Sony PSP - Image 1Remember the Music prx v0.54 app (formerly known as irsmp3.prx) that developer Joek2100 released a few days ago? The coder passed by the QJ.Net Forums earlier to inform the handheld community that the homebrew plugin has been updated to version 0.55.

In case you're wondering what this app does, it's a custom firmware plugin that allows you to play music while you're running a game or vsh.

This latest release contains a bug fix - the bug in question caused some of the mp3 files being played to hang at the end of the file. Aside from that, Joek2100 is letting the guys know about several features that are going to be added in the future:
  • auto enable the software decoder when the ME is in use, so playing mp3 can work with any homebrew that uses the me
  • improve the on screen display
  • add some sort of playlist in folder support (each subdir would be a separate playlist and you can switch between them, something like DJEK was talking about in the old thread)
  • add more formats
  • figure out how to get pops mode working
  • have button inputs that are used in the prx ignored by everything else
Music prx v0.55 has been successfully tested on CFWs 3.52-M33 (Team M33) and 3.40 OE (Dark AleX). The homebrew's author further warns that users should not try to clock the vsh to 222/111 - doing so may cause the vsh to crash. Usage and installation instructions are available in the file bundle's readme, and over at Joek2100 release thread in our PSP dev forums.

PSP Custom firmware plugin: Music prx v0.54 Beta - Image 1

Homebrew developer joek2100 has come out with a new beta version of Music prx. For those who haven't heard of it, Music prx is a custom firmware plugin that lets you play music on your PSP while running games and using the vsh.

There have actually been a couple of changes since the v0.50 release, so we've got the comprehensive changelog for versions 0.51 to 0.54:
  • 0.51: (beta)
    • Fixed a bug which would prevent playback in some games (You can now remove hw.prx, it is no longer used)
    • Since many people are reporting problems, I made this a "beta" version, I'll try and fix the bugs as soon as I can, see me last post in this thread for details
  • 0.52: (beta)
    • Fixed a bug which prevented some (I guess a lot) of atrac3 files from playing properly,
  • 0.53: (beta)
    • Fixed another bug making atrac3/atrac3 plus files not play, please update to this version before reporting any bugs, if you still have problems
  • 0.54 beta:
    • Removed the settings file because it was causing a problem
    • Added those settings into music_conf.txt
    • NOTE: In 3.40OE (and possibly other fws), setting the cpu speed > 222 will cause the vsh to not work/crash
    • This seems fixed in 3.52 M33-2
Users will definitely want to check out the included readme for instructions on installing the plugin as well as information on how to use it. In any case, give this plugin a try and see if it works for you. Enjoy!

PlayStation Portable - Image 1The last time we heard from PSP homebrew developer joek2100 was for the release of 2.71 SEB" MP3, otherwise known as the irsmp3 module, last January. Now the dev's back and has released a modified version of irsmp3, called Music prx v0.50.

Why the name change? According to joek2100, Music prx 0.50 has ATRAC3 support. For those who don't know what ATRAC3 is, it's a type of audio compression algorithm format used mostly by Sony-branded players.

In case you missed all the irsmp3 releases last year (or have forgotten), Music prx v0.50 is a "custom firmware plugin that allows you to play music while playing a game or using the vsh". There are a number of changes included in the readme file (PLEASE_READ_ME.txt) and the dev listed the important stuff on the release thread on the QJ Forums:
  • This has new hardware decoder will work with all umd games/the vsh/ and most homebrew. (Thanks to cooleyes)
  • It will not work with homebrew that uses the ME (SnesTYL ME, dosbox .71, etc)
  • It will not work with copy protected atrac3's
  • In the next release I'll have it switch back to the software decoder (mp3 only) when the ME is in use, but until then you'll have to use the non-ME version
  • Also when playing an mp3 that has a samplerate different from 44.1kHz, you need to pause the song before the vsh's video/music player will work
Anyway, joek2100 is open to bug reports and suggestions - you can visit the dev at the forums or post a comment below. The dev also left a couple of reminders in case you have any problems. According to the release, if you are having problems starting a game, you should try waiting for the game's main menu before playing music. Also, joek2100 gave a tip regarding error messages and errors in general: turn on the on screen display, and look for a line in blue.

Check out the download below and feel free to discuss Music prx 0.50 on the QJ Forums. As always, check out the readme for information on its installation and use. Enjoy!

PSP picjoek2100 has just updated his nifty MP3-playing homebrew app for the PSP, and this time, he's bumped it up to version 0.4f. If you were able to catch the previous version, you'll see that he's one of those coders who never quit on improving their work and really listens to the community's feedback.

So anyway, this version fixes even more bugs that have been encountered/reported including the bug that messes up the sound in the browser.

