Frontier 1337 was created by Atien - Image 1

We don't know if you still remember, but homebrew coder Atien ported the Commodore Amiga video game title Frontier Elite II to the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The homebrew game became known as Frontier 1337, and just like we said, it has almost been a year since the last update.

Frontier Elite II is actually a sequel to 1980s classic Frontier. In its core, the franchise is basically a space trading game with combat and role-playing scenarios. To put it in today's terms, it belongs to the sandbox genre of video games. You can be a trader, a bounty hunter, or even a member of the navy. The game only ends when you want it to.

In case you want to know, Atien used Tom Morton's source code of his GLFrontier PC port in creating Frontier 1337. Anyway, judging from the changelog below, we could say that the game has really come a long way after its hiatus. Take a look:
  • The game is now running at 333MHz.
  • The music has been enabled.
  • All WAV sounds and OGG music have been re-sampled to 44100Hz and are now working perfectly.
  • All sub-folders (but savs) have been moved to data folder.
  • The Fkeys highlighter has been turned from red to black for not interfering with the intro and outro of the game.
Take note that the download below contains the game itself plus the music and SFX packs. It also has an extensive Readme file for installation instruction on FW 1.5 and custom firmwares OE.

If you owned a Commodore Amiga and spent hours and hours playing Frontier: Elite 2, you probably were excited when you read about the game being ported to PSP with the homebrew game Frontier 1337. Here's more reason to rejoice: Atien, the developer, has just released an update.

Frontier 1337 v0.1c is still a beta version so the framerate is still slow. However, with this update, if you set the level of shape detail to 'low' in the set-up screen you will get a better framerate result. Also, if you think the 'Space dust, clouds, etc.' and 'Background stars' are distracting, you'll be able to disable them with v0.1c.

Controls for Frontier 1337 are as follows:
  • Analog-stick - Moves the cursor across the screen.
  • - Serves as the left mouse-click and selects things with the cursor.
  • - Serves as the right mouse-click.
  • Hold + Analog-stick - Rolls the vessel.
  • Hold + - Fires laser beam.
  • Hold + D-pad UP - Zooms in with camera in external view.
  • Hold + D-pad DOWN - Zooms out with camera in external view.
  • D-pad - Rotates the camera in external view and unravels the galactic chart and the stock market list.
  • - Makes the rear propulsion increase speed.
  • - Makes the front propulsion decrease speed.
  • L and R triggers - Lets you choose functions that were available with the F1 to F10 keys on the PC version.
  • L + R - Validate the chosen function.
  • Hold + L + R when function is F8 - Force hyperspace miss-jump. ---> not yet seen in this version.
  • Start - Option screen.
  • Select - "p" key for now. (Atien notes: "Danzeff OSK will be implemented here in the future.")
In the future releases of his Frontier 1337, Atien promises a revised control panel. He is also trying to see if he can incorporate any homogeneous characters. He'll also be keeping the widescreen resolution so expect the next versions to be rendered directly in 480x272 resulting in a wider vision field. While waiting for Atien's visions to materialize, click on the download link below and enjoy the fresh release!
