PSP MSX v1.2.1 by Zx-81 - Image 1 PSP MSX v1.2.1 by Zx-81 - Image 2

Homebrew developer Zx-81 dropped by the QJ.NET forums earlier to announce the release of the final build for PSPMSX, the PSP port of the the MSX, MSX2, and MSX2+ 8bit home computer emulator. The application is based on the original fMSX emulator by Marat Fayzullin, which in turn was eventually ported to SDL by Vincent van Dam. Here are the latest changes to this application since PSPMSX v1.2.0:
  • New render fast mode (original msx size but faster)
  • Option to prevent the blue led to be displayed when
  • L or R are pressed
  • Remove .png file when removing state file
  • Bug fix: random pixels colors on screen borders
  • IR keyboard works now also with in the keyboard settings/mapping menu
As with all of Zx-81's applications, we advise users to go through the readme included with the file bundle first - all installation and user instructions are included there. If you follow the instructions properly, you'll be playing your copy of PuyoPuyo before you know it. Enjoy the download, and keep on the lookout in case Zx-81 makes a surprise update for this PSP-based emulator.

PSPMSX v1.1.0. Now is this Gradius or Nemesis - oh wait, they're the same game. - Image 1Guess the break's been officially over for some time. After PSPThom last week, and the PSPSSH, Zx-81 updates PSPMSX to v1.1.0, its "Beyond Borders" version - anyway, that's what I'm calling it, not his terminology.

"Beyond Borders" because the central feature of v1.1.0 is that you don't need to restart PSPMSX to change the MSX model anymore. "Beyond Borders" because of the other central feature: the option to toggle between PAL and NTSC settings.

Is that Gradius we see in your screencap, Zx? Oh, wait - a.k.a. Nemesis across the water?

Two other additions to the changelog are the option to change the RAM size and a bugfix in the max render mode. All instructions for installation and usage are in the Readme, but you know the drill by now, right? Click on download link, extract, read Readme, install...

*UPDATE!* One minor fix before Zx-81 can take five. After people noticed that v1.0.8 (ultimate) had some issues with Snatcher, he worked over to produce v1.0.9: the Snatcher bugfix. Even the pic we used below (from Zx) has been changed to reflect this update. And, as Zx himself closes his release posts, enjoy!

Quality control: now PSPMSX v1.0.9 will play Snatcher. - Image 1Zx-81 has dropped by our forums to drop off, and we quote: "*Wink* PSPMSX: MSX Emulator for PSP v1.0.8 (ultimate)." We really quote - the wink smiley was there. Does "ultimate" mean that Zx's MSX emulator doesn't get better than this? (It just did: check the *Update!* above)

And dang, hasn't Zx been a busy little bee lately. With all of his homebrew emulator releases, like boom, boom, BOOM!, and now this BOOM. But it doesn't end here, because there's one more boom to cover before Zx takes a well-deserved rest. But before we get there, the deets on v1.0.8 (ultimate), and then the download and discuss links:
  • Add option to enable the sound and musix chips (FM-AM and Music modules) required by several games. It's slow down the emulator, so use it with care.
  • Add a new render mode (max) to fit the entire MSX screen
  • Add missing MSX keys (thanks to Creepy)
  • Fix 3.10-OE black screen bug in smooth mode (thanks to Creepy for his feedback)

Screenshot - Image 1 It seems that dev Zx-81 is on a emulator binge. Just hours after releasing PSP2600 v1.0.4 Atari 2600 emulator to the homebrew community, he follows up by announcing several updates to his PSPMSX app's previous version, bringing it to v1.07.

As the name implies, this application is an MSX emulator for the PSP, and traces its lineage to the fMSX emulator by Marat Fayzullin. This app will run MSX/MSX2/MSX2+ on various platforms like Windows and Unix aside from the PSP,and comes with these latest changes:
  • A new graphical engine with new smoother render modes! It uses now the PSP GU for rendering, it does not run faster, but it's a lot smoother.
  • Old "soft" render modes are still available, because these are a bit faster.
  • Save state dates are displayed in the emulator window (it's now easier to identify and to load the right save state slot)
  • Add help menu
  • Bug fix (load default keyboard mapping on startup)
  • Bug fix in Rom file requester
  • Bug fix in keyboard handle
Make sure to view the README for full installation instructions, and remember to visit the release thread to thank Zx-81 for his work - it's just the thing you'll need to complement your Portable Ops with the original Metal Gear game.
