A transport tycoon busy at work in OpenTTD - Image 1Despite thorough testing, bugs may still rear their ugly heads after a game's release, hence the constant need to update a game in order to make the player's gaming experience more pleasant.

Jaime Peñalba has done exactly that with OpenTTD v0.5.3, including having fixed a nasty thorn in the side of players who preferred to play tycoon with background music switched on. More on what's new in OpenTTD 0.5.3 after the jump.

PSP homebrew developer Jaime Peñalba dropped us a line earlier here at QJ.NET to announce that he's releasing a new version of OpenTTD for play. OpenTTD, for those asking is an open source port version of Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon Deluxe PC game (circa 1994). Jaime is specifically responsible for developing OpenTTD's PSP port.

OpenTTD v0.5.2 has been successfully tested on 1.50, 3.XX OE, and M33 firmwares and carries these latest fixes since its previous release:
  • Opent TTD logo - Image 1 Code updated to 0.5.2 to be able to play on latest online servers
  • Game crash when suspending fixed
  • Native PSP sound effects driver developed instead of using SDL_mixer
  • Fixed sound & music mixer volumes
  • Sound effects speedup bug fixed
  • Replace trains window resized to fit psp screen
  • Extra viewport window resized to fit psp screen
  • PSP dedicated server upgraded to 0.5.2
Jaime reminds would-be users you will need to install certain files from the original TTD PC game to run OpenTTD v0.5.2. Guys interested in more information are advised to check out the file bundle's readme for installation and usage instructions and Jaime's contact details. Also make sure to keep an eye out for v0.5.3, which is expected to come out soon.

OpenTTD - Image 1

PSP owning Transport Tycoon fans will be happy to hear that the latest port of OpenTTD, the freeware version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe for the PSP now has come to a final version with OpenTTD 0.5.0. The good news is that unlike some of the previous release candidates this version is very stable and comes with a lot of changes. Here's the changelog:
  • Feature: Add the ability to load newer TTDP games (the tile information for coasts has changed) (r8738)
  • Feature: Selecting "end of orders" and deleting will delete all the vehicle's orders (shared mode unchanged) (r8685)
  • Codechange: Call GetFirstVehicleInChain only for trains thus increasing performance in large games (r8744)
  • Fix: Possible crashes, problems with aircraft and airport removal (r8921)
  • Fix: Do not show the 'edit sign' window for spectators (r8808)
  • Fix: Adhere order types for ship order insertion to determine destination type (r8802)
  • Fix: It was possible to take over buoys by building a station next to them (r8794)
  • Fix: Cloning unaware of articulated locomotives that could refit without refitting the front unit (r8777)
  • Fix: Loading times for overhanging trains are miscomputed (r8709)
OpenTTD has been tested on and supports firmware 1.50 as well as 3.XX OE firmwares. Other firmwares/mods that are able to run 1.50 executables with kernel access should work too. Installation instructions can be found in the readme, and one thing to make sure of when you're playing this game is that you have enough battery life - it's quite addictive!

OpenTTD

Jaime has updated his homebrew game OpenTTD for the PSP to include keyboard support. This version is a preview of what the full release candidate 5 should include, and adds a few new features, including:
  • Key shortcut added for network chat (select + right)
  • Code updated to v0.4.7, compatible with latest version network servers
  • Added keyboard support using PSP OSK
To write text, make sure that the cursor is over a textbox and then press select + Left. It wont work if there is no active textbox/inputbox. Here's what Jamie said: "Currently keyboard support will only work on single player, you can use it on multiplayer, but you will be disconnected from the game, it will be fixed on RC5. Code has been also updated to 0.4.7 to keep compatibility with latest version PC players".

Don't forget to read the included README.txt for installation instructions and list of controls. Also take a look at our FAQ or forums for troubleshooting and more info. The source code will be released with the next release candidate. Although named 'RC5' these downloads are development versions, and don't represent the full quality of RC5.
