Dissidia: Final Fantasy - Image 1One of the most anticipated titles for the PlayStation Portable this year is Square Enix'sDissidia: Final Fantasy. The game brings together stars from all of the main titles in the Final Fantasy franchise in one, big free-for-all where the victors will decide the fate of the world. For North American fans, the waiting ends in two days. To celebrate Dissidia's upcoming release, we've put together a little primer on the characters that comprise the game's roster. Today we have Part 1 of a two-part feature where we focus on the representatives of the first six Final Fantasies, so dig right in. Be warned, however: spoilers abound.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy - Image 1Just as promised, we finally got translations from the Dissidia Ultimania guide we reported on yesterday. Here, we get a blow-by-blow (-by-blow-by-blow-by-blow...) account on the EX modes of all 20 main characters in the game - buttons you have to press, timing sequences, bars, gauges and all that. Oh, and TLDR, my foot! If you're an FF-geek, consider this a crash course on 20 years' worth of limit breaks, final attacks, and the lot. This is, after all, about Dissidia's characters' EX Modes. That's where you get to unleash hell on your opponent.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy - Image 1If you're one of the lucky few (aww, paint me green with envy!) to get a Japanese copy of Dissidia come launch day, then this might come in handy: the first Dissidia guidebook will be published on the same day as the game's release in Japan, December 18. Of course, it's printed in Japanese (barring a few noticeable roman letters, usually in all caps like SQUARE ENIX or PSP or... VICTORY or some such) - so if you're considering getting one, make sure you'll be able to use it to its full extent. Besides, you did buy a Japanese game, yes?

Dissidia: Final Fantasy - Image 1 If last week, we saw Shonen Jump feature the FF6 duo, this week it's Famitsu's turn to bring Terra Branford and Kefka Palazzo into the Dissidia: Final Fantasy spotlight. There are a lot of things revealed in today's scans, so we'll take it blow-by-blow: Terra and Kefka's EX modes, new summons, the game's main menu, Game Install options, and a couple other miscellaneous items. Oh, plus a cameo of Cloud!

Dissidia: Final Fantasy - Image 1In an interview, Dissidia senior director Ken Arakawa reveals their plans for TGS. Not only will they be bringing a playable demo, but apparently, if all things go accordingly, the full roster will finally be revealed. Which means... if any of you wanna do some speculating, this is you last chance before we get confirmation! (and here I am, still hoping for Ultros or Opera Vectra to show up...)

PSP Dissidia: Final Fantasy - Image 1Random enemy encounters are like so last year. Dissidia: Final Fantasy's encounter system is different though, and it sort of takes some elements from FFX's Sphere Grid and FFXII's License Board - minus the micromanagement aspect (whew!). Dissidia employs a chessboard-type system to guide your character around the "world map" - read the full article for more info as well as a gameplay video of Garland vs. Warrior of Light.
