PrometeusPro interface - Image 1

First, the good news. Dago^WATT has just released the demo version of PrometeusPro 0.10.1, his latest installment for the PrometeusPro series of homebrew apps for the Mac. For first-time visitors asking what it does, the Prometeus app allows Mac owners the capability to play PSOne games on their PSP, as well as Compress ISOs.

As for the bad news: Dago^WATT has also has announced that he will be cancelling the development of Prometeus, as the homebrew had no CD-rip function. If anything, version 0.10.1 now has CDDA support, which should alleviate the former's absence. See the changelog:
  • CDDA support (0.10.1)
  • .PBP can be opened from Finder (0.10.0)
  • .PMF and .AT3 support (PSX ->PSP / PBP 0.10.0)
As always, we advise the guys to view the bundle's README, and make sure to donate 1 Euro/USD if you want to get the full version of this app. Given what this has done for the Mac users among us, we figured that's a small price to pay for its features. Enjoy the demo, and make sure to check out some of the video-related brews that are making their way to Mac users.

MacX_romcnv - Image 1Reading some comments about our report on Dago^WATT's Prometeus application for Mac users, we feel the clamor for more Mac-friendly PSP applications. Now, it seems that we aren't the only ones feeling that, because apparently, some developers are also trying their best to dish out Mac-friendly PSP applications. One of those devs is b8a.

The homebrew applications developer has recently released MacX_romcnv. From the name alone, you may already know that this is another Mac application for the PSP. But just to make everything crystal clear, this is an application for Mac OS X that allows you to convert MAME compatible NEOGEO and CPS2 ROMs for use with NJ's MVSPSP and CPS2PSP arcade emulators for the PSP. Cool, right?

Basically, it is a port of fellow homebrew dev NJ's original converters, which is made to run for Windows. b8a adds that "this application is only for use with ROM images for games that you legally and legitimately own." He also adds that he thoroughly tested it on a PowerPC 10.3.9 and he had also tested it with a few games, so your feedback would be very much appreciated.

Being the thorough developer that he is, the readme file that comes with the download holds all the instructions on how to use it. So you better read up, ok?

Prom Pro

Okay, since you guys are all agog for Prometeus, we're not gonna make you wait much longer. We already have here for you the newest version of this multi-faceted application. So, we won't be keeping you much longer.

Basically, what this version has is that it's got the GetISO function updated. Also, you can now decompress ISOs from PBP. An additional function would be the ability to cut Zeros from end of image file (0.9.8). As for the rest of the new PBP features:
  • Patch IDs: Name and Game ID number patch without extract EBOOT.PBP.
  • GetISO: You can save ISO from EBOOT.PBP
  • Delete Files: App delete all Unpacked files from the folder
And some other new stuff:
  • Built in CDripper (0.9.5)
  • Create folder with Game Name, automatically copy there KEYS.BIN and EBOOT.PBP.
  • Allow different PNG sizes (but not allow bigger than max size) except BACKGROUND.PNG (it has fix size).
  • When you change Game ID Number or Game Name you don't have got to press Enter. (Just Press Start button)
  • Live preview,
  • Unpack / pack PBP files.
Don't forget the ReadMe files, ayt?

Prometeus Pro

You Mac OS X aficionados really like Prometeus, didn't you? You guys were raving about it when we last brought it up. Well, there's a new version out that should be of interest to you guys.

Prometeus v0.9.7B2 is a demo version of the app that combines the PSOne game-playing capability and ISO compression function of the previous version with the ability to save ISO directly from EBOOT.PBP files. For the most part, we've placed the recent changes and features of the app below.

One thing you might like to know is that Dago^WATT and Prometeus are asking for donations from interested users. If you've noticed, we mentioned that Prometeus v0.9.7B2 is a demo. Their download page states that the Pro functions in this demo are only usable thrice, and you have to restart the app if you want to use it again. Giving them a modest donation, however, alleviates the problem.

Interested users of the app can opt to donate one dollar to them and they'll send you v0.9.8, which they call PrometeusPro. The update updates certain functions. As they mention on their blog, "GetISO function updated. You can decompress ISOs from PBP. Additional function: You can cut zeros from end of image file (0.9.8)." It's not exactly a very big revision, but it does help them in the long run. For now, we'll let you guys visit their site to try out the demo, and if you're liking the download, you can order it directly from them. Enjoy!

  • New PBP features:
    • Patch IDs: Name and Game ID number patch without extract EBOOT.PBP.
    • GetISO: You can save ISO from EBOOT.PBP
    • Delete Files: App delete all Unpacked files from the folder
  • Built in CDripper (from 0.9.5)
  • Create folder with Game Name, automatically copy there KEYS.BIN and EBOOT.PBP.
  • Allow different PNG sizes (but not allow bigger than max size) except BACKGROUND.PNG (it has fix size).
  • When you change Game ID Number or Game Name you don't have got to press Enter. (Just Press Start button)
  • Live preview
  • Unpack / pack PBP files.

Yes, I Can't Believe This Isn't Windows Either!

Mac OS X users need not fret about missing all the syrupy PSP homebrew goodness (not to mention Popstation) with Dago^WATT and Prometeus on the case. The previous two versions we've featured here opened Mac users to a whole world of classic PSOne games - their classic PSOne games - on their PSPs, so here comes v0.9.6B to brighten up that world even more, as the homebrew program now features ISO compression!

Which brings us to the next question: does this mean that the files generated are meant for use with 3.03 OE-A (which supports file compression)? Dago^WATT didn't mention anything in his website whether this means that his users may now have to upgrade to the latest in custom firmware, or if the generated files could still be used in 3.02 OE-B (which doesn't support compressed ISOs). Nothing is mentioned in the Readme either. Uh-oh... we hope the guy releases a clarificatory statement later on.

In any case, here's the file for you to play around with, and if you happen to understand Hungarian, then feel free to swing by Dago^WATT's page for more information.

Thanks for the tip, Kichigai Mentat!

Prometeus - Image 1 Prometeus - Image 2

Operating systems Mac and Windows are like apples and oranges (Pun intended? Probably). So when it comes to using them with our dear PSP handhelds, we've got to have different homebrew applications. Take for example PSX2PSP from developer KingSquitter. It's for Windows, yes, but it also has its Mac counterpart as well.

We've actually reported on Prometeus before. Created by Dago^WATT, the application allows for manipulating PSX games and making them compatible with 3.02 OE. Accordingly, there was a rather nasty problem in the previous release, which would sometimes generate a defunct EBOOT when performing the conversion.

The bug is now, of course, fixed not to mention that the conversion and the games themselves run faster. In case you guys are interested, there is actually a somewhat Pro version of the application that can be obtained by donating one dollar to Dago^WATT. The Read link below will take you to the developer's personal page. The Pro version, lastly, has these following features:
  • Create folder with Game Name, automatically copy there KEYS.BIN and EBOOT.PBP.
  • Allow different PNG sizes (but not allow bigger than max size) except BACKGROUND.PNG (it has fix size).
  • When you change Game ID Number or Game Name you don't have got to press Enter. (Just Press Start button).
  • Live preview.
  • Unpack / pack PBP files.
  • Supports direct CD-ripping.
