PSP homebrew developer Jamie Fuller just dropped by the QJ.Net Forums earlier to announce the release of his latest project, Mayhem in Monsterland. This homebrew game is a sidescrolling platformer that takes players through the world of Monsterland, clearing enemy monsters along the way. Depending on the stage's mood (happy or sad), players will have to collect enough bombs or stars to open up the exit so they can move on to the next stage.

That's the summary of the game mechanics - more details should be available in the accompanying file readme. On a more personal note, playing through the game got me remembering classic platformers like Mario and Sonic, although Mayhem in Monsterland definitely carries its own charm. PSP homebrew developer Jamie Fuller dropped by the QJ.Net Forums to release a new game for the community - PSP Boggle. As its name implies, this homebrew is a PSP adaptation of the highly popular Boggle word game. For the benefit of gamers unfamiliar with this classic game, here's an explanation (excerpt via wikipedia):

The play begins by randomizing a tray of sixteen cubical dice, normally by shaking. Each has a different letter printed on each of its sides. The dice settle into a four by four tray such that only the top letter of each cube is visible. After they have settled into the grid, a three-minute timer is started and all players simultaneously begin the main phase of play.


Players must then create words by lining up the adjacent letters in the 4 by 4 grid. The longer the words (and more letters used), the more points are built up. PSP Boggle currently has 90, 000 words in its dictionary.

Game controls, installation instructions, and additional info is accessible in the readme file- make sure to view that before trying the game out. PSP Stack  - Image 1 After a long absence from the QJ boards, homebrew developer Jamie Fuller (creator of SensitivePSP) is announcing a comeback via the release of PSP Stacks. This game is inspired by the Ambi-stax games for mobiles, and has the player inserting different-colored PSPs into the two stack seen on the screenshot.

If the player can get three PSPs of the same color together, the stack disintegrates, which in turn gives the player more time - we're imagining PSP-style Meteos. And as some of you guessed, the game ends when the stacks fill up. The game gets harder as the player progresses, so be sure to have your game groove going when you download.

As for the basic controls (Take note it's a rotated PSP):
  • Up/Down: Move player
  • 'X': Drop PSPs
  • Start: Pause game

Jamie Fuller from our forums, the same guy that has brought the homebrew scene great homebrew games like Planet Smash and SensitivePSP has today released a preview of his latest homebrew game to bring to the PSP, and it goes by the name of Downfall. If you ever remember playing this game as a kid (or as an adult!) you'll know that it is quite fun and pretty addictive.

The object of the game is to move one of the cogs around once per turn and then let the other person have a go, with the aim of the game being to get your counters to the bottom of the "board" before the second player does. But every time you move your cogs, they move on the other player's side too! You control the 'cogs' by moving the cursor over them with the analogue stick and pressing 'Cross' to turn anti-clockwise and pressing 'Circle' to turn clockwise.

Now this is just a preview, and that's simply because Jamie is unsure whether anybody is interested in the game. He started it when wanting to create a 2 player game with a chat client built in, and thought this would be ideal, but after completing the GFX to an excellent standard as you can see by the screenshots and the basic gameplay, Jamie is unsure whether to continue with this project. It includes a chat component and an MP3 player so you'll never get bored whilst waiting to play your opponent once it's finished, but the networking for two players has not been completed yet, so don't go grabbing your friends PSP to play just yet.

PEW PEW PEW!!!!


It's fun being a bad guy. Especially when your spaceship has the power to drag a planet around like the sad little ball of life that it is. If you've ever wanted to know h ow much fun it could be to wield that kind of power, then Planet Smash is the game for you.

Developed by Jamie Fuller, maker of SensitivePSP, the game feels like one part matching game and three parts 3D space shooter. To get to the shooter portion, you have to make the enemies want to come and get you. To do that, you have to destroy their homeworld by grabbing it with your spaceship, dragging it to the nearest matching planet, and forcing them to collide into each other.

Then the shooter begins. Every time you crash planets into one another, the last remnants of that civilization take their remaining spaceships to try and beat the stuffing out of you with laser fire. All you have to do is kill every last one of them to make the world a safer place (for just you) and advance to the next level, which has more enemies to shoot and planets to smash.

By the way, the game plays out like a 3D shooter because you can fly in any direction using the left and right arrow keys to rotate the ship's orientation and the up and down keys for forward and back. While your main goal is to use the radar to track a planet down and smash it into another one, you could always just  fly around in the vast emptiness of space, asking yourself why you're so cool.

Those who haven't checked out Jamie Fuller's SensitivePSP are probably dozing off when great homebrew games get announced in the QJ forums. Anyway, Jamie just announced an update for SensitivePSP and it's called SensitivePSP v1 fix. A couple of reported bugs and another one which he found got fixed. These are:
  • Crashing after dying lots
  • Diagonals causing corruptions
  • Blocks remaining display
Great job Jamie did on this one, as lots of players who have gotten themselves involved deeply in the higher levels of the game may find relief from not experiencing these bugs anymore. To install, unrar SensitivePSPV1.rar inside the zip. You will find 2 folders called sensepsp and sensepsp%. Drag and Drop these 2 folders to the GAME folder of your MS (normally ms0:PSPGAME).

SensitivePSP is the result of Jamie's first trials with the PSP. With graphics designed using Photoshop, the game is based on the original C64 version, Sensitive. The level data is taken straight from the original with just a few levels being modified. All the 60 brain-racking levels in this game are achievable and if you find yourself stuck on Level 10 like most people do, Jamie adds a little note at the bottom of his site's page where you can find the solution.
