PSP Slim disassembly pics - Image 1The folks over at TGBUS.com have gotten their hands on a PSP Slim, and they've taken the time to take it apart and give the PSP community a look at the innards of Sony's new PlayStation Portable.

There's a whole lot of pictures showing everything from the screen to the motherboard, even the UMD mechanism. You can also see the TA-085 marking clearly on the new PSP's board. You can check out all the images by clicking on the Read link below.

There are no pictures of a box, though, so we don't know if this is one of the new production models or an older prototype model. The new PSPs are reportedly already available at SonyStyle's Hong Kong store, however, so odds are it's new. 0okm has also gotten his hands on a brand new PSP-2006PB with the intention of disassembling it. Keep an eye on this blog for further updates.

One of the well-known homebrew developers, 0okm, has just bought his own PSP-2006PB or what is otherwise known as PlayStation Portable Slim/Lite. We are not certain where exactly the item was purchased but it seems that the new SKU has finally arrived in Hong Kong earlier today.

Also, we checked around the Internet and learned that the official SonyStyle store for HK has already started selling the new PSP units for HK$ 1,280 or roughly around US$ 164.15. The colors available for purchase include Silver, White, and Piano Black (similar to 0okm's).

Consistent with earlier reports, PSP Slim is indeed running on official firmware 3.60. Some of the other features implemented by Sony on this new system include RAM increase, improved battery life, and TV output among others. 0okm has promised to disassemble the PSP Slim in the coming days and to report on whatever new things he finds out.

Other markets should have their retail supplies of PSP Slim and Lite by September 20.

PSP LCD Remote with FM radio - Image 1You all know what to expect with these accessories for your PlayStation Portable (PSP). Sometimes they are really something and useful, other times they are just completely unnecessary. We found one today over at online site Brando.com and we'll leave it up to you to decide if you want to get one or not.

The product itself doesn't have a proper name but it is actually an LCD Remote for your handheld. We believe the selling point of this product is its built-in FM stereo radio. Not to be cynical but the said site actually misspelled the word "radio" and
again, it's your call if you'll be turned off by that or not.

Anyway, it was mentioned that the product offers complete remote functionality with your PSP not to mention its easy-to-switch function between radio and PSP mode. Take note though that the LCD Remote doesn't come with its own battery so its power source is coming directly from the console.

The Read link below should take you to the product page and kindly tell us what you think about the product. On a last note, be informed that LCD Remote is not an official Sony product. The online site originates from Hong Kong.

The package containing the Hong Kong memory card - Image 1Everybody loves a good bargain, but sometimes, cheaper may not actually be better. To test this theory, the owner of the Japanese blog PSP Gadgetz decided to use a cheap 4GB memory stick as his guinea pig, and the results are pretty comprehensive. To start the experiment, the 4GB memory stick was ordered from a Hong Kong retailer who sold it for ¥4000 (about US$ 35), postage included. After receiving the memory stick, it was then tested and was found to check out in the following areas:
  • the memory stick was formatted without problems
  • taking photos and movies with the USB camera
  • music playback
  • MPEG4 and AVC playback
  • M-JPEG playback
  • game archives
  • game demos
  • playback of video recordings
  • saving game data (using Monster Hunter Portable 2)
Despite these, however, the following issues were detected:
  • failure to save/play back contents from P-TV
  • failure to "transfer the tune" that is obtained via SonicStage
We are yet to try out the same type of memory stick that the PSP Gadgetz blogger used, but we're guessing that most of the cheaper varieties may actually be a good buy if you don't demand too much from your PSP. If you're the type to regularly use services like SonicStage and P-TV, though, it looks like it may be a good idea to just stick with official, licensed products.

In the meantime, a couple of videos were taken which shows the tests that the Hong Kong memory stick went through. Give it a look and see which type of memory stick is actually the one for you.

The other day, we were toying with the idea why manly men oughta own pink portables. We came up with several reasons and most of you probably found yourselves agreeing and laughing, if we may add. While we are still fascinated with the color pink, we'd like to move to the other side of the spectrum and share this with you.

