Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld - Image 1For those of you who are interested in off-beat FPS homebrew, developer VettaCossX-AlphA has come up with one uniquely themed FPS game based on charnold's PSP Dungeons 3D v0.6. Titled Icon KillerZ vs1 (The Mario Massacre), we probably don't have to paint a pretty picture for you to understand what the game is about. More in the full article.

Frack Mod IV: An FPS that will blow your socks off - Image 1 Frack Mod IV: An FPS that will blow your socks off - Image 2 Frack Mod IV: An FPS that will blow your socks off - Image 3

Homebrew developer Frack contacted us about his latest take on charnold's PSP Dungeons 3D, Frack Mod IV. This game looks really good and is comparable with some of the commercially made first person shooters out there .

The controls of the game can take some time getting used to as it doesn't follow the normal FPS conventions. The right trigger is used for moving forward , square and circle are used for strafing, the down button for moving back, X to fire, and triangle to reload. After a couple of games though, it should become nothing but second nature to you guys.

The skins for the opponents should be very familiar to Deathmatch veterans, with Geiger's Alien and the Eyeball from Quake three being among the more notable ones. If you've been playing an older version of the game, Frack posted on his website a list of the changes implemented in this latest build:
  • New Multicolor / Enhanced Polices
  • New Cross
  • New PSP Icon With Sound In XMB
  • New Blood Effects
  • Reworked Skins/ Maps
  • Stronger Enemies
  • Multi levels Scrollings / Visual Effects
  • New Level
All in all, Frack did a great job with this mod and you'll be missing out if you don't at least give it a try. If you plan on downloading the program, be sure to head over to Frack's website through our read link for full installation instructions.

PSP Gallery Demo made with the Dungeons Engine 2 - Image 1

PSP homebrew developer charnold, who is known for his work on the homebrew PSP Dungeons, has come out with a rather impressive tech demo of his Dungeons Engine 2. The PSP Gallery Demo shows off the improvements that were made to the engine such as the rendering of colored lightmaps and more complex 3D objects (as compared to the original build).

The demo is pretty sweet and allows you to walk around a virtual gallery. The textures, renders, and lighting look professionally done, the question is how was it done? The developer gave word that the lightmapped polygons are rendered in two passes or more, each with a different texture. There can be more depending on the image being rendered such as graffiti or glowing lights.

So download the program and try it out. Charnold has stated that this engine might even be developed into a game in the future, which is something that you might want to look out for.

Source code of Dungeons 3D Alpha - Image 1The homebrew scene is about sharing knowledge and learning from each other. Homebrew developer charnold is one great example of this idea. He dropped by QJ.Net PSP Forums today and released the source code of Dungeons 3D Alpha.

He is responsible for PSP Dungeons - one of the greater homebrew 3D games, if not the greatest, for the PlayStation Portable. Now, this game has been modded by a couple of other developers many times before.

The first ones that come to mind are Be3f's Dark Dungeons and Dru Medina's DruMod. Despite this, charnold believes that the community needs more 3D games for the PSP, hence the release of his project's source code. The download below containing the source code of Dungeons 3D Alpha also has the following:
  • It comes with a MSVC 2003 workspace
  • Can be compiled for windows and for psp (see psp_includes.h)
  • You need sdl to compile and run the windows version
It really is good to see charnold doing this. A little reminder to our other developers, don't forget to acknowledge him whenever you use this.

Serious Dungeons v0.5 - Image 1

The first public alpha of Be3f's Serious Sam mod for Dungeons v0.7, Serious Dungeons version 0.3, has been received really well by the homebrew community">homebrew community. But he's been quiet for quite some time now. Could it be that his first public alpha is in truth the last?

Of course not! In fact, he's just given us the heads up through our very own forums, and he brings with him his second public alpha for Serious Sam, Serious Dungeons version 0.5. So, what's hip and happening with version 0.5?
  • 3 levels with new textures. Now Serious Dungeons features 8 original levels (in the end of the game you finish the story of The First Encounter, so next releases of the Serious Dungeons will probably combine The First & The Second Encounters of the Mental's aliens!)
  • music (from SS)
  • again, new HUD health icon
  • updated (by Charnold) Dungeons 3D Engine v0.7.04
We don't want to get in the way of your enjoyment, so we'll just leave you to download the file. But you, of course, know the drill already (or at least you should by now). Make sure to check out the ReadMe file for installation instructions and other important stuff that you seriously ought to know. And then you can go to our forums to join the discussion thread there. So there, now we can really get out of your way.

