PSP

Harleyg from our forums has released another custom firmware mod for all you firmware flashers out there! Harleyg's custom firmware mod adds a menu and submenus inside recovery mode, so you can replace vshmain.prx, index.dat and recovery.elf via recovery mode with all safety checks, etc. Not satisfied with that, Harleyg has also added the option to change the CPU clock speed, USB mode, and remove custom firmware patch.

Harleyg has also modded another custom firmware so you can now "dual boot" into 2.71 firmware by auto-loading DevHook at startup by holding the left trigger while booting, otherwise you go into 1.50! This ingenious idea should make it much easier to launch higher firmwares or keep in 1.5 with minimal hassle! Although this custom firmware mod has been tested by Harleyg many times, bricking your PSP is always a possibility when writing to the flash memory - please be careful!

Update #1: We have also received word of another Custom Firmware module, this time released by Zettablade from our forums. Here's the details:

Zettablades' Custom firmware mod adds the ability to take screenshots using the note key, an automatic USB function (just plug the USB cable in and it works), and overclocks your PSP's CPU to 333Mhz. There is currently only one bug : If you go into the USB menu under system, the auto usb will stop working until you do a full restart; so don't use it! Remember: When using Zettablades' custom firmware mod there is no need to use the USB connection menu because it has auto-USB connect.

Update #2: Zettablades has released v0.01a, details available in the forum link below.

Admin Note: Phew! If nothing else, the PSP scene can't ever be accused of not being dramatic - some of you guys need to lay off the pixie sticks! Many of the reports of these mods bricking PSP's were falsified - dupe posts made by a few people. It should be noted that these mods are as safe as Dark_Alex's original Custom Firmware application, they are just mods. If directions are properly followed, there should not be an issue - especially since there is a recovery option.

 » wtf

Whoever posts these articles don't know jack ***** about the PSP. That update they just posted isn't a *****ing firmware mod. It's a *****ing prx that the custom firmware loads. Why does QJ hire idiots?

i wouldn't trust harleyg, wasn't he that dude who posted a bricker on psp-hacks forums?

 » hm

The point isn't that it bricks, which apparently it looks like some people bricked, but that the features it offers are not NEARLY worth even the risk of it.

It's Dark Alex's firmware + holding L to boot devhook and 2.71. Not nearly worth it. Wait until something interesting happens, where a developer makes that can do something you can't already.

Booting up devhook and then loading up 2.71 is entirely possible in STANDARD 1.50, so there is no real point in doing it automatically, except to save 8 seconds or so. But things like recovery mode ARE in fact good features that ARE worth it.

 » False Reports of Bricking

I have removed all multiple fake reports of bricking that were originating from the same IP. There were 2 or 3 culprits. Any other reports of bricking in these comments did not appear to be falsified and should be taken into consideration.

u guys who brinkd ur psps.... i feel bad for all of ya but even still... yall suk... it is ur fault. ILl NEVA TRY CUSTOM FIRMWARE until they have these features:

more common video playbacks( like avi and such)

a littl unbricker app that loads everytime just in case ur psp is bricked (tht way i can dl any firmware update and run it via usb to psp to flash da files back to ma psp= umbricked!!!... n yes i do kno bout the one in dark_alex's POC firmware... but i dun think its gud enuf but who am i to sat nething=P)

direct psp to pc streamin and sharing ( like wut irshell does)

a potential choice of firmware loads (like the 1 that this mod has... tht wud b cool)

choice of design for ur psp( ie how it looks when starting frm a fresh restart, booting up games, changing icons ect.)

these r just a few of my ideas and i would love to c them in a custom firmware... just say its my version of a "perfect firmware" lol

bah, false people, its only 1 fricken step to flash, how would idiots brick there PSP in a quick step?

honestly... ^_^

it's pretty nifty, 1 quick step, a tiny step, though i tried both PRXs, none of them are brickers (pats PSP).

 » instead of doing this

instead of doing this y don't they figure out how to just take the kool features from 2.71 without the security and bam u have a 2.71 firmware that can run homebrew

   by Fallen_Angel - 2006-07-16
 » Not a bricker.

Tested it. Works. Steps:

1. Uninstall old FW mod with Slasher's program (if any)
2. Extract ZIP contents to memory stick.
3. Run custom installer.
4. Open config.txt file and choose your options.

For those people who say they bricked their PSP... Please stop lying. Unless you didn't have the AC Adapter plugged in and the battery ran out, or the battery dropped out, it's virtually impossible to screw this up.

   by Fallen_Angel - 2006-07-16
 » By the way, @74

It comes in steps. Like the downdater. Could we have had it if we didn't have the kernal exploit? And also, you can't just combine the PRX files from different FW, and *poof* it works. If it was that easy, it would have been released already by the many devs who are working on it.

to number 74, if it was that esay it would've been done lol

I'm happy now with 1.5. If there is more stuff added I provably shall try.

Pacience I say... look at the downgraders for example :)

whats the difference between custom firmwares and the epsilon bios, so far, the epsilon bios looks better than these custom jobs... for now.

 » problem

I'm having a problem, I installed the devhook autoloader, but instead of having to hold L to load devhook, it just loads automatically!
I was stuck on 2.7 for a while, I had to open the config.txt and delete the autoboot line of code to get back to 1.50!

thanks, holding TRIANGLE gets me back to 1.50

 » hanh!!

wtf, who cares bout firmware mods now, theres still helpless pple with 2.7x and we can do anything but crappy flash player thats sometimes no audio,at least a downgrader for 2.7 then mods, u know ;)

   by Kiatsu (Unregistered) - 2006-07-16
 » meh.

well sorry to sound insensitive but most people don't care about 2.7 right now
The majority of people are/were on 2.6 or lower, and every can downgrade now, and emulate 2.71 using devhook!
If you bought a new psp with 2.71 installed then I'm sorry, but if you actually upgraded your firmware then you're an idiot.
