Doom is probably one of the few titles that has been ported many times by the ever hardworking homebrew coders we have around. Just like today, QJ.NET reader CJ sent us word regarding another iteration from Chilly Willy. The coder gave this explanation for this release:
Here's my conversion of ADoomPPC, one of the better DOOM conversions (for the Amiga). It's got a simple, decent gui that runs before you start the game which allows you to set most of the major DOOM settings. On the Slim PSP, it supports TV out. This arc includes the source, two sets of MIDI instruments and the shareware WAD file. This really is a good development for the homebrew scene because most consider Doom as one of the forerunners of the FPS genre. Chilly Willy added that while this was created on PSP Slim & lite running on CFW 3.71 M33-2, it has also been tested on PSP Fat running on CFW 3.52 M33-4. For those of you who are wondering, Chilly Willy's Doom for the PSP doesn't work with networking and cheats. Download: Doom for the PSP |

PSP homebrew developer Abhoth just announced that Kosmodrones is up and ready for download. We've heard about the game a few days ago, which offered much promise as a side-scrolling shooter that took cues from Amiga classics Turboraketti and Gravity Force. Abhoth did mention that the game will be out soon, but we're more than glad that it's already here. Looking at the trailers alone would tell you that the team members behind Kosmodrones spent time on it. The game itself is a nice ride. You'll get two folders from the download, but feel free to drop them down both to the Game 150 folder. For those too excited to check out the controls, here's what you need to know:

PSP homebrew developer Abhoth dropped by our forums to announce an upcoming game called Kosmodrones. It's a racing homebrew game and judging from what we saw of the teaser, it shows bucketfuls of promise. According to the Kosmodrones website, the game was based on "Amiga classics like Turboraketti and Gravity Force". It definitely brought back memories of other retros like Thrust and Subterrania. If you're unfamiliar with that sort of gameplay, it's basically like this: you're controlling a ship on a course of various obstacles and you'll need to control your ship by the using the boosters and swivelling at opportune times. Anyway, the development of Kosmodrones was a team effort headed presumably by Abhoth (code, game design, audio, and music). The members are as follow: Frodefrank and Lukelok (graphics and game design), Polkapixel (graphics), Insertwittyname (online highscore system), Raphael (video support), and Circular (music). Abhoth noted that the game is going to be released to the public soon, though there wasn't a specific date given. It's probably safe to assume that Kosmodrones is coming this month as that was shown in the teaser trailer. While we're all waiting to try out the said game, check out the screenshots that showcase the different tracks or races available in the game. After which, you can go over to Kosmodrones' official website and check out the teaser trailer. We'll be keeping a close eye on this one so stay tuned.

PSP homebrew developer NoRiGoLo dropped dropped by the QJ.NET Forums earlier to let the community in on an interesting project just waiting to viewed, dubbed Recession Maxidemo. This production is neither a game nor an application, but rather is a PSP-based demoscene. A demoscene, for the guys asking, is a computer art subculture that involves creating non-interactive light-and-sound productions that are run real-time on a computer. It was a very popular trend among Amstrad CPC, Atari ST or Amiga systems back in the early to mid-90s, with Recession Maxidemo here meant to be something of a revival of that era. This demo has been confirmed to work on PSPs running on custom firmware 3.40 OE - just load it to your game folder as you would with most other homebrew applications and games, and enjoy the show. Of course, we also invite readers to drop by NoRiGoLo's thread over at the PSP Dev forums here at QJ.NET in case they want to discuss this release. Retro gamers, gather around. The PSPUAE Development Team has just released the newest version of the Ubiquitous Amiga Emulator, now called PSPUAE v0.63 Birthday Edition. We're sure a lot of you have been waiting for this release as the last update was January. Hopefully, they've worked out the kinks and bugs with the help of their beta testers. Why a Birthday Edition? Well, it's been a year since PSPUAE started and the devs released the newest version to celebrate the fact. Dev team member FOL announced the release over at the team's official site and noted the memory increase. According to the dev, "there will be some big states uploaded that were made for this version. 1 of the largest being 10.5 Megs." Here are the changes made to PSPUAE v0.63 and who did what on the team:

We don't know if you still remember, but homebrew coder Atien ported the Commodore Amiga video game title Frontier Elite II to the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The homebrew game became known as Frontier 1337, and just like we said, it has almost been a year since the last update.
Frontier Elite II is actually a sequel to 1980s classic Frontier. In its core, the franchise is basically a space trading game with combat and role-playing scenarios. To put it in today's terms, it belongs to the sandbox genre of video games. You can be a trader, a bounty hunter, or even a member of the navy. The game only ends when you want it to. In case you want to know, Atien used Tom Morton's source code of his GLFrontier PC port in creating Frontier 1337. Anyway, judging from the changelog below, we could say that the game has really come a long way after its hiatus. Take a look:
