You cant beat the classic Atari games when it comes to replay value, and with the release of Atari Classics Evolved on the PlayStation Portable it's guaranteed to keep you glued to your handhelds just to beat your high score ("just a bit more, a bit more... oh noooooes!"). Here are two new gameplay videos for the game, featuring Super Breakout and Tempest, to join the likes of Missile Command, Asteroids, Battlezone and Centipede.
As some of you might remember, Super Breakout plays like Pong, only you destroy bricks instead of having to volley the ball around with another player. Meanwhile, Tempest is a shoot-em-up game that emulates a 3D thmosphere. It's like Galaga, only simpler in graphics, but semi-3D in nature. Check out the vids for yourself! Atari Classics Evolved will be released on November 15.

All of the games included in the collection will be available both in original and evolved versions. Evolved versions will feature the same gameplay but will have enhanced graphics. As his entry to this year's XtreamLua contest, The Underminer has released Galactic Breakout, a brick-breaking homebrew game for the PSP. The game features a variety of bricks with different properties, 11 collectible bonuses and 70 levels. Players can also make their own levels using the level editor and submit their highest scores to an online rankings board. Check out the images below for the controls. The one on the left is for the level editor, while in-game controls are on the right. There's no readme file included in the downloads so here are the instructions. Just download the appropriate archive below and extract the contents of the 1.0 or 1.5 folder (depending on your PSP's firmware version) to your PSP's GAME folder. During part 2 of N'Gai Croal's interview with EA CEO Larry Probst, the CEO voiced his opinion on matters regarding the PSP. For one thing he says that when it comes to the PSP, they're not really keen on making original content for Sony's handheld. He says: It's more likely that we would target platforms like the PS3, Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii if we had an original in mind. Our strategy on PSP has typically been to take the franchises that we build on other platforms and exploit them on the PSP. I think the price point needs to be lower, and I think you're going to see that next year, along with a different form factor. Of course he goes on the clarify that they don't really know what Sony's plans are but, according to him, it wouldn't be surprising if they had a lowered price unit at US$ 149 and a more fully-featured upscale unit at US$ 249 or US$ 299. According to him, the compelling argument to get games for the PSP is that it's portable. However he does also say that he agrees to the thought that if someone own Madden on multiple systems already, say one for the PS2 and one for the 360, then they're less likely to buy Madden on the PSP. He says that if you're looking for a PSP breakout hit, it really has to be something original or unique to the platform. That's not EA's strategy for now though. So what is their plan for the PSP? Here's his words: We're interested in interoperability between PSP and Sony's other platforms, and if we can do something along those lines, that would be helpful. While it's a bit of a downer to hear that another company isn't interested in making original content for the PSP, it is pseudo good news to hear that they're looking to take advantage of the PSP-PS3 connection. A mobile way to control your PS3 game perhaps? Time will tell. |

If you've already played Treasure Island Dizzy, based on the original 1987 game Dizzy by Codemasters or the virtual crossword game X word, then you're already familiar with Shallan's impressive resume.
Here's another PSP flash game from him called Portaball. Playing around it for while gave me a quick impression that it is a clone of the classic Breakout game, where you bounce the ball using a paddle to prevent it from falling and in turn bashing all the bricks above it. Having studied some flash myself, I know that making this one is not that easy. Well, after all the game is not entirely graphics-based so I guess just a little tweak here and there will make this game better than its already-cool state. Overall, I think that it's a pretty decent flash game for your PSP.
However, for those that want a cut-throat highly competitive game, you might want to pass on this one, but if you have more than enough time to spare, this is something that you can play to kill some of it. Looking forward to more games from you Shallan! Shallan has hosted this one (along other of his flash-based games) in his PSP-formatted website. It is, however, on free hosting making the site prone to chrashes. If you intend to play it regularly, we suggest you download the .swf file and put it on your memory stick. Then, to play the game, simply type in "file:/PSP/*Insert directory here*/Portaball.swf on your PSP's web browser. If you download it using your PSP's File->Save link target function, you can access it from "file:/PSP/COMMON/Portaball.swf". Download: [Portaball] |
