang.

id Mobile has yet to name its first official project but we wouldn't be surprised to see announcements of a new portable Doom game soon.

I don't know whether to be happy that we're getting something for PSP, or sad that ID would stoop to putting out cell phones games.