Over at eBay, we found an item that is sure to pimp your PSP a few notch up and will probably earn you the moniker Gran' Mamah. It's actually a mercury golden faceplate cover for our PSP units. It says it's for UK but what the heck, that never stopped you from bidding before, eh? Starting bid is at US$ 1.92 and the last time we look, there aren't any bidders yet.

gold faceplate

The item originally comes from Hong Kong so shipping it here will cost you somewhere around US$ 15.50. The Read link below will take you directly to the item's page at eBay. Please take note that bidding will end 2 days and 4 hours from now. But then again, in case you don't make it or win the bid, we know that you could always come up with your own.

Sandisk 4gb with adaptorWe've got another cool deal for the SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo 4GB. Coming with an Adaptor, it may be yours for just US$ 123. For Hong Kong locals, that would be HK$ 953.25, while for the UK aficionados, that would be just under £ 65.

But price aside, just how much of a good deal is this, really? Well, if you'd actually consider the high speed data transfer you'll have, the high capacities of the card itself, along with the embedded MagicGate technology, which makes it safe for transfer of copyright protected content, then heck. This is one good deal. Of course, it also helps that it is compatible to all MS PRO devices with the use of the Adaptor (well what do you know..it is included in the bundle!).

So, if you're looking for that ideal solution for your PSP's needs, this one's already calling out to you. Just click on the Read link below to check out the site. By the way, it says there that shipment's usually made within 24 hours, so you shouldn't have to wait too long for that.

Ó

lik-sang logoLet this be a lesson for those who intend to import Sony handhelds and consoles into the UK or European Economic Area (EEA) without the express consent of Sony. Online Asian electronics distributor Lik-Sang was found to be in breach of intellectual property rights for offering Japanese PSPs to European consumers.

The justification of Lik-Sang was that its operation was well within the boundaries of law as the company is based in Hong Kong, and does not physically have a trading presence in the EEA or UK. However, presiding Judge Michael Fysh held for plaintiff Sony, finding that, " The acts of which the complainant is made have, in my view, been perpetrated not in Hong Kong but here in the EEA, and without Sony's consent."

While Sony kept mum about the case, a company spokesperson did tell G.I.biz that they will not hesitate to fully utilize the protection granted to them by law with regard to the issue of grey importing. More than just the sale of their consoles and handhelds, what they are ultimately protecting is the consumers. They don't want people to be getting hardware that did not pass the strict EU or UK consumer safety standards. And there are, in fact, a lot of factors to consider, such as the voltage supply differences, the backwards compatibility of the softwares, and the warranty coverage.

The warning comes particularly strong in light of the upcoming release of the PlayStation 3 in the U. S. and Japan. They anticipate that European consumers would want to grab a hold of the next-gen consoles as soon as possible, given that the PAL release has been delayed for another four months.

Says Sony's unnamed spokesperson, "The law is clear; grey importing PS2, PSP or PS3 into the EU, without the express permission of SCE is illegal. Therefore, we will utilize the full scope of the law to put a stop to any retailers who chose to do this."

That's tough.

Rengoku II

Hudson Soft and Konami better have added some redeeming factor to this followup to Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory, which didn't actually made a very good impression on a lot of PSP gamers. Hopefully this one will go a different route.

You still take on the character of A.D.A.M (Autonomous Dueling Armed Machine), which in the past a very destructive and efficient weapon of war. Because peace has once again been restored, A.D.A.M have been deemed obsolete and banished into the tower of Rengoku. Rengoku is a place where war is in an eternal loop. One android will strive to change his fate by battling their way through the tower laying waste to the Seven Deadly Sins.

Changes made to this game according to Konami are:

  • Customizable character with new upgrades
  • New level design adds new challenges with interactive environments
  • Updated battle system makes ratchets up the action-oriented gameplay
  • Game sharing allows up to 4 players to battle with one UMD wirelessly.
  • Grotesque character designs by the famous illustrator Jun Suemi
  • Impressive main theme music is created by Hong Kong based composer, Chan Kwong Wing
Everything deserves another chance. You can start giving this game another look by downloading its official trailer via the download link below.