Changelog:
  • Fixed the wifi @ 333mHz for 3.03OE+
  • Fixed disable underclocking in vsh while the screen is off for 3.03OE+ (or higher)
  • Fixed a bug that messes up the sound in the browser (although something else may have been broken) (only works on 3.03OE+)
  • Fixed a bug (that was introduced in the last release) that broke suspend support
joek2100 also says:

In order to fix the no sound in the web browser bug I had to de-allocate an occupied channel (the psp has a max number and the webbrowser uses most of them), which means something else might not have sound.

As usual, we would suggest that you guys drop him a line on our forums if this happens to you, or any other glitch for that matter. Oh and of course, the ever-dependable readme.txt file is also there if you wanna find out more about this app.

Music to our ears...Joek2100 is at it again with yet another update for his 2.71 SEB'' MP3 module. It's only been a couple of days since his previous update, and he's done quite a lot for this new version.

This homebrew app lets you play music straight from the ms0:/PSP/MUSIC directory (unless you change the settings).

Here's some notes from Joek2100 on 2.71 SEB'' MP3 module v0.4e:
  • 0.4e: Fixed the on screen display in other display modes
  • Reduced the flicker of the on screen display
  • Added an option (see the config file) to disable the vsh from changing the clock speed when the screen turns off
  • Added a back to the CPU selection
  • (**NOTE: for some reason, the bus speed when going backwards is slower for speeds <222MHz than when going forwards)
  • (I don't think this is a big problem, but I will see if I can fix it later)
This version has a config file, "seplugins/mp3conf.txt" so you can just tweak that file to change some directory settings of where you want to play your music from.

EvilSeph, thanks for the tip! Have a happy new year!

PSPHere's another quick update for Joek2100's irsmp3 module. We mentioned last time that v0.4 would probably be the final version, but joek2100 decided to add a feature that lets users change the MP3 playback directory and add some custom controls of their own.

According to joek2100, he'll be looking into overclocking for the next release. The developer also says that he plans on fixing the display issues reported by some users "soon, either in the next release or the one after that." One more thing to look forward to for the PSP homebrew community.

This version can be used under 3.02OE-A. If you have comments and suggestions, just give the 'discuss' link below a click. Also, don't forget to check the readme file before installing this.

Update: Joek2100 has once again posted an update for his irsmp3 module. Here's what's new in version 0.4d:
  • Fixed overclocking for speeds > 222MHz
  • Made the 4th level brightness work by pressing the screen button
  • Added an option (see the config file) to allow overclocking and wireless to be used at the same time

PSPJoek2100 is back with another update for his 2.71 SEB'' irsmp3 module. According to Joek2100, this release - module v.04 - will probably be the final release except for bug fixes and updates for newer versions of open edition firmwares.

On to the nitty. The 2.71 SEB'' irsmp3 module is a modified version of the opensource mp3 prx for IRShell. It lets you play mp3 files from ms0:/PSP/MUSIC (you can listen to your own mp3s while playing some GTA, for example), and it also has random and sequential play modes, pause, next and a built-in "overclocker."

You will need to install the irsmp3.prx plugin found in the "seplugins" directory in the zip. If you're not sure how to install it, check out this QJ forum thread. According to joek2100, you can also copy the seplugins directory to the root of your memory stick if you don't have any other plugins installed.

This is for 3.02OE-A and has been tested with it.

Don't forget to check the readme file included in the download before you install this plugin. If you have any questions or comments regarding this release, don't hesitate to head on over to the QJ forum release thread for 2.71 SE-B'' MP3 module v0.4 by clicking on the "discuss" link below.

pspExactly a week after we brought you guys v0.3a of joek2100's 2.71 SE-B'' MP3 module, he's back yet again with an even better and improved release, module v0.3b.

For those who haven't been following these MP3 modules, basically, what it does is that it lets you choose and play your own stored music while in-game. No longer do you have to put up with the annoying music that some games (unfortunately) come with, because this baby right here brings you ultimate musical freedom baybee!

To install: 1) Copy the file to the PSP folders to the root of your memory stick. 2) Run UMFR2 For GAME mode and/or UMFR2 For VSH(XMB) mode depending on where you want the module to be loaded.

Easy, right? Now, we know we already told you about this before, but for the sake of those who may have missed it, joek2100 says that he has only tested this with 2.71 SEB'' with no custom gameboots/backgrounds/other prxs/etc and that these things may reduce compatibility or prevent the MP3 module from working properly. Oh, and also, he suggests waiting until a game is finished loading before you start playback.

That said, here's the changelog for v0.3b:
  • Added an independent volume button
  • Should make startup faster
  • Made the on screen display stay on when Note + Square is pressed
  • Added volume and filename to the on screen display
