Kungfro v0.1 - Image 1Kungfro v0.1 is Calus CoRPS first foray into Lua programming for the PSP. A side-scrolling fighter, while simplistic - players can so far only jump and punch, the AI just begs to get hit, and so forth - the main feature of this game is its online versus component. As a first release, there are bound to be a few bugs to iron out, although he did have youresam's help in getting online running in the game.

Calus CoRPS also gives credit to the Sonic Battle Arena team for part of the A.I./attack code (it's only fair to cite that). Readme contains instructions for installation (you will need Lua Player to run this); and here are the controls for the game:
  • x is to jump
  • square is to punch
  • start is to exit

If you aren't yet feeling festive this season, then this little homebrew offering should cheer you up and change even the biggest of Scrooges into budding Santas. Vaza from our forums has released a special Christmas edition of his Sonic Battle Arena game for the PSP which received so much attention when it went online back in July.

Technically there isn't anything festive about this release, but 'tis the season to be jolly so Vaza has decided to release this version of SBA as a sort of preview as to what you can expect from the game in the future. We know you want to know what's new, so here's your very own Christmas present from Vaza:
  • Added defending
  • Power Bar representation
  • Several AI tweaks
  • Several AI animation fixes
  • 2 More levels
  • 1 Level with special environments
  • Enemy is now strong enough to win
  • Added springs
  • Health bar power ups added (Green Hill only)
  • New characters: Shadow, Chaos and Rogue!
Unfortunately this release does not include an options menu or online play because Vaza has had to remove them during development - but it should be added again in the future. There are some bugs in this release in the AI, animation, and enemy defence department, details of which can be found in the readme included. In comparison though with the last Sonic Battle Arena release, this project has improved dramatically in quality of gameplay.

We know how sad you must be feeling because of the loss of online play in this version, so here is Vaza's response which may cheer you up a little:

Sonic Battle Arena: Message from Vaza

Catch the download right here, but don't forget to give feedback on this game in the comments or in our forums. Also, don't forget to wish Vaza a Merry Christmas and a Happy Birthday when he turns 15 on December 24.

Sonic Battle Arena 1

TheMarioKarters, Vaza, youresam and Popcorn Devil have released a new version of their amazing homebrew game eagerly anticipated by all - Sonic Battle Arena, updating it to include online play thanks to netlib and youresam! This makes SBA the PSPs first online fighting homebrew title, and boy does it live up to the title. In Sonic Battle Arena, the ultimate Sonic fighting game coded in Lua, you control one of 5 Sonic characters currently available: Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Cream or Amy; fighting to the death as it is against your opponent.

The game itself is pretty simple to pick up and play, using the D-pad for movement, X button to attack and O to jump. You may have been playing against a computer in the last release, but now you get to fully test your skills up against real humans. This is still a beta, so expect some bugs. The only negative I can find from this game is that you don't know who you are playing against, neither can you talk to them. Surely if your playing against either TheMarioKarters, Vaza, or Popcorn Devil you're going to lose!

Here's what TMK said:

What happens is, once you press R at the main menu, you select your character with the D-Pad, then press X. You'll then connect to Netlib using Connection 1. Be sure your WLAN switch is on! After you select your character, two things can happen. If someone is waiting, you will join them. If no one is waiting to play, you will wait for someone to join. To cancel waiting for someone, press start, dont do anything else.

Don't run away with the download just yet, because I have some more information for you all. Remember the downside of not being able to see who you're playing against? In the next version, the SBA team plan to add some kind of chatroom, so you can actually talk to the person you are beating!