Keep it posted here for more Serious Dungeons updates!

SUper Dungeon 32 compilation/mod - Image 1

Lots of people have gone and modded charnold's PSP Dungeons into their personal variants - Frack, Serious, and so forth. This one comes from a different angle. dejkirkby in our forums - a.k.a. VettaCossX-AlphA in The Playground forums - has five of those mods in his PSP, and after switching from one to the other, decided, why not string them all together into one compilation?

(Hey, before anyone complains here, he gives due props and credit to everyone responsible for the original mods, going all the way back up to charnold for starting PSP Dungeons in the first place. Amped down? Proceed...)

The end result is Super Dungeon 32: a compilation of Be3f's Serious Dungeons and Dark Dungeons, Drew Medina's Dru Mod 2, Frack Mod 2 from Frack, and Vetta's own Halo Dungeons, into one 32-level shootout (which puts the 32 in Super 32). It's probably not just a simple compilation: . As Vetta puts it: all the weapons, all the models, all the aliens and enemies you love to pulp - in one game.

Visit the QJ forums to learn more about it, and to download the mod.

Serious Dungeons 0.3

The first public alpha of Be3f's Serious Sam: The First Encounter mod for Dungeons has just been released on the QJ forums. Powered by Charnold's Dungeons v0.7 engine, the mod is called Serious Dungeons and is currently at version 0.3.

Here's a list of what you can find in Serious Dungeons v0.3:
  • 5 levels with new textures.
  • sounds and music from SS.
  • 3 enemies (not Serious Sam enemies yet (aliens from Serius), just Q3 monsters. Maybe, you'll see Mental's aliens in future...)
  • 2 weapons (Q3 Rocket Launcher & Q3 Railgun model with the new green skin)
  • changed balance - enemies have different health (4, 8 and 12) & weapons do different damage (Rocket - 4, Rail - 8). The game is more difficult, then original Dungeons 0.7, but you may select any level from the menu
  • some new gfx
  • New bootpicture and sound added to the EBOOT
  • EBOOTs for the 1.50 firmware
Installation instructions have been put at the Full Article. Remember to check the readme files in the downloadable archive before you proceed to waste a few aliens in Serious Dungeons. If you find any bugs or have a few suggestions to make this game better, click on the "discuss" link below.

This is going to hurt, isn't it?

With a name like "Frack Mod", we'd have half-expected Frack's mod of charnold's PSP Dungeons 3D 0.7 to include Cylons somewhere... Frack Mod 3 includes new skins, levels, and sounds, and works with the original PSP Dungeons 3D 0.7 with the latter's ability to support multiple mods. Also, this mod is "Ready for use for 1.5 PSP," says Frack.

Rather than pass judgement between one PSP Dungeon Mod or another, let's just say they've come out highly polished, well made, and worth the time and effort in downloading. With three different pre-config control setups, it should be easy to get the hang of this game. You're one download link away from blasting aliens to the next planet.

Screencapture by Charnold

Charnold stopped by our forums to spread the word of a new PSP Dungeons release. Just when I thought the year couldn't end any better than it was, I was proved wrong. PSP Dungeons is one of the greatest 3D games for the PSP, knocking those Quake 2 fellows off of their stoops (never did finish that now did they?). PSP Dungeons started out as a dungeon/map exploration game, but has emerged into everyone's favorite FPS game on the PSP, possibly beating out some retail competition I would say.

In this new version, several things are added and changed, but the most important addition is the Mac version of this game is now available, now allowing you to play it on the PSP as it was intended to be played, or both the PC and Mac if you do not have a PSP at hand. This new version also adds some "snazzy" in-game music, although it may seem repetitive, it sure beats not having any music in it at all! This new version of PSP Dungeons 3D has the following added -
  • A Mac version
  • In-game music
  • Weapon damage / enemy life can be changed
  • Level selection in the main menu
  • Renders more texturecolors than the last versions (the engine can now convert to pixelformat 4444, 5650, 5551 and 8888)
  • Textures not loaded into vram are rendered much faster than in previous versions
  • Mipmaps can be switched on/off per maptexture
  • Now possible to install several mods parallel on the psp (Dungeons folder name can be changed)
  • A new level
