PSPTV

Heads up to mEo for another PSP homebrew app released. This new app is a step-by-step guide that lets you install various TV programs into your PSP without having to tweak a lot of settings to get them streaming right. Simple, eh?

The PSP TV Setup Helper uses TVU Player, TVC Media Player, and the PSP application PMP VLC. All you really need to do is download it now or ask mEo in the forum thread below if some thing in the app stumps you. Otherwise, here goes the download link. Check it out.

Talk about comprehensive! Bebe has sent us a tip of his discovery: a way to stream TV from TVU player to the PSP. He even sent us a link to a video (which we can assume would also be him, since the user name for it is bebeboouk).

The process itself needs a couple of things before you can try to stream anything, so take note of the following:
You'll need to mess around with the code in the PMP.ini file to get it to work properly, but his guide in the readme lists all the steps, so you don't miss a thing. You can also look at the video below for a visual perspective to getting it to stream. The one thing he mentions that you might not like is the need to get back to the computer if you want to change channels, but it could be worked around in the future. For now, at least, you can lounge around away from the computer if you feel like watching a TV movie or the entire first season of My Little Pony (if it happens to be on the TV that day).

In the meantime, try it out, see if it works with other firmwares, and let him know (email in the readme!) your thoughts or offers of assistance. Enjoy!

PMP VLC BGMany have been wowed by jockywoo2001's PMP VLC because of its ability to play media files from the memory stick and from Optixx's PMP Server via WiFi. The app's ability to play media files transcoded and streamed from VLC 0.8.5 via WiFi, eliminating the need to first manually transcode and copy files to the memory before you can access the media files is also one reason why PSP owners have been taken by PMP VLC. Now, with v0.0.9, jockywoo2001 makes sure there are more reasons to continue loving the PMP VLC Player.

The latest version now has hardware video decoding support. How is this a wonderful thing? With the supplied VLC 0.8.5 plus x264 support for PSP, you can now see live TV and DVDs on your PSP in high quality...meaning 25 frames per second and in full screen (480x272)! The awesome additions to v0.0.9 doesn't end there. Rest of the changelog goes:

1) Scaling now works correctly (pressing start during playback toggles screen mode if picture resolution < 480x272).
2) Pressing right trigger in main menu now connects to network and the IP address is shown.
3) Up to five video and five music directories can be added in pmp.ini.
4) Network path no longer displayed in filenames, except for the selected entry.
5) The supplied VLC 0.8.5 package automatically installs the required pspfiles.html file.
6) Solved several vlc and net directory buffer issues where there was nonsense at the end of the listing.
7) The supplied VLC 0.8.5 can be used to encode video files, DVDs, live streams, capture device sources etc. to AVC avi files.
8) Fixed a bug where the previous track in the playlist was played again.

Now, you must note that there is a bit of difference in the installation procedure for this new version. Here are the news steps:

1) If you have another VLC version installed, first uninstall it and make sure to delete preferences and cache (delete directory c:Documents and Settings"yournamehere"Application Datavlc).

2) Install the supplied VLC 0.8.5 on your PC. The file is called vlc-0.8.5-psp-x264-win32.exe in the VLC directory of the distribution. Jockywoo2001 notes, "Sorry this is for windows only. Someone has to (cross-)compile versions for Mac and Linux. Maybe if I have time I will do it myself."

3) On windows create a shortcut to vlc.exe where target looks like this: "D:Program FilesVideoLANVLCvlc.exe" --extraintf=http (note that your path may be different from the one provided by the developer). On other platforms make sure that vlc is started with the parameters: --extraintf=http

4) copy the PMP VLC binaries to your PSP (/PSP/GAME/PMPVLC009_JockyW and PMPVLC009_JockyW%)

5) Edit pmp.ini and copy it to /PSP/GAME/PMPVLC009_JockyW

6) Copy the file VLC-ENABLE.AVI (in the VLC directory of the distribution) to your memstick in /PSP/VIDEO/.

A few reminders from jockywoo2001. First, before playing AVC live streams, VLC-ENABLE.avi should be played from the memory stick. And to test installation, you should first try to play VLC-ENABLE.avi from memstick. No matter what the settings in pmp.ini are, the video should play. Speaking of pmp.ini, settings file in it have been changed. As jockywoo2001 shares, "pmp.ini now contains a switch to enable AVC, and set horizontal and vertical resolution to 480x272 if you use AVC".

Take note that because of the inclusion of the modified VLC 0.8.5 (which you needed to download separately before), the download of PMP VLC is now at 10MB. If that's no problem, go ahead and click on the downloads below. Just make sure to check out the readme file to get more info on how to tinker this cool app!

PMPModWho doesn't love Jonny's homebrew app, the PMPMod? The app, as many of you already know, is an AVC media player for the PSP. We all know that it's a breakthrough in the homebrew arena not only because of its functions but also because this app has been the inspiration of some developers who have been giving us homebrew apps that show tremendous promise -- such as jockyw2001's app, the PMP VLC Player. Jonny, the good developer, was even kind enough to share the source code of the app.

