QuickJump QuickPeek: PSP PS3 Xbox 360 Nintendo Wii news recap - Image 1

(Editor's Note: QuickPeek finally hits the big FIVE-OH!)

Two more editions and we'll be clocking in a full year of weekly recaps! What's in store this week? Lots of hellos and goodbyes. Some hellos are pre-mature, as seen in the case of MGS4 breaking street date (or not), and some goodbyes are actually kinda uplifting - especially if it might result in a 10-year disbarment. Get ready for some major surprises this week!

Sony PlayStation Portable handheld - Image 1We've seen a lot of external controller mods for the PlayStation Portable in the past, but nothing quite as neat looking as this one. Acidmods member Blizzrad explained how the new mod made use of a single 25 pin connector mounted above the PSP power switch and how it was able to connect to an external DualShock controller. You can view more details and a video of this latest PSP mod in our full article.

Logo of Sony PlayStation Store - Image 1Another week has gone by and that means another obligatory update for the PlayStation Store in Japan. Sony recently updated its selection of available titles that gamers can download off the PlayStation Network. At the forefront of notable DLC is Hudson Soft's Bomberman, which is available for both PlayStation platforms. You can check out the complete list of new titles in our full article after the jump.

TGS 2007: PlayStation Store soon to be accessible over PC - Image 1

And the revelations keep flowing from Sony Computer Entertainment's press conference, led by CEO Kaz Hirai. Up on the heels of updates for DualShock 3 and PlayStation Home is the new PC portal for PlayStation Home, which will soon allow users to connect to the service over their PCs.

In a short demonstration, Sony showed a Windows laptop sporting a PlayStation Store interface created for PC users. Of course, Hirai couldn't help but boast virtual shelf numbers during the process: 30 PlayStation 3 games, 300 add-on items, 100 game titles on archive, and a slew of game demos all underline what's served at the portal currently.

Mechanics are still slightly unclear, however, including details as to whether the PlayStation Store was accessed via browser or a stand-alone application. But some customers are beginning to appreciate the fact that they will be able to access the PlayStation Store through PCs for their PlayStation Portables, without needing to own a PlayStation 3.

More details on this and more as they develop.

It probably was a matter of time before someone decided to try plugging an SNES controller into a PSP (hey, if you can plug a PS2 analog stick, and toss in motion sensors to boot, what can't you plug?). Well, thanks to a tip from Natboy, he showed us this: AcidMods' F00 f00's external PSP controller test with an SNES controller. Talk about old-school control.

For the skeptical, F00 f00 says that he's not using a PC anywhere in this hookup, so there is no delay in control inputs. There's the matter, however, of the DualShock 2. Either it's a very pretty stand for the PSP to be held in a semi-upright position for easy viewing by the camera, or it mediates inputs from the SNES controller to the PSP. Absent any further details from F00 f00, or elaborate design schematics, we can only assume.

WARNING: Mod not meant for games which use the nub separately from the D-pad. (Thanks again for the tip, Natboy!)

Video games, graded!

With the launch of two of the industry's most-awaited gaming consoles just around the corner, the general excitement that has been building up can be felt almost everywhere. While the rest of us are painfully counting the days, hours, and minutes for those shiny, new machines to finally be available, Robert Workman from GameDaily takes a step back to assess the video game consoles of our time, to see which companies have actually done their homework.

Basing his comments on the console's price, game library, and lifespan, Workman then proceeds to grading the various gaming systems and issues a small prediction for that particular console.

Playstation 2: B+
A solid gaming machine with a fair price, the PS2 has a good library of games, as well as one of the best controllers of its time, no thanks to the Dual Shock 2. Despite being cast in the shadow of its bigger relative, the Playstation3, many good games are still being published for this well-loved console, with titles including the types of Final Fantasy XII (I personally recommend this game, by the way), God of War, and Okami. However, this star may just lose the limelight because of the PS3's superior technology.

Xbox: D
Microsoft's first attempt to enter the gaming industry may not have been as successful as they wanted it to be. Though the Xbox has a good library of games, this good factor may have been neutralized by its bulky frame. At this time, Microsoft has also stopped publishing games for this platform, with only the occasional third-party title making a quiet appearance from time to time. It may have been doom for this console the moment the Xbox 360 was released.
