Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson predicted that 2010 will spell the end of the life cycle for both Nintendo's and Microsoft's respective next-gen consoles. He mentions since that time will be the peak for the video game industry, the need for new hardware will become prominent by then. You can read more about what Wilson had to say in the full article. |

Adding a hard drive to the PlayStation Portable is not entirely a new idea as Sony has been thinking about it these past few years. Though the memory stick is a good storage device, video games are also growing in size and we have to admit that these memory sticks have their limitations as well.GamesIndustry.biz recently had a discussion with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) CEO David Reeves and the above mentioned topic was brought up. According to Reeves, the idea is still being considered even though a new PSP model is being introduced. He explained: There's a point in time when you have to put a stake in the ground and say we're going to go with flash memory or we're going to go with hard drive. I don't think they've put that stake in the ground just yet. So they're thinking about it. I think they'll get through Christmas and think about what the next step would be. You might hear more later. In a recent interview, Reeves was also quoted that there are plans to "move some stuff from the PS3's PlayStation Network to the PSP". He mentioned back then that the idea is more possible today especially that the price of hard drives are dropping fast. |

The MCVUK report we cited in yesterday's post indicated the possibility of a European PS3 price cut, as well as video-on-demand services and Freeview TV in store for UK. However, Sony's Corporate Communications Nick Sharples declined to comment, saying that they do not comment on mere rumor and speculation. As most of us already know, Sony has a penchant for denying or declining to comment on rumors that eventually turn out to be true in the near future anyway. With that said, we'll probably have to wait and see what 'fireworks' are in store for us in the Leipzig event. |

Looks like Europe gets first dibs on the highly awaited PSP slim. David Reeves, CEO of SCEE, has announced during their E3 event that the PSP "will come out at 169 Euros in all the PAL territories at the beginning of September." The unit will be priced at €169. Meanwhile, Japan will be seeing (PSP) rainbows on September 20 with a pricetag of US$ 162.The new lighter, slimmer version is expected to be available in three colors for the Western hemisphere, while Japan will get three extra colors. Europe will get the classics - Piano Black, Ceramic White and Ice Silver - while Japan will also get Rose Pink, Lavender Purple and Felicia Blue. Gotta catch 'em all. |

The PSP may receive an upgrade to the tune of access to more titles from the PlayStation Network, as well as a possible hard drive. This year's E3 may not have held many new things for the PSP, aside from the announcement of a redesign, and even the people at Sony have felt the vacuum in between titles. Thus, they are taking steps to fix it. David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, did say that this is a problem that the company is working to address. "We're thinking of moving some of the stuff we have on the Network on to PSP," mentioning that Calling All Cars may be revamped to fit the handheld. Other titles may follow as Sony seeks to further rectify the situation by pumping up internal output and third party work. On the question of the PSP hard drive, "I think its definitely possible later, yes" was David Reeves' reply. One major reason why the PSP had not gotten one earlier despite the large user demand was that the drives were too expensive. But with the reduction of hard drive prices nowadays, Reeves believes that it may be something the company may look into. While all these may be promises made in the air, it's not criminal to dream about the possibilities. We'll see how the company decides to make do on these words, and hopefully we will see new games and hardware for our handhelds in the future. |

It was certainly a good day for PlayStation 3 consumers when Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced a price cut for the 60GB model as well as the arrival of the 80GB model on North American soil. However, this somewhat left European fans in the dark as no price cut-related statements regarding their territory was made.
Today at E3 2007 in California, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) CEO David Reeves finally commented that the above mentioned developments are only for North America and not for Europe. If you didn't get that right, let us re-phrase that however disappointing: no price cut and no 80GB model for Europe. This then confirms fans' previous belief that the changes will not be implemented in Europe because of the so-called Value Pack being offered by SCEE. This pack contains a 60GB PS3, two controllers, and two titles (Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm). This will be sold for 599 Euro or roughly around US$ 825. A little bit of good news here, David Reeves mentioned that SCEE will be revealing three new features and services for the PlayStation Portable that are exclusive to Europe. The announcement will be made during this year's upcoming Leipzig Games Convention. The CEO also noted that more colors for the redesigned PSP will be available as well as "something special" for the PS3. |
