Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) crunched up some big numbers well over the one million unit barrier during the 2007 holiday season with the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3. CEO and President Jack Tretton is elated, and promises more momentum when the PSP gets God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. The PS3 is also calling in the cavalry in the form of Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and more. |

Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, recently related his confidence for Sony's future, saying that: "You’ll have to blame my math teachers in school if this doesn’t make
sense, but if we have 67% growth [for the PlayStation 3] over last year in our revenue,
and if 45% of all software sold is on our three platforms, I’ll take
that kind of disaster all year long." Read more about the interview in the full article, including how Sony plans to sell 33 million units of hardware by the end of their fiscal year. |

In a recent interview, Jack Tretton - CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America - talks about how the PlayStation Network is competing effectively against Xbox Live (in contrast to an earlier interview with Microsoft who said they "don't have competition"), how Home is like "nothing seen before" and perhaps a hint of a direct video and music download service in the future for the PSP. Leipzig Games Convention

Sony fans should be tuning into the Leipzig Games Convention as the electronics and gaming giant is planning to make the Leipzig event their main platform for making big announcements for the PlayStation 3 and PSP. One of the expected announcements is a TV tuner for the PS3 that will enable the console to record digital-quality TV. Sony is also expected to formally announce a video download service for the PSP (just in time, according to Jack Tretton). Other new features expected to be introduced to the public at Leipzig are the video chat and messaging systems for the PSP. Attempts to beef up Sony's PS3 and PSP are being made in an effort to draw both gaming and non-gaming crowds alike, and Leipzig is looking to be an important venue to make such announcements. Josef Rahmen, managing director of the Leipziger Messe, tells us why. "This year we are expecting over 9,000 trade visitors and some 2,800 journalists from over 35 countries," he said. Definitely some important numbers you want to impress, if you were a big electronics and gaming giant. |

For those waiting for the promised PSP Download Store, it looks like you'll have to wait a little bit longer. Sony officials were not able to specify a launch date when asked about the PSP's downloadable media service. The reason? Sony is still working on Digital Rights Management (DRM) to protect downloadable content from getting pirated, said John Koller, spokesman for the PlayStation Portable. According to some financial analysts like Forrester Research's James McQuivey, the delay is setting back the PSP from challenging the popularity of the iPod. "It could have been the first big mobile carrier of TV shows and movies," said McQuivey on the PSP's potential to become one of the best portable media devices should it have DRM. Even Jack Tretton, Sony Computer Entertainment America's (SCEA) president recognizes the importance of the downloadable service for the PSP. I think the advent of a long awaited and quite frankly long overdue ability to deliver a downloadable service for the PSP will help us out a great deal... Hopefully we'll have it out there by the fall. The Sony executives did give some information about the upcoming PSP downloadable store. Short form games will be available, and once music and movies are made available in the service, Koller promises that they will be of the same quality as the almost-flawless UMD media. |

On to fifth issue of QuickJump QuickPeek! Positive feedback has been strong and if there's one thing we love to do outside playing videogames, that's got to be making sure you guys are liking your stay here. So amidst the fanboyish shouts of "Avada Kevadra" and "Erecto Wand" (opps, wrong spell) from potter maniacs here at the office, we bring you the round-up of the things that shook the halls of the gaming industry this week.
PlayStation Portable Welcome to our fifth issue! For this run, we have more news that prove how strong the PSP homebrew scene is. For starters, we have Sony CEO Jack Tretton signifying support for PSP homebrew. For those who missed this report, try pulling those raised eyebrows a little lower first. OK, this "little" revelation was made on an IGN interview with Sony bigwigs Tretton, senior manager Patrick Seybold, and senior director Dave Karraker. When asked whether they have any plans of giving PSP homebrew some long-deserved love, here's what Mr. Tretton has to say: "We certainly see some of the stuff that has been done via homebrew, and it's incredibly creative. And I think we'd like to try and tap into that a little bit more". Now ain't that a stunner? Not really. Sony's a company that thrives on creativity, so it's highly likely that they still know how to appreciate creative strokes of genius when they see it. However certain boundaries are part of entrepreneurial realities, so it's only natural for them to be protective of their own product. We'll keep an eye on how this will develop. Meanwhile... The full issue awaits after the jump! |