To add to the growing list of developers inspired by Jonny's work is headache. The new developer just released his first homebrew (so be nice y'all!) which is a mod of Jonny's recent work, the PMPMod AVC v1.02. According to headache, "I really really love the new PMPMod AVC 1.02 (using it everyday on my way to work) but it was lacking the very useful feature to save the current video position when stopping the video playback. That feature i knew from an older PMPMod release (modded by malloc?)."

So with that predicament at hand, he took matters into his own hands by "taking the latest AVC 1.02 sources I could find (the ones from Raphael with subtitle enhancements) and re-adding the ".POS file" saving/restoring code. I must admit I am not sure who initially coded that, so props to that coder!" Although this is just a mod of the original version, it is of course a welcome addition to the homebrew world. With that, don't hesitate to dish out your constructive suggestions, opinions, and criticisms through your comments.

*UPDATE: The missing .ini file in the download has now been included. Go ahead and click on the link below and enjoy this DickyDick1969 app! (Thanks, NorthernFusion for the heads up!)

The recent release of jockyw2001's PMP VLC Player may have been one of DickyDick1969's inspirations in improving his homebrew app, the PiMPStreamer. This time, he has updated the latest PiMPStreamer v0.65. What is new? Now, the app sports subtitles! Again, this update is for firmware 1.5 only, but he is really working hard to bring out the goodness of PiMPStreamer to other firmwares, so watch out for updates.

Although the team he is rooting for to win the World Cup (The Netherlands) loss in part because of some questionable calls by the officials, he was able to shrug it off to bring to life this update. According to the good developer, "I merged the code from Raphael so there is now a SUB supported PiMPStreamer. At special request from a great donater. To use SUB files, place the sub file in the PSP/VIDEO and play the movie. If your movie to be streamed is called sometitle.avi the subtitle file has to be named sometitle.avi.SUB. It only works with full fps streaming and without time skip." Nice!

Here is a screenshot of the updated PiMPStreamer in action (Guess what he's streaming...). Don't you worry if the subtitle is blurry in this pic for according to DickyDick, "the blurriness is because I can’t take pictures." As always, your constructive criticisms, observations, and suggestions about this app will be well appreciated by DickyDick1969. So feel free to tell us what you think through your comments, for they will surely not fall on deaf ears.

Update: Some of you may have noticed that the important .ini file was missing from the download. Well, thank goodness that DickyDick1969 reads your comments! According to the good developer, "I’ve placed the pmp.ini file back in.. Due to the merge I misplaced the location (it looks into /pmp.ini instead :~),  so i recompiled." So now, you can download the complete homebrew app without the hassles! Enjoy and don't forget to tell us what you think about it.

VLC BGThese homebrew geniuses really work fast. Three days after releasing v0.0.7 of his PMP VLC, jockywoo2001 is back with v0.0.8. To those who are hearing about this great application for the first time, let me brief you on PMP VLC's capabilities.

Running on a lot of platforms - Linux, Windows, and Mac - jockywoo2001's app plays media files from the memory stick (video from PSP/VIDEO and music from PSP/MUSIC) and from Optixx's PMP Server via WiFi (Python required).

The list of mediafiles that can be played by this application doesn't end there. Jockywoo2001 brags that the ability of the PMP VLC Player to play mediafiles transcoded and streamed from VLC v0.8.5 (required) via WiFi is something that makes this application "really new". As he explains, "You can now play mediafiles on your PSP which are stored on your PC, with no need to first manually transcode and copy them to memstick.... The transcoding is done by VLC in real time (that is if your PC is fast enough.... The PMP VLC client controls your VLC server: you can open a file for playback, pause, stop and seek (forward, rewind) it. Streaming protocol is http via tcp."

Now the latest version has a few improvements that will make PMP VLC fans and new users happy. DVD and (S)VCD streaming from PC to PSP has been added. Music in PMP server mode can now be played in original format without the need for transcoding. Also, left trigger in main screen toggles between PMP server and VLC server. There are now separate entries in pmp.ini for ip and port for VLC and PMP server.

This latest version of PMP VLC Player uses the latest ffmpeg ogg routines and can now use mp3 in OGG container. Also new in this app is the network connection diagnostic info.

Take note as well that VLC 0.8.5 is required to run this program; ergo, location of pspfiles.html have been changed. Hence, here are the new installation procedures:

1) Install VLC 0.8.5 on your PC (get the download below). If you have an older version uninstall it and make sure to delete preferences and cache.

2) On Windows, create a shortcut to vlc.exe where target looks like this:
"D:Program FilesVideoLANVLCvlc.exe" --extraintf=http --sout-transcode-fps 25.0000
(note that your path may be different from jockywoo2001's).
On other platforms make sure that vlc is strated with the parameters:
--extraintf=http --sout-transcode-fps 25.0000

3) Copy VLC/pspfiles.html to D:ProgramFilesVideoLANVLChttpoldadmin

4) Rename or remove the file .access if it exists in D:Program FilesVideoLANVLChttpoldadmin (it allows for password access control which the author does not currently support).

5) Copy the PMP VLC binaries to your PSP (/PSP/GAME/PMPVLC008_JockyW and PMPVLC008_JockyW%)

6) Edit pmp.ini and copy it to /PSP/GAME/PMPVLC008_JockyW

For more info on the PMP VLC Player, just click here. Or you can always open the README file included in the download; it's been tidied, by the way, for easy reading.
